It's universal and also helps protect other people like co-creators or even family members who might want to continue the author's work in case of their death. @@LovelyArtofMine It's not a matter of respect it's a matter of principle, the purpose of copyright is to allow you to benefit from what you create, however, once it expires anyone can take it and make something new that benefits the rest of society, because it's not just the mouse, it's music and scientific papers too. And listen to yourself, this isn't just about KZbin Poops, all of Disney's golden age was built off the public domain, even Steamboat Willie, Disney doesn't have an original bone in their body! Why do you think they bought Marvel and Lucasfilm? Why do you think they've been making live action remakes of their old films? It's because the copyright extension they lobbied for has locked them out of the new works they could have made new movies out of. 50 years max, however I'd rather see 30 years, with the caveat it immediately goes public domain the moment the copyright holder dies, to prevent orphaned works and corporate media empires, because copyrights that last past the holder's death do not benefit the families, it benefits the corporate giants and them alone.

Just because people are making cheap horror grabs does not mean that the public domain is bad. It can inspire that, yes, but already existing works in the public domain inspired some of Disney's most iconic and profitable movies, as well as other projects like Cuphead (many of Flischer Studio's characters and shorts are public domain, aside from Popeye who will enter next year and I think Betty Boop). In other words, stop doing Disney's job for them.

I don’t have a problem with Mickey becoming public domain. The issue I have is just the lackluster quality of most of these new releases, just slapping Mickey’s face on a generic slasher or swapping a mutant rat with some Creepypasta-looking 3D model that clashes with the rest of the game. It’s just as shallow and halfhearted as the corporation currently is. If you want to make a Mickey horror game or film, do something more interesting with the idea. The short “The Mad Doctor” is public domain, make a spooky game based on that or inspired by it. Just do something; don’t be lazy.

as of January 1st 2024, steamboat willie, mickey's first short, is in the public domain. Meaning you can use mickey for what you want without copyright or legal issues. Though you can only use the designs from steamboat willie, because mickey is still a big franchise I guess

​@@UnfunnymanTSMG It's not because Mickey is a big franchise, it's because his old episodes will be released into the public domain with each new "season". Because in 1928 there were only three Mickey episodes: Steamboat Willy, Plane Crazy and Galloping Gaucho. You can only use the Mickey version from these three episodes... but next year (2025) 12 Mickey episodes released in 1929 will be released into the public domain... and every new year (until 2048) gradually all old Mickey episodes from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s will be released into the public domain.
