The Mongols first occupy a small island. Japanese samurai analyzed this and took countermeasures. In Japan, individual competitions were the norm. But it cannot be used in war. In other words, samurai used group fighting. The Japanese army's constant attacks day and night, the range of their bows. The rotting carcasses of cattle and horses were then thrown into ships, a tactic used to bring about plague. Furthermore, samurai had high fighting power and high morale. The Mongol army was unable to enter and was defeated at the seashore. And they were defeated. As they were escaping, they were hit by a strong wind and scattered. That second time was even worse. Because the samurai took precautions.

And so the Mongols learned, horses fight swifter on land than at sea.

Yeah, I can only imagine how much of an impression it would be, for someone learning about how accomplished the Mongols were only to then be turned on their heels by Japanese Winds and passionate defense of their homeland.

Japan skipped many ages entirely from stone age -> skip bronze -> iron age. They also skipped from bow age -> skipped crossbow age -> gun age. (remember that China had crossbow factories since B.C. era and Greeks invented crossbows without trigger even before this) Korea helped Japan skip bronze age, and Portuguese helped Japan skip crossbow age In a proper fight, Japanese would have been completely slaughtered. Japan at this point in time were using horrible weapons both in quality and effectiveness, and had horrible tactics, and had very disorganized military. Japan only became capable of invading foreign forces after imports of Western gun technology. Japanese were fighting very inexperienced, defeated slaves from China and Korea, some of which deliberately tried to disobey their Mongol overlord, and Mongols fought in a very wet climate that they are not familiar with (look at land that Mongolian controlled, vast majority is not in tropical climate) In proper fight, wherein Japanese fights in Mongol controlled lands, Japanese would be utterly annihilated.

@@serronserron1320 there wasn't no account on the Japanese side mentions any storm, there is one on the yuan side that was written later even then it says the army withdrawal after suffering too much casualties meeting is storm on the way home but even that contradicts itself later it said the storm was a lie. Again one did happened in the second invasion but only after months of battles, the Japanese side pretty much winning all of them, it's even debate on how much damage the storm actually cause.

To think Ghost of Tsushima is kind of historically accurate when it came to Mongols defeating the Samurai. The only part that is wrong is Jin stopping the Mongols. Nature defeated the Mongol threat twice as the Storms wiped them out.

Actually, influence of storm in this war has been stated in a bit hyperbolic manner. To be short, storm was nothing but "an additional factor" on the whole. Knowing that the war situation was not going in Yuan army's favor, Yuan-Goryeo generals decided a tactical withdrawal at a war council. According to "The Collected Works of Jingang (金剛集)," they decided to retreat temporally because some 300 military forces of WA had newly arrived in the midnight. During their withdrawal, their ships were overtaken by a windstorm. And then, a lot of them collided against a cliff, wrecked and sank off the coast. Thus, Yuan army was merely caught in a sudden windstorm at sea on the way to their homeland.

Don't downplay the imoact of the storms that wiped out the Mongol army. Another important aspect is that the Mongol's main weapon the composite bows became unusable in humid hot climate. That's why the Mongol empire couldn't conquer southern nations in S.E Asia and India as well.

The mongold might have had succes. If they had waited invade at another time. Except they invaded in the in middle of typhone season. And the ships used was designed for sailing in the ocean . Japanese marine archaeologists have parts of the navy . The mongols invaded by using small river boats ... That combined with typhone season givers mongol defeat.
