I’m 69, ex-military, backpacker, camper and 30 yr trauma nurse so my gear is based on that. I go as light as possible and use what I have. I use a chest rig no plate and small pack, poncho, heavy duty zip-lock bags, 6 mags, sidearm stuff, fixed blade, headlamp always around my neck, glasses, small med kit, H2O/snacks, binoculars, radio, gps/compass and stuff on my person. That’s it...speed and weight.

Same rig, but had an attached small back that carried essentials plus a water bladder. That was a nice counter weight to the front load. I wore a battle belt so if I had to dump the carrier, I had my side arm, magazines, knife, etc.

I'm 67 and have a similar background to Mike. I've found the same to be true. Lighter and modular is my approach. Carry the essentials on your first line and the less critical/snivel gear in removal modules to be dumped as needed.

You’ve basically trained your entire life to be able to get away with that. I also go with a chest rig. I really don’t plan on clearing houses and getting into a ton of gun fights. If anything I’m avoiding gun fights as much as possible.

The SMERSH LBE or old 782 setup is where it's at. Chest rigs and plate carrier rigs was the thing for awhile because of GWOT but folks don't realize that was simply an adaption done to accommodate armored vehicle patrols where most of your day was inside a vehicle. You can still get in and operate a vehicle with the SMERSH although certainly not as comfortably depending on how much gear you have stuffed into it. For the minuteman/guerrilla, the chest/molle/plate carrier rig becomes problematic on several levels, especially when walking many miles over rough terrain. Taliban usually preferred various models of vest type rigs or the old school Chinese chest rigs that they would simply sling around their backs, off their chests, for foot travel....essentially mimicking a proper LBE. The human body is the human body. The LBE is the best configuration for being on foot. Just to add with the SMERSH, if for whatever reasons the LBE is becoming cumbersome or in the way for whatever reasons, you can simply strip it down to the belt, quickly feed it through the mag pouches, and wear the belt cross chest carry around your shoulder with the ability to easily swing the mags to your back or to the front as a sort of makeshift chest rig/bandoleer. Because the belt is really solid it actually is fairly comfortable. If you're a "big" guy there's probably not enough belt length to pull that off but if you're a serious minuteman....start getting skinny yesterday. Seriously. All of this is completely pointless if you're out of shape.

You aint driving your honda civic off trails in the woodlands, you going to be hiking, and doing so in a chest carriers and rig and backpack, belt is PAIN, your just not going ot be able to go as far. you need the weight shifted of your shoulders for any long range hiking, or risk injury and poor performance, not to mention if you have to break contact and dump gear, your fucked and going to prolly die overnight, if the weather is non permissive.

Well thought out kit. A couple of suggestions: 1. Depending upon the volume of your smoke gernades, you may need to double the number in order to mask movement. 2. I use a brown primer paint on the lower portion of the magazines (below the mag well). Your reddish mags are a fair size mass that, if spotted when in the AK in front of your body, can become an aiming point. Another advantage to paint is I number my mags so, if I have a jam, etc., I can tell at a glance which mag I need to check for reliability. 3. With thermal becoming more common, you might want to include a camo/mylar poncho tarp. It works in normal times as a rain diverted and can assist in making a block to a thermal detection issue. 4. In situations where you will wearing this gear, I would suggest at least two pairs of socks to match the season and a wool sweater or fleece to wear under the windbreaker (when trying to rest or sleep...layers). You obviously have thought out carrying a pistol. Good job and thanks for sharing.
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
Some good points to consider! The smoke and mags are easy fixes (I've been meaning to take the time to number mags and just haven't done so). The space blanket I actually have a SOLO emergency blanket (OD on one side) that is in the butt pack and I just completely forgot it was in there, lol... I've always kept 2 extra pairs of socks in my pack (keeping just a single spare pair in my butt pack) to make for a total of 3 spare pairs but I get what you're saying. Food for thought. Warm layer is kept in my pack as well. Going through my sustainment setups for packs is on my list of loadout to film and describe. All good stuff to bring up, appreciate it!

Something to consider for anyone who owns one of these specific Smersh rigs is that the back can accommodate a water bladder pouch. I used a condor one. There are little holes on the metal strap pieces you can fit a zip tie to and put that through the molle on the pouch and it fits perfectly. Or you could use really small karabiners. Either way it works.

I like the LBE stuff because of where I live. I have thought about armor and what to wear in the winter and how it would integrate. I was a Marine in 08-13 and using a plate carrier on top of winter clothing was horrible. Gortex would make you drip sweat and I felt like I was wearing my gear wrong. I like slick body armor, with a belt setup or a chest rig set up. That way I can wear armor under a coat, parka, etc. And have my gear on the outside, still accessible for this reason. It also adds the ability to adapt to situations that we might encounter as regular people.

@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
@@chrishugs6173 I've been finding that sometimes you have to suck it up and let out the straps and such to just make it bigger to fit. Thankfully with modern gear that's easier to do. you still get some binding every now and then. But this then leads to choosing the appropriate layers of clothing to work as a system in and of its self... I did a video a few years back on clothing systems that kind of outlined the layers to choose and how to wear them and how they work within the system. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6qTXnSBg8qFeLs I'm a firm believer in the "action suit" concept for setting up your clothing system. It will create less bulk while still maintaining proper moisture management and insulation! It makes wearing gear much better, not perfect, but better.
@Rb8892 жыл бұрын
This is probably the best set up I've found, too. PC with some low profile essentials up front, then a heavy LBE run like an ALICE rig with sustainment and everything else, way easier to throw on/off and distribute weight evenly. The only way to be comfortable and practical with heavy winter gear involves what you mentioned with a slick PC under your outermost layer, then chest rig/LBE overtop. The SMERSH is nice because it's cheap, durable, and has basically everything you need, save for specialty stuff. The American equivalent is something you'd have to piece together, or modify off of an old ALICE kit, or a very expensive VelSys jungle rig. I'd say no one does heavy LBE as well, or as practically as the Russians.
@BB-nw6cs2 жыл бұрын
Really like your setup. Also glad to see you included a cleaning kit, many more modern KZbinrs leave those out - perhaps because they fought during the day and was back in camp at night. I also like the fact that your compass is on your body and on a string, like your pocket knife. We used to tie everything down and attach it with paracord inner strands and fishing swivels to our LBE. I also noticed the absence of a handgun. We would pack ours in the big utility pouch as it is a secondary weapon only to be used when your main weapon is totally out of comission. First prize is always to fix your main weapon. Using an AK, you probably would not have much of an issue with this. I would add a small emergency ration, (sardines or a freeze dried meal) should your patrol unexpectedly be extended. Also a small container of salt to cook anything you may trap should you have to E&E. A small signal mirror can also be very useful to attract attention or to warn your group. Lastly, a method to deal with natures calls, something to dig and bury human waste (you fixed blade knife could be used for this in a pinch) and something to clean your person (squirt bottle if you have lots of water in your area, otherwise TP or wipes)
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate your comment! Good observations! For digging a cat hole the fixed blade knife (like you pointed out) will take care of that and the body wet wipes I have will double for TP and cleanups. My compass has a mirror on it so that can double as a signaling mirror if need be. Although I want to get a few small signalling specific mirrors to keep with signal kits in my kits (signal panel, whistle, colored smoke, and a mirror). I try to use or pack items that have two or three uses to eliminate bulk if I can. Great comment and feedback! Much appreciated!

As A grunt from a much earlier period, I am wondering how often those new m-16 /M-4 goes down. The A1 we had seldom did if kept clean. Instead of the extra weight of a pistol and ammo. Would not a few more loaded mags be better. This LBE setup is almost identical to the army 60-70 and early 80 setups. except the Ifak. All we got where kotex's. I would recommend more water. Water is way more important than food. And once you actually get out and do extended walks you will burn thru a quart in no time. Electrolyte powder or at least salt. you will sweat it out, if not replaced down you will go in just a few hours. Wool sox med wt. I recommend you get a SERE kit. Altoid can size. I use a similar set up, Alice H harness with a Molle belt. More ammo, a bladder can do H harness mounted or stand alone (good with armor), a slightly larger fixed blade, and a smaller butt pack for now. Our quick access miscellaneous stuff pouch is very similar, but I add some electrical tape, zip ties, a multitool and an extra pen light. But I totally forgot the spork..... The best part is that it intergrates clean with parkas, chest rigs or plate carriers. And over uneven (most) terrain it is more efficient to carry the load lower on the body near the hips and keeps your center of gravity in a more natural position. The Brits and other Europeans still run a belt based system for a good reason that we civvies need to consider; they do less the mechanized or motorized work than our army. Ive even toyed with grabbing a British belt rig just to try it out

Nice! I still use the basic LBE setup as I did back in the day only modernized. Instead of the canvas M56 or LCE1/2, I use more modern lightweight kits. Maybe not as lightweight but more user friendly. Having been in situations where “more” rounds were needed, I tend to go heavy, even after retirement, in ammo. I like your smoke grenade idea. Here in kommiefornya, not allowed. Can’t wait to leave! I have different kits for different situations. Your patrol loadout seems pretty spot on. One thing I “would do”(🤣🤣🤣), is take those two spare mags out of the buttpack. Especially if they’re buried under other items, that could cost you. You can always use a mag pouch mounted on the side of your buttpack. My kit, running from left to right consists of: M249 drum pouch (holds 6-7 5.56 mags), Comms pouch, canteen w/cup in BHI case, BHI Buttpack. Attached to the buttpack is IFAK/Trauma pouch on one side and EnE kit on the other. Moving on, another canteen w/heater in BHI carrier, Gerber LMF II knife, multi tool, M249 drum pouch. This is mounted on a HSGI Battlebelt system. I forget the maker of the H-harness. On it is my strobe, TQ both carried low not up on the shoulders.

I have gloves, a radio, a notepad, a couple maps, 3 magazines, a monocular, a grayl water press bottle, head lamp, full face respirator, electric hand warmer, mini solar panel power bank, a silnylon poncho and a couple protein bars. Patrol is a relatively short period of time that your out or looking before your shift is replaced. All of my stuff for patrol fits in a spiritus mk3 rig.
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
My setup is much more relevant to a “civilian” fighting load for a variety of reasons. In the minuteman concept, individuals won’t be running off looking for a fight. While we can always debate the necessity, I think it’s prudent to have a kit designed to patrol, recce, and survive the elements and even a basic E&E setup. For whatever SHTF scenario you define for yourself, it’s a good setup to scout your property, recon a local disturbance, patrol and check your trot or trap lines, do maintenance on game cameras, etc. People often want to “ask why”, I always say I do this hoping I never have to really do it at home. It’s part hobby, part keeping my skills as fresh as I can. I like the old-school LBE setup like this for a couple reasons. I don’t like them when wearing a large pack, but with a smaller “assault” or sustainment pack (if weight is kept low) is fine. As a small pack or as a stand-alone, it’s a great patrol rig as it’s more open on your upper body and it doesn’t trap heat as much. Suspenders are a must for load-bearing and balance. With the Smersh suspension, you can easily carry a 2-3 day load without your sustainment pack. You won’t be doing speed reloads, but the added protection of closed pouches is better suited to thicker, rougher terrain where you do more trekking, scouting, and reconnoitering than “kicking down doors”. At the end of the day, ones operating area and priorities are going to determine one's loadout, like the old saying that goes "Mission dictates gear"!

I have the Krydex Mk3 rig and like it alot in a more "grey man' setup or wearing with a larger pack setup! It's also great for keeping with a GHB in the car due to its size and ease of concealing under a jacket or large flannel. Plus you can set it up so many different ways to suit ones specific needs! Glad to see the Spiritus model is working out for your needs!

I rather like my Bundeswehr web rig. It’s got it all. It was cost effective but difficult to find pouches for (I like going to Army Surplus Shops and I am a truck driver so I get around) because the mountings are bespoke and the belt is thick. It does work with molles everywhere except the back and suspender carry points. But it’s quiet and easy to move in.

@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
Simply, they're what I've always used and already have ... No need to spend extra money if I don't need to. Plus all my water bottles have accompanying nesting cups to go with them. If I was gifted a few I'd certainly use them but I'm good with what I've got! Good question
@scapegoat7622 жыл бұрын
Can you reach that TQ with your right hand if your left is incapacitated? One canteen? Have you actually humped more than a mile? Real thirst comes on quick and will put you out of the fight. Half of your basic ammunition load in a butt pack when you have four mag pouches? Sometimes breaking contact isn't immediately possible, and sometimes it requires considerable suppressive fire.
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
So yes I can reach it with the right hand although it wouldn't be a bad idea to add another one up front or tucked in between the 2 right side mag pouches... Good observation. As far as water goes... First I have rucked more than a mile, with gear, over varied terrain on many occasions and its something I continue to do in my normal workouts. In fact part of determining this patrol setup was by putting many miles on it to get it to where it worked for me. A few considerations I have with water, and I alluded to this in the video, that one is likely to have a wearable hydration bladder set up and/or an additional pack with them for sustainment purposes. In addition to this I'm in a water rich environment and therefore water is never far away hence the reason for having water purification methods in that kit. But again this is what works for me through experience in my area and knowing my own body. On magazines, I know the urge and norm is to go with a full combat load of 7 full mags or more with vehicular mounted bail out bags loaded with more mags. My thinking is a base load of 1 in the rifle, 2-3 in the front left pouch for ease of access and then 2-3 in the butt pack for a total of 5-7 mags to work from. Like I said in the video that this is really a combination of a fighting load and an evading load so I sacrificed a bit of readily available mags by having more readily available mission required items for observation, note taking, and communications by having those needed items within easy reach without having to remove the rig. If I end up exhausting the mags I do have readily available (3-4) and I'm still not able to "mach schnell" then I screwed up in my primary objective of observation... I appreciate your comment...
@scapegoat7622 жыл бұрын
@@themodernminuteman2557 Mission drives equipment. Take the worst possible outcome and your hoped-for outcome, then find an acceptable calculated risk somewhere in between. Optimism is the enemy of sufficiency. Water is absolutely mission essential. Very few things, short of physical trauma, can fubar a mission like going black on water, and under real stress, the amount you will consume is amazing. Having water with you, instead of in a ruck you dropped upon contact, and/or counting on finding, then purifying water as a primary strategy, is important. Have you considered mounting a small bladder on your harness, between your shoulder blades? Or a small stand-alone bladder with shoulder straps? Ammunition can quickly become survival essential, and in that instance very little else will substitute. Carrying 5 mags may well fit your intended mission, but only 3 of them are really usable. The 2 in the buttpack might as well be left back at your secure area, or in that dropped ruck, and are really just dead weight in the LBE. Any situation in which a TQ is needed, it is needed right then, and if there is any set of circumstances in which you could not access it, quickly and reliably, then that's probably what will happen, eventually, to you or someone else. A starting point for TQ placement is as close to centerline of body as possible, perhaps favoring your least dexterous hand, slightly above your navel, adjusting, usually upwards, for comfort and access if any vehicular transport will be involved. I hope you will find some of this helpful, which is my intention, rather than being negative.
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
You're all good! I do have a stand alone bladder with straps as you stated all set. So that's gtg... For the TQ issue putting one more accessible up front makes more sense anyways. As far as mags go I could free up the mag pouch on the front right for 2-3 more mags and the GP items can go in a pocket or even be moved to the butt pack. I do appreciate the feedback!

Have you ever heard of the "Line gear philosophy"? I just noticed you have a lot of things you are strapping to yourself that are essential to surviving comfortably in the field, do not help in a *u* fight, or directly afterward. That extra weight is going to just get in the way if you cant drop it quickly before an engagement, or after being ambushed. it would seem many of the items could be moved to the day pack, specifically the contents of the butt pack.
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
Very familiar with it and you'll see it more as I dive into my layered or tired setup. Like I had said in the opening of the video covering its use and idea behind it. This specific patrol kit is a blend of a fighting kit and Evader kit. A sustainment pack still plays a big role here for extending a patrol or for mission r activity specific items and gear. Appreciate your comment! I think its important to understand line gear and how it works as a overall system.

Working on building my lbe loadout. How did you decide on the number of mags you wanted to run? I’m torn between 6 or 9 on my rig plus the one in the gun. Figure if you need to break contact ammo could go fast especially if your doing any bounding. As always thanks!
@themodernminuteman25573 ай бұрын
My thought process is 6 on the rig with a few spares in the buttpack or daypack. If you want more then add a chest rig to the setup. But it is so dependant on what your plan or goal is you are carrying out.
@imying722 жыл бұрын
You need to add a lot more to your med kit. You should have a tourniquet for each extremity, a naso or oral pharyngeal airway, some sort of occlusive bandage, and some sort of OB with a flutter valve. A pair of trauma shears are critical as well.
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
That specific kit has a pair of trauma shears on the backside of it and inside is a set of chest seals, clotting sponge, rolled gauze, pressure bandage, and a nasopharyngeal airway along with a small booboo kit. I should add an extra TQ for easier access on the front of my rig... Our larger group kits contain multiples of the aforementioned items for group incidents. In a remote situation where this is really happening to the civilian partisan and proper trauma care is non existent or very far away than needing multiple TQ's for my person, while it would be a valiant attempt at saving my life, is probably all for none at that point. In a military environment with access to Helo extractions and forward operating bases with staffed trauma teams then the reasoning for multiple TQ's is well warranted and can/will make a difference. Appreciate you adding your insight!

@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
One guy in our group is licensed. We mainly use MURS frequencies for our normal communications, so no licensing is required! Plus, with MURS you are "allowed" to connect to external/exterior antennas and you can transmit at up to 2 watts, in addition you have 38 PL codes for each of the 5 MURS frequencies giving you a bit of extra privacy. These are just a few of the advantages in using MURS for group comms versus FRS or GMRS frequencies... Plus, as with most hand held units, you can still monitor all frequencies available for gathering info... If you're not familiar with MURS check out this article on its usage! www.itstactical.com/digicom/comms/the-best-kept-secret-in-radio-communication/

The mag pockets are too big for 2 ar mags and too small for 3 mags and there is no retention. So the options are either keep the flaps closed or lose your mags. @themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
This is specifically for longer range foot patrols. I have it setup as a combo for patrolling and for evading/surviving. Body armor definitely has its place in ones kit and it is mission dependant as to whether or not you need to wear it. For my use its patrolling a large piece of property gathering information about who may be coming through and what is going on around neighboring properties. Get in, set up an OP, and get out with no one being any wiser to your presence. That belt setup can sustain me for a 24 hour period and adding a pack only increases the duration of the time needed to be out.

Socks are in the butt pack, maps are laminated (in fact having a laminator is even mentioned), water purification tablets are in the water bottle carrier, so on and so forth. Second on weapons systems. It was clearly stated the use with both AR and AK platforms. In fact there's even a picture of it in use with an AR and a prior video utilizing the AR platform with this specific piece of kit. I utilize both platforms and point out that one benefits of this setup is the ease with which it can support mags for both rifles. Both rifle platforms have proven themselves in countless conflicts around the world time and time again. For a load out patrol you have it pretty loaded down. With this much stuff you would be better off with a bugout bag and a simple belt load out. The heavier the slower you are going to be and harder to hide.

Problem with the AKM copy in the U.S. is resupply. Not to argue the AKM/AR CRAP, simply, you can only carry 300 rounds, max. Resupply for .223/5.56 can come from a multitude of sources. Not so much with 7.62x39 and even worse for 5.45x39. Put your extra mags on your rig, not in the butt pack. Never expect that you can break contact. Nice job with the comms! Did I miss that you had a multitool? My advice is to downsize the fire kit and cleaning kit and add some actual food.

Thanks for your comment! I agree about the ammo issue. The AK74 round (5.45x39) is going to only get harder to find here. On a foreign field not so much so, but here it's definitely not going to be common. Its a specialty piece for me and that's it (thankfully I'm stocked pretty well with it). The AR is my go-to platform before anything else. I've gone to 3 mags in the front left mag pouch and am debating putting NVG's in the butt pack and putting spare mags in that pouch. Thanks on the comms setup! That method has worked well for me with all setups. Multi tool is in the GP pouch. In the process of pulling things out I neglected to look in the bottom of the pouch! Go figure. Yeah the fire kit is overkill. I have some smaller kits put together that I'm going to swap it out for. I'd rather have that bigger kit in my camp/bushcraft stuff anyways! For food I need to throw one of my 24 hour ration kits in there and then have 2 more of them in my pack for a base food kit! Great comments, appreciate it!

@@themodernminuteman2557 you are heading in the right direction and have done well. Not to sound arrogant on my comments, I'm a former Army 18A, 7thSFG, just passing on what I can.

@@nelsonward7981 thanks! I certainly appreciate feedback and the offering of different ways of doing things or pointing out if something was overlooked. It makes us all better prepared!

It was indeed new. I had literally gotten it a month earlier and was just starting to break it in. At the time the video was done, I had probably used it 2 or 3 times for simple walks around the camp property, working out how it fit me and my needs. It's a solid piece of kit that sees a lot of use now (as you would see in other videos that proceeded this one).

This is a “I’m moving in” kit.

I like the kit, but I can see a lot of things that won’t work if you intend on using that kit in and out of vehicles
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
Good observation! This is definitely not made for vehicle mounted ops.. This is set up for foot patrolling a large piece of private property! I have some videos coming up where I'll be covering my kit for in and out of usage! Thanks for your comment! Its appreciated!

Have to laugh at this setup. Served 22.5 years in Special Forces, started out wearing LBE, moved to a pilot's vest with attached web belt, then a H-harness stabo harness, SPG Vest, for a time an Israel Assault vest and lastly a London Bridge vest. An old sergeant once told me when I mentioned wanting to do some sewing and start using an Air Force Survival vest, "you young guys think you're the only ones with brains. You have this clever idea of trying something new to haul your shit. Well, we old timers were young and thought the same thing". He then showed me two variations of vest he used over the years. Yep, the first one was just like I wanted. Basically, what he was saying is there are few new ideas - but life is circle so we always come back. For me, a vest configuration was always better than LBE, or H-harness.

Thanks! Yeah it's funny how what was once considered old school becomes new again. No need to reinvent the wheel, sometimes we just need to look back a little to see how others before us solved the same problem or filled that need. Great comment!

On this same token I went from alice to the bajillion vest setups and have recently became a fan of running a shmersh rig over a slick carrier. I guess I ended up landing in the opposite direction. In classic split personality style I maintain probably 4 separate loadouts and cannot nail one down to a commitment.

Hard to get now what with the war in ukraine. Condor h harness and battle belt is a good similar alternative
@themodernminuteman25572 жыл бұрын
Yeah hard to get and prices/shipping have gone way up. For sure there are good alternatives out there for LBE setups!
