Hi Leman, there are a million voice videos on KZbin, but yours is the best. I have a question that I'm sure a lot of other watchers of your video probably do to. To me it seems that, with much proper practice, we will be able to do your voice exercises within the range of our voices. Once we can do that fairly well, can you give us a melody line to try to sing. I presume singing vowel and consonant words will be much more of a challenge. Being new to vocal lessons, I thought that would give us a good measuring stick to determine how well we are coming along.

Thanks for the video man. I just figured it out. It's what you focus on. For example I can focus on the middle voice, then I can blend it with my head and then the pharyngal "mask" voice to it. Or I can focus on my chest then middle voice and vibrato will automatically happen. It's the same with both registers. It took me a year to figure this out. It was so complicated but I got it into muscle memory due to hours of exercises. A lot of people focus on notes, but it's not notes that will make you sound good. It's how you blend your resonance.

It depends on what range you are talking about when we get to A4 on it is very hard to get much chest up here, but if you warm up very well and experiment with being super nasal in the mask and trying to darken the tone and getting a hint of chest you can do this which will darken the tone making it sound fuller, also adding fry always gives more presence to the note it just depends what you are looking to do.

I found something different which I can use to sometimes hit notes up to Eb5 but I'm not sure if that is a mixed voice. It feels very similar to chest voice and the effort it takes is more than say an E3 in chest voice but way less than belting in my chest. BUT I have two major problems with this voice: 1) On the lower mixed notes (G4-Bb4) it has a rasp or crackling to it which I can't control (especially with closed vowels). It doesn't hurt at all which is why I think the sound is produced by my false cords but I don't know how to eliminate that nasty sound. 2) Although my mixed voice is entirely connected to my chest voice, when I try transitioning into my head voice I have a similar voice break/crack as when I'm going straight from chest to head voice. Can someone help me to get over these issues?
@lemandoeslogic22612 жыл бұрын
This sounds like a very specific issue that won't be able to be fixed texting back and forth. If you can only hit certain notes with vocal fry it just means your vocal cords haven't gained the strength or muscle memory to get into this voicing clean which happened to me for quite awhile too. @lemandoeslogic226110 ай бұрын
this happened to me when I was trying to sing higher and higher. One thing you need to check is how strong your falsetto is, when you are entering a fry it simply means you cannot coordinate your vocal chords to fully stretch to the position they need to hit hit the note close. Try hitting this note in falsetto with a nice relaxed stretch go the chords. Then go a half step or whole step below this note and practice hitting this note clean in mix over and over until it is easy. Then, try very quickly and without pushing to jump quickly touch that note you are trying to go far by going up to it with a 3 note scale up to it just to touch the note with the same voicing and placement. Also, what needs to be considered is the range and note you are going for. Depending on where your voice is at in its development you may need to lean even more into the mask if you are getting too high to keep a chesty full mix.
@apothecarry754410 ай бұрын
@@lemandoeslogic2261 Thanks for the tips! I'll try that out some more. Immediately I notice that when flipping from falsetto note to mixed and then back, I get this break that starts to sound a bit like yodeling. Not a smooth transition so I guess I have to just practice and iron that out. Edit: I also tend to transition around G4. I also notice that I have to use a lot more breath pressure to not get the note to crack in mixed when compared to falsetto, which ironically I think is contributing to the nonsmooth transition? Sounds like my culprit may be underdeveloped falsetto maybe?
@lemandoeslogic226110 ай бұрын
@@apothecarry7544 this could be a mixture of things but yes the falsetto should be very strong and resonant and not airy. If a voice gets so loud that I think I might lose it, is it normal when stretching vocal chords or should I try to just optimize what I'm doing a bit? I never felt my voice becomes dry until I found out a better resonance in my voice by doing these excersises.

There should never be discomfort and if there is stop. However, it takes time to figure out how much air pressure to use throughout the different ranges of your voice and sometimes when we apply too much pressure we can start to get itchy throats or feel discomfort, just take a break and come back if you feel this. I definitely had some discomfort as I was finding my voice, expanding my range, and figuring out how to use my diaphragm and the amount of pressure but I would just stop if it became uncomfortable or hoarse in any way.

@@quwane Generally, we use less air pressure in our lower range but more air flow to hit notes way down in our lower chest but more air pressure as we go up in range but this can easily be confused as much strain/unnecessary tension. We do need to increase air pressure in the diaphragm as we go up in range while remaining relaxed in our throat and face. We also begin to thin the voice and use a thinner part of our vocal cords as we go up in range.

@@lemandoeslogic2261 OOOOH I got it. So, the higher the notes, the more air pressure but the airflow should stay the same as on low notes. That point to remain with the same posture and not tense up when going up I really experienced too. Anyhow even if my conclusion is wrong I will try it all out by myself as well. Normally I don't even speak much which sucks but that's the reason why I couldn't figure out the right balance between air pressure and airflow to find good resonance. Usually my voice fries out a lot when just talking because I don't use much airflow. And you can't say I have a deep voice when talking at all but I can go very deep without increasing airflow but vice versa increasing air pressure and adding vocal fry with compression

I don’t find being nasal or bright ever helped me, it eventually kicked my voice into some weird nasality even in speaking tone and was kinda baked into my tone . To me what helped was the SLS approaches and just relaxing into it not pushing too hard in volume or tone. I fee the voice naturally goes where it needs to song as it’s taken in a relaxed and slower pace. I was also taking lessons from an opera teacher so I guess I blended the two approaches but her approach was nasality and volume and frankly it sucked and ruined my tone. I’m assuming the muscles in my body just got used to synchronizing in a specific way and something just stuck with me. But yeah I could go above c 5 without nasal so idk, I frankly think it’s not necessary

Different methods work for different people. I think the goal should always to be to do whatever you want with your voice and shape your tone however you like as well whether it be to darken or brighten it. It never hurts to have more tools.
@heythere69838 ай бұрын
@lemandoeslogic2261 Yeah that’s true. What is it about nasality that helps with higher notes being achieved ? I think focusing on the tone was where I was set but feeling it out slowly and building confidence in my own sensation through lip trills helped . Back with my teacher , I was mentality in a state of nasality for reach but I did that for months as I increased my range and the nasal tone was thus hard to move away from. But what is it about nasality that helps the highest notes supposedly? I have to continue the video maybe you mention it
@lemandoeslogic22618 ай бұрын
@@heythere6983 for most people that try to utilize the mask first when strengthening the mask it is helpful because it is much easier to get through your natural vocal break with a very bright, forward, and thin sound as you go higher as opposed to trying to bring a full chesty sound higher and higher and having your voice crack every time. This totally depends on how it is approached and practiced as well. But for me and how I teach, I strengthen the falsetto first to allow muscle memory in the vocal cords comfortably moving into higher positions and hitting higher notes without tension in time. Then when you start using a masky nasally tone you are slowly incorporating a thicker part of your vocal cord into the sound, thickening the tone and resonance. Finally, in time when this is strong a darker, fuller tone with chest resonance can be added and blended in.

@moonshine37818 ай бұрын
@@heythere6983 the ugly nasal tone described in this video is called "twang". it's not necessarily nasal as if you're resonating all the sound in the nasal cavity but what happens when you make that bratty childlike or honky sound is you narrow down your aryepiglottic sphincter which is the tube-like space above the vocal folds to produce a bright piercing sound without needing to push. just like when u pinch and narrow the opening tube of the garden hose, the reduction in space causes the water to accelerate as it passes through the narrowed opening, increasing the pressure and force with which it exits the hose. Same thing with twang, as it allows the voice to cut through a mix more easily and reach the back of a large room or a noisy environment without the singer having to increase volume excessively and it helps with getting into your mixed voice as the brightness helps you transition smoothly across your registers. You also mentioned that you take lessons with an opera coach. well, in classical singing they don't really use twang but instead of relying on twang for projection and clarity, classical singers focus on optimising the resonance within their vocal tract. They achieve this by techniques that expand the pharyngeal space which is what most people refer to as the "open throat" technique. Contemporary singers focus on forward placed sound while in classical or choral singing, they focus more on the back resonance thats why often their sound has less nasal resonance is because they tend to lift the soft palate more to create more space at the back of the throat.

@lemandoeslogic226111 ай бұрын
A singer like the Weekend is actually singing in his mixed voice about 90 percent of the time, he utilizes almost no chest resonance when he sings except when he sings lower and even then it is not very chesty, he keeps a forward, light tone throughout his entire range. His technique is similar to what I am demonstrating in this video I am just exaggerating the nasality of it to show placement. To get smooth going up higher in this part of our voice we need a strong upper register and we start by gaining this strength by first getting our falsetto stronger, thicker, and higher. The falsetto is the stepping stone to a strong mixed voice.

@lemandoeslogic22612 жыл бұрын
I have never heard this, I would say no you could still mix with tension there but it certainly won't help. It takes awhile to have very little in the neck and face when getting up in these tricky areas, the only thing that should have tension or pressure is the diaphragm and abdominal area.

I don't really believe in labeling voices. I was told I was a baritone and now I would be considered a tenor 1 or high tenor from developing my voice. I would have to hear you but off the bat I would strengthen your falsetto and then your chest to get a bit higher. I have videos on these as well

Bro your videos are wonderful buh can I knw how a support should feel how to have a good breath support
@lemandoeslogic22612 жыл бұрын
Thanks! To be honest it depends what range you are singing in, if you are belting with power you definitely need to use your abs as support almost as if you are pooping in a way lol. A lot of issues with support also can stem from fear of hitting notes or not actually breathing when you sing, which I did when I began. If you are afraid of what you are singing you usually hold your breath to some extent...there should be a good amount of movement and energy below your stomach when taking breaths and singing each phrase. If that is not the case try panting loudly like a big dog, as funny as it sounds this is a good example of how much effort we should be using to support.

Hey bro, I've been working on "When I was your man" by Bruno Mars lately. Really just to challenge myself with the notes and I'm starting to explore parts of my voice that I have wanted for a long time, but never really had any clear direction on how to develop. Parts such as when is he using his mix vs. how does he seem to pull his chest so high up. It would be sick if you could do a video based on something like that and disect what is happening with the voice and how to achieve those results.
@lemandoeslogic2261 Жыл бұрын
I have a video on full mix which focuses more on a chesty mix. Bruno is singing in mix almost 100 percent of the time in all on his choruses. He can bring up a chesty mix fairly high but in his higher notes above A4 it’s mostly a masky mix

That all comes in time. Like any part of your voice you need to discover it and then develop it with focus. Try to control it slowly and expand it with different songs, notes, slides. Then once you can start to control this nasally sound we need to try to add depth with chest resonance so we can start shaping the tone. My full mix video might help you with this.
