Scientists at the CERN research centre in Switzerland welcome the news that a new subatomic particle could be the Higgs boson, the basic building block of the universe. Spokesman for one of the two teams hunting for the Higgs particle, Joe Incandela, makes the announcement. Footage courtesy of Reuters.

Two hundred years ago, people experimented with electiricy. How the hell was this supposed to help people to stop starving? They didn't have an answer. Of course, today, electricity is used to power farming equipment for mass production and refrigeration for food preservation. My point is that we don't know how this new particle will be helpful to fighting hunger, or whatever. But knowing more opens up more possibilities than knowing less.

Just to clarify with people this is not the 'god' particle. It is a miss quote of a physicist that said something along the lines of it being so 'god dam' hard to find. The media then decided to spin it as the god particle. For those of you wondering what the 5 sigma represents it represents the certainty that they have found it. It basically means that the change of this being a fluke reading is 1 in 5 million.

Peter Higgs here is like Alan Grant in Jurassic Park part 1. Seeing something in reality, something that you've been studying and making theories about your whole life, seeing it become a reality and people to see it, that is what every scientist wants, isn't it? Alan Grant saw his theories about dinosaurs come true when he sees the herbivores travelling in herds for the first time and Peter Higgs here seeing the Higgs boson exist. Dear God this is what we live for, this is why people become scientists.

Leonard Susskind has an illustration, a number line showing the masses of the known particles, with 0 mass on the left and the Planck mass on the right (you apparently can't have elementary particles of that mass or above because they'd turn into black holes). The Higgs and all the rest are crammed in at the left edge of the line. Susskind's point is that there could be (probably are?) elementary particles waiting to be discovered all along that line! A great time to be alive.
