Great recordings. It do show very well how curvy the route of the round is... When some people argue why the rifled musket was such a big improvement over the smoothbore, they often fail to understand this issue... Sure it was a huge improvement, but to take advantage of it, your need to be a good marksman and be good at actually judging the distance... (something the wast majority of american civil war soldiers never learned... most never even fired their weapons out side of combat) Have you ever tried to get someone else to set up the targets at more random ranges (like 237yards, instead of 200 or 250) and then try hit them? (so you need to judge the distance also)

Another fantastic video with a lot of time and effort put into it. It shows in the quality of the video and shooting. I've been wanting to get into BPCR long range shooting, it just seems so satisfying when it's going good. I like how you explained the different sight pictures used. Personally I prefer the full sight at the center mass position but I know sights aren't as adjustable on Victorian military rifles so that's not always an option. Speaking of sights, your short rifle seems to be dead on with the windage. Are the sights correctly aligned or are you using Kentucky windage? I love the videos, keep up the good work.

Man, watching your videos really makes me miss my Sniders. And my M-H Mk. II. And my Parker Hale 1853 😿. If you set up a camera part way to your target, you might actually be able to see the bullets go by. And hear them, they go; “hummmmmmmn” as they fly over. Our range is built in a soaking wet muskeg, so in our fall black powder shoots, I would fill the base of a Minie bullet with lube, and press a few grains of FG into the lube. The lube would produce smoke and make it easier to follow its trajectory, and thus easier to teach others about the importance of accurately judging distances.

An excellent video on a little known Victorian Era Timber Falling Technique. Do you have a Theory on why the Black Powder God's are so perverse, and what practices might appease them? Could Barometric Pressure, Humidity, and Temperature have that great an affect? A rifle that has to be rezeroed every day loses a great deal of its utility.

Happy New Year and another great video Rob. I have a couple of questions. What material are you using in the cartridge that you use to blacken the sights? Also, with the Enfield ladder sight, could you also flip the ladder up vertically and set the slider to say 200 yards as apposed to moving the slider along horizontally? Is there a difference? Thanks
@britishmuzzleloaders7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan. It's just a bit of cleaning flannel rolled up and soaked with gun oil. As for the ladder, no.... in the bed, it is graduated from 100 to 400yds and the lowest setting with the ladder up takes up with the lowest being 500. Happy New Year to you and yours as well.

Rob, Hopefully you get this as it is a bit of an old video now. Have you ever considered a "fouled shot", say a round designed to clean the bore after fouling. Perhaps a tight fitting round covered in fabric to act as a pullthrough whilst loading a small charge? Just a consideration I thought of and now you'll prove me wrong on! Thanks!
@britishmuzzleloaders6 жыл бұрын
Can't say that I have. Not really anything historical in that regard.... There wasn't any service ammo that bore any resemblance to that sort of thing... interesting concept though...
@banhammer72437 жыл бұрын
Are the black powder loads you are using "Full Military" power (is that the right term?) or just your personal preference for target shooting? If they are not "Full Military" what are the diferences in range, recoil and accuracy between the two? Great videos, have shared them to a few people who are interested as well :D
@britishmuzzleloaders7 жыл бұрын
Some are... My Snider load for this rifle is just a bit under, in all cases. That is why I have to re-zero the rifle at these longer ranges. Typically, the loads I end up using are more accurate than what a modern version of the service load would be. It's very hard to replicate them today due to the better quality BP they had back then. I always go with the load that is the most accurate/consistant. Sometimes, as with the Martini, they are the same (85gr FFg in that case)

do you stay with a load when you find one or do you occasionally tinker around to see if you can improve the round that you've worked up? it also seems to me that altitude has some impact as to air density on the sight picture as well!
@britishmuzzleloaders7 жыл бұрын
Yes I do... The work up is extensive and mathematical. It doesn't lie. For me, that's the work up,..... finding the best load. I think that the deviation in zero probably came from the difference in elevation between the firing point and the target in each practice. In the first, I was shooting uphill and in the second, downhill.

britishmuzzleloaders of course , i envy you for having such beautiful guns , and a beautiful place to shoot them. I am 13 and live in the English countryside , My father and I have applied for a firearms and shotgun certificate to be able to own guns such as these. It's outrageous that we can't shoot our country's own guns.
