Now, if you are going back to the sixties when you build those older models, you have to throw the airbrush and the MCW paints out the window, and brush paint everything. Lol. The body looks great. I agree with you Monogram kits are great. I’ve never build a bad one. Thanks for sharing.

Matt, back in the late 70s I found a large scale 57 Chevy. My parents had a silver one that dad bought brand new. So I found the Testors silver in the spray can and went at it after the usual prep. Boy did it lay on nice! But as I was working on the rest of the kit the paint started to darken. By the time I was getting ready to put the body on it had turned a strange grey mess. I was crushed. I had been building kits for a few years and had won some ribbons at shows for a 55 Chevy "Badman" and a 59 or 60 Chevy wagon "Quicksilver". I noticed that the paint never seemed to completely dry. Several months later I pulled the kit back out. The paint was almost black. I got a pan and some mineral spirits and started to scrub with a toothbrush. Every bit of that paint came off! After a good scrub with soapy water and drying I painted that car a Duplicolor gold I found at Kmart automotive section. From what I understand that paint should have ruined that plastic but it was the slickest paint I had sprayed yet. I gave mom and dad that model for their anniversary. I found out that dad really wanted a gold colored one on the lot but it had been sold and bought the silver one. I never knew that. Funny how things work out. Later I found out that the silver had aluminum powder in it and if you didn't clear coat it would tarnish. So gloss coat or dull coat was used after that with no problems. The Mercedes looks fantastic! It will be a sharp addition to your display. Cheers Terry

I have used AK Extreme Metals aluminum paint. I got great results when I applied it over Tamiya gloss black. I did not thin it - use it straight out of the bottle. Mix it really well, and then mix it again! I found that the metal particles settle out quite quickly so the better it is stirred the better the results. I sprayed it in thin coats, close in, with low air pressure. I leave the paint to dry thoroughly - 4 or 5 days without touching them. I found that it can then be handled gently without any damage or residue on your hands. I did not overcoat it with anything. This is what worked for me. I am only telling you what I did, I am sure others have different ways of doing things.🙂

That old Mercedes is definitely coming along nicely Matt! That red pops! I'm currently building Monogram's '77 Jeep Renegade CJ7 kit and for the most part it's going good with the exception of the body as I've had to strip the paint twice now 😂 I deal with the camera focus issues as well so I can relate to the frustration. I grabbed a can of Krylon Satin Brown Boots and I absolutely love it! Definitely looking forward to more progress on this build!

Hey Matt! For metal finish you can't go wrong with Mr. Hobby Mr. Color Paint: Super Metallic 2, Super Chrome Silver 2. I know that's a mouthful, but it's a lacquer that is very durable and is great thinned with Mr. Hobby Levelling thinner like 70/30 Thinner/paint. Just spray it over a very glossy black like Tamiya LP1. you give it light coats to bring up the chrome shine to your liking, then stop. It doesn't need clear coating. The AK Xtreme metals are nice, but I find that it takes a long time to fully cure. I had the adhesive on Tamiya tape stick to it after it had dried overnight. Had to sand it off and redo it, so take care if your masking over it. Good luck!

Hello Matthew. Whatever chrome you choose I suggest using that companies' clear coat, such as if you are using AlcladII go with their Aqua gloss clear ALC600. When transferring "chrome" products use a pipette or eyedropper, cuz you can agitate the mix before putting into the bowl of your airbrush. Use a.35 or smaller needle/nozzle, Alclad laquers just fly out fast. With Alclad keep your pressure down to 10 to 12 psi and just whisper it onto the gloss black prepainted part. Less is more. When done and items are dry you can polish any chrome dust off with a Q-tip. While waiting for paint to dry I suggest using a cake saver as a dust cover. Also, if available, a food dehydrator to cure your fresh paint. They temp. out at about 104 degrees, safe for plastic. Cheers

Hi Matt. I have the same problem when I scribe door lines. I often slip and than need to repair. I don't know what you're using to scribe, but I recently invested in a couple of Tamiya Fine Engraving Blades, (0.15, 0.30 and 0.50mm) and the Tamiya handle for them. They are really an investment. The blades range in price from $20.00 to $35.00 each, but wow...I think they are really great and well worth the price. I haven't slipped out of the line yet and they cut really nice and with very little pressure. Again...if you haven't tried them, you might want to consider it. I enjoy your video's.

Nice! How much air pressure are using for MCW paint? 2 coats? Alclad chrome,, low air pressure and less is more! 10-15 psi tops, light, light coats. Watch the finish! Let dry and cure, handle as little as possible. Works for me. Good luck!

Hey Matt. The Benz is going look awesome. What comes to chrome paints I use Evergreen Chrome metal airbrush paint and it doesn't need to be cleared. It hardens quickly and it is odourless. It comes also in a brushable bottle but You apply it heavily. The airbrush version is applied very thin. I've used Alclad Chrome too, but the Evergreen is way easier and it doesn't rub off.

It goes together very well. Built one in '74, Or 75. Body was molded in silver then. It got busted up some years ago. Thinking about using the springs as coilovers one of my '40 sedan builds, on the rear axle. With the chrome off the grill, I am thinking about chopping it and using it on my '32 five window coupe hotrod, see if that might be cool.

@@modelcarvideos5829 Yep, and proud about it! If one of my models gets broken beyond repair, I will recycle the parts that I can use on other builds. I like doing things outside of the box, making something uniquely my own. I am also playing with an idea of using a Pyro '34 Auburn speedster grill from a couple of models my father built back in the early '60s. That he never really finished. These two grills are already cut down. This would be used on one of my '25 'T' chopped coupe projects. And a different engine in it, not sure yet which one that will be yet, Just Not that big Lincoln engine.

That Spaz Stix paint is for lexan bodies, you can use it but that's why you don't get to have a durable finish with it.

If Revell and Monogram make the same vehicle, Monogram's will be 78 parts and the Revell will be 110. Being a Monogram Zombie myself I always found that Monogram tended to fit better and I finished them more often as a junior model builder.

Have a question for you, if i may ask? Have you ever "kitbashed" one of the GMC snowplow trucks before? I'm trying to find a way or if there is someone that makes a long bed instead of a short bed for that truck? I found a pic of a Chevy Scottsdale(early 80's i think) that i would like to make a model of. If i could send you a pic of the truck, how could i go about doing that?

Regarding the chrome paints. I have used the all over the past 10 years. The AK paints are great for every metallic finish EXCEPT chrome. I also tried the Spaz Stix and did not have great results. Alclad is by far the best finish and it is not that close. My problem with that is the gloss black of theirs. It goes on great, but I have to leave it in the dehydrator for a full 24 hours or when I handled the parts the heat from my fingers softened it and I would have to strip it and start again. I plan to try the MCW hardener to see if that cures it. As far as what kind of clear to put over the chrome - just don't do it. Any type of clear including 2K will make it look like silver paint, very disappointing. The Alcad Aquagloss is the least offensive, but it still diminishes the shine some, and Lord help you if you don't clean your airbrush within 10 minutes of your final spray, as I had to use straight xylene and much patience to get it all out. Amazing given that it is a water based finish. The alcad chrome is fairly durable if you do not get anything on it (such as decal solution, CA activator, etc.) which will trash it instantly. Just handling it seems to be ok. Hope this helps...
