In WWI the drill instructors were amazed at how far and how accurately my grandfather could throw a grenade. They were not impressed by his tendency to argue with them. Thankfully by the time he finished training the war was nearly over.

And a Collab with lindybeige would be fun also he could wear his WW1 British army uniform and you guys could discuss WW1 or 2 history and tactics.

What a wonderful video, Rob! You've really outdone yourself in setting the experience. Well done. I especially liked seeing the underhand bomb throw--very common where there are branches to catch the bombs and drop them down on the thrower. I confess I was surprised by how much of a bang you got with the rock, however--Canadian rocks are certainly dangerous! The telegraphing of the bayonet was particularly interesting; it presages the room clearing techniques of the modern infantry.

The whistle blast was an homage to all the lads who went over the top. Weight is an issue because a soldier carries his rifle far more than he fires it. I'd rather have two extra grenades than a heavier rifle. The whole subject whilst fascinating is moot as the SMLE was the operational choice for many reasons. Another great short film Rob, many thanks.

@@88porpoise yeah, almost everyone had mature and well-working rifles but the Canadians
@88porpoise
@88porpoise 3 жыл бұрын
@@quentintin1 Yes, as most of those were developed decades before the war and produced in established armaments industries. The amount of iteration to get to the SMLE or Mauser 98 were massive. The Ross Mk III (which was a completely different rifle from the Mk II) was developed in 1910 and the first time large numbers were in the hands of soldiers was heading to France. And it took time to develop competent arms production capabilities. The Canadian government was extremely dumb to pursue the Ross once Lee-Enfields became available. But with minor updates and the production and QA issues resolved by the time the Ross was replaced it was a capable rifle, well within the the standards of WWI rifles. Of course it would still make more sense to go with the SMLE for practical reasons even if the Ross were as good as it or even marginally better.
@quentintin1
@quentintin1 3 жыл бұрын
@@88porpoise there were deliberate questions as to why the Ross was pursued, the chief one was that they weren't able to get Lees at the time, sure the situation was different in 1910, but at that point they were entrenched with their choice (and also corruption)

I love my Ross, and my enfields, they’re different animals…my Ross is an mk2, has the lever on the side to drop the mag follower, loads lightning fast that way, just drop 5 loose rounds in and they just line themselves up, not sure why they dropped that feature for the mk3…I always heard the argument for the Ross having a faster cycle time, which I’m sure is true on paper or for a new shooter, but in practice I’ve never felt slower with a conventional bolt

@88porpoise
@88porpoise 3 жыл бұрын
@@IceWolfLoki I think the magazine thing is kind of overblown from the perspective of the day. The early Ross rifles absolutely had major issues. It can be debated how much incorrect assembly of the bolt was a real issue in practice, but there were serious production issues that made the soldiers rightly distrustful of them. And if my life were on the line, I wouldn't exactly believe the guys who gave me faulty rifles, shovels with holes in them, and shoddy boots when they said "it's fixed, trust us" when there was a perfectly good and proven rifle available just down the line.
@IceWolfLoki

@88porpoise
@88porpoise 3 жыл бұрын
@@IceWolfLoki I am sure most of the Canadians would have preferred ten round magazines, but I doubt it was a significant factor. Considering how nobody increase magazine capacity when developing or updating bolt action rifles through WWII, it seems not to have been a top of mind thing. In particular the French seem to have taken a lot of lessons from the war, but elected for a five round magazine for the MAS 36. I am not saying it didn't matter but that it likely wasn't a significant consideration. The ten round magazine absolutely was an advantage, but it was nothing compared to the massive fundamental advantage that a semi-automatic rifle holds over a bolt-action. The magazine provided a potentially life saving capability in certain circumstances, but remember you are fighting as a unit and have buddies to keep firing while you reload.

I know it's a pain to set that up and take it down. But I would love to see a similar course run with some of the other rifles of WW1. I really enjoyed your conclusions not being the traditional ones, I've heard parroted again and again.
