People tell me I'm too negative so for a change of pace I'm going to say a bunch of negative things about a rifle I really like. The HOPMOD SPR, a rifle inspired by my desire to combine a stainless steel barrel and a LaRue handguard.

Improvements can be made to most firearms: be it the design, minor details, or even basic things like accessory configuration. I myself NEED to get an SBR eventually because physically I am weird in prepositions in terms of arm length with joint issues.

Yeah, I also went with the viper pst in a qd mount on an 18" spr build with an spr / heavy barrel. I put the suppressor on that thing and my God... Thing is an absolute anchor. It's fun as hell to shoot especially with handloads stacking holes at 100 yards, but I gave up putting a light and backup irons on it because it's too heavy for anything other than range fun lol.

This is quite similar to my SPR build, I went with the 16" SS-BA-midlength for soft-shooting, and to cut OAL with a mounted suppressor. I currently shoot a load that runs the Hornady 68gr BTHP, that delivers 2960fps at the muzzle. For me, this load is still doing about 1200FPS at 1000yds. While maybe not as accurate as a 6.5 creed at that distance, I'm still getting lethal accuracy and knock down power from a much smaller lighter gun. Maybe not clone correct, but certainly fits a certain SAWC model better than a lot of other guns that claim to be SPRs.

Sometimes a rifle that you like is the best kind. This one has great precision, is able to reach out and is soft shooting. What's not to like? Looking forward to the Urban SPR by Brass Facts. Even better if it has a scope that has been reviewed by C_Does. I just wish there was a light weight MPVO that doesn't cost as much as the Leupold Mark 5 which sell in excess of 2K dollars. A good MPVO that is light weight with good glass under 1K would be a home run for a MOD SPR build.

Don't pay attention to the haters. Your voice is one of the sane ones. There IS a lot out there to be critical of and, frankly, if you're the only voice for that ... I want to hear it. Simply because someone is critical of something does NOT mean they are biased. Biased, or uninformed, negativity is what pisses people off, it's just that most people suck at detecting bias. Low information buyers react negatively, per se, to critical statements because they can't tell the difference. Low information buyers also react positively to positive reviews. You know, like a positive review for a rifle the reviewer was gifted for the purposes of the review. It can get so bad that biased reviewers can basically disclose these kinds of things up front and STILL get lots of likes and subs because the production value of their channel is high, and their viewers consume the content for the feels. I can honestly say that this is a consistent source of irritation for me, as a gun consumer and KZbin watcher. I saw you guys (you and BF and company) speak on the whole SPR thing a while back. For w/e reason, that subject is still getting some view traction out there on other gunTube channels. Likewise, I think we all decided that you can get that performance for less money with newer equipment, and also that going with a slightly shorter barrel than 18" isn't sacrilege. My own GPR/ SPR (whatever...) is a mostly, clone correct URG-I with a Vortex Razor 1-6. With MK262 (commercial Black Hills OTMs) I can make easy hits out to 700 yards. What the heck do I need a MK12 for? I DID overspend, but after I really took it out to longer range, I realized I was missing almost nothing and, probably, could have gotten similar results with a less "cool" setup. Lately I have been fantasizing about a not-SOPMOD block II upper made from Centurion arm's new CHF SOCOM profile barrel and their new sand cutter carrier along with a DD RIS III and Aero precision receiver. A better, cheaper block II.

Faxon Gunner is the most slept on barrel for general purpose use. And unless your full auto dumping, the "accuracy loss" is barely anything, and a non issue unless your doing PRS shit. Semi auto rifles just do not get as hot as people think they do. So much untrue garbage spewed about modern pencil profiles.

@JosephWhales
@JosephWhales Ай бұрын
I like this concept. A build just for fun. I felt inspired and ordered a 14.5 version of the barrel you used. They're on sale for ~$150, so what the heck? For glass, I'm going to use an Arken EPL4, 4-16x with decent glass, capped windage and a zero stop and weighs about the same as a 1-6 PST. For gas, I think I'm just gonna go with a yankee hill suppressor gas block and drill it out until it's where I want it to be. If I'm lucky, the barrel will be properly ported out of the box. Have you guys ever tried the .223 55gr V-Max load from Black Dot Ammo? Yes, it's remanufactured, but those guys do a good job at a reasonable price. Although it does suffer the limitations of 55gr loads, the stuff shoots really straight out to appropriate distances.

I built my bastardized version of a MK12 Mod 0 a while back using a 18” BCM upper and it’s one of my favorite rifles to shoot at the range. If I were to do it all over again I would probably go 14.5”. I love the performance out of the 18” but when you throw a can on it, it gets a little unwieldy.

Stainless barrels last for as long as you let them. Firing schedules. Don’t get it too hot and it can last for over 10k rounds. Just don’t mag dump D60s as fast as you can. CHF Chrome lined barrels care less about firing schedules and that’s what makes them superior in longevity but there’s no set number of rounds a stainless barrel can take vs a CHFCL barrel.

Is there a rugged adjustable gas block you'd keep instead of the SA one? I get that having none is something less that can break but if one needs one to use all kinds of ammo I'd love to know a few options or maybe a video about different kinds. I wonder how much barrel life difference there is of that barrel to let's say a steel 6.5 CM one. Would be an interesting build to have different uppers.

I mounted it on a BCM upper, SOLGW M89 handguard (best handguard on the market for ir lasers and rigidity) and have a PA 1-8 compact on a badger ordnance mount. I havent had a chance to shoot it, should I expect the same accuracy you are getting from the longer 16" ?

honestly I think the velocity gains from 16 to 18 inch barrels are overrated when compared to the gains you get in recoil reduction because you have rifle length gas.
@TheDiameter
@TheDiameter Жыл бұрын
It’s cumulative, the lighter recoil & extra velocity are extremely helpful in shooting outdoors. The extra length and weight are extremely hindering indoors… I’m of the opinion that 18” is the same compromise 12.5” is. It doesn’t fit a main role as well as 16” or 20”, but it fills the niche in between just like 12.5” does between 10.5” and 14.5”

two extra inches over 16 does next to nothing. SPRs were 18 inches to differentiate them from the M16 and M4 in logistics. if you're trying to shoot far, you picked the wrong cartridge. but if you're still stubbornly married to 556, get a 20 inch barrel minimum. preferably 24.

I have the ts-12x on my 16 inch spr build. Its lights out at 500 (longest range with in 3 hours of me). The only thing I don't like about the scope is how tight the magnification ring is. If there is any moisture on it or you hands are wet your not turning it. I would get a lever for it but I don't want to pay the 90 something dollars for it from us optics. Other than it not having illumination its a great scope. 3k rounds through it, zeroed once and confirmed every time I go to the range.

@@nicholaslake6891 That sounds pretty good. I always think I need illumination, but then never actually use it. I've had a few scopes lately with stiff magnification or parallax adjustment. I've used some of the 3d printed options for throw levers and they work well. On my strike eagle 5-25 the parallax adjustment was super stiff. I got a big zip tie and marked on it where it would end up when tightened. I put shrink tube on the zip tie between the lock part and the mark I made. The shrink tube makes it grip so it doesn't slip and the lock part on the bigger zip ties is big enough to act like a throw lever.

Did you use 10rd pmag because of tyranny, or ease of reloading while prone?

Looks like 20rnd and they are much better for prone shooting, so probably chose for that reason alone

A shame LaRue discontinued its MLok and slickatinny handguard offerings. One less non friction fit design handguard option out there…

Is that your good ole Resonator K? You sure are getting your money's worth out of it. How well does it work on a 5.56?

Even on a 16" barrel it doesn't do much.

@@Hoplopfheil That's a shame. I have the old Turbo, Turbo 1 i guess you would call it. It works fairly well on a 10.5". The new Turbo 3 supposedly works as well as the Turbo 2 in noise reduction but is much less gassy.
