Bailskywalker ...91 people will accuse their crush's date of being a monster and will guide a mob to go murdering him/her? That's a very mature way of dealing with your emotions. Simply understanding that you're not the right person for him/her and knowing that she/he is not the right person for you neither cause if you'd really love him/her you would let him/her to be happy, even if that happiness doesn't come from you is too mainstream I guess XD

A lot of people compare Gaston to a bully, but i think Gaston is more like a terrorist. Only he doesn't use terror to make people fear him, he uses terror to make people fear his enemies, thus rallying them to his cause. This song has some dark social undertones. Shows how easy it can be to manipulate the weak minded public.
@thegoodfather11777 жыл бұрын
all they know is that Gaston is the towns' most respected citizen (probably akin to a local superhero) and that belle was kidnapped and has been driven slightly crazy by her experience. Hell, i'd grab a pitchfork. Gaston isnt a terrorist, he's just taking things on face value

It made me really sad to hear the Beast speak at the end. His voice didn't sound like something evil at all, but rather a sensitive soul. Yet he is a beast, and without seeing him your imagination could run wild about what terrible thing he looks like. It made it clear how cursed he is and how fearful the villagers would be about something they've never seen.

If you didn't know the whole story, like Gaston doesn't, then the beast could actually be seen as a bad guy. He kidnaps an old man, then imprisons the man's daughter. For all Gaston knows, Belle has stolkholm syndrom. The beast would actually be pretty awful sounding if all you knew was that he imprisioned some girl.
@Ithirid9 жыл бұрын
To be fair they were trespassing. Plus even if Gaston knew the whole story he'd still do this cause he's a bastard who planned to threaten Belle into marrying him, if she refused her father would be taken to a mad house.
@CaffreyLover9 жыл бұрын
That's valid, but knowing the whole of Gaston's story, this was more of a testosterone/rage induced vengeance against the beast. He laughs at Belle and Maurice but the moment he picks up on Belle's true feelings - feelings that she never showed him - he couldn't bear it. He uses the Beast's appearance to his advantage, inciting the townsfolk, but we see it's a personal vendetta - "Take whatever booty you can find, but remember, the Beast is mine!" - he cannot let another man "win" Belle. Just my opinion ;)

Well, it pretty defines the idea of a mob. Gaston played on the villagers' fears, talking about the Beast eating their children and wives. By the time the fear and increasingly morbid suppositions was through, they were convinced they needed to take quick, preemptive action. Its a well-known fact that the bigger the crowd, the lower the overall ability to reason.

I gotta admit that while in the story the Beast is the 'hero' so to speak from the villagers' point of view he's a monster who may have put some kind of spell on Belle and her father to make them see things his way. In most other stories if you only looked at the villagers' side of the story Gaston is the hero..I know it's been said before but the song reinforces that to me.
@DavidbarZeus110 жыл бұрын
True, but they base their views on him simply by the way he looks and their foolish superstitions. If they had waited a few minutes, they'd have remembered that he's lived near them for quite some time, and nothing terrible has happened. The only reason they stand with Gaston is because "We don't like what we don't understand In fact it scares us and this monster is mysterious at least."

The point of the song is that ignorance and fear are evil. Like the other guy said, this Beast has existed nearby for years. Nothing has happened. Gaston frightens them and whips them into an irrational frenzy.

The different viewpoints that you mentioned is accurate. However, they most definately never cared about Belle as a person, or what could have happened to her. Frankly, neither does Gaston. He's doing everything out of selfishness. They are driven by ignorance. That's the point of the song.

That was what all the beasts of legend did, and they just discovered those legends were very real.

Only a lyricist like Howard Ashman would use a line from Shakespeare in the same song as a reference to a WWII fight song, and a line like '50 Frenchmen can't be wrong.'

This song would be 20% cooler if in skyrim you didn't kill parthanaxx so a mob headed out to kill him! And instead of "bring the old man!" Its "bring everyone who'd dare help him\her!" Which would include if u joined them: the dark brotherhood, the theaves guild or the companions!

You'd think that if they were self aware enough to realize that, they'd have the decency not to turn into an angry mob. Maybe they just don't care.
