Reasonable creative control is that it's within reason on BOTH Sides not just WWE like Bruce/Eric make it sound like. Was it within reason for Bret to lose to Shawn? Sure, but it also was within reason for Bret to say they either have a non finish, Shawn put him over 1st then return the favor or Bret put over an opponent of his choosing. Bret didn't ask to beat Shawn clean, then beat Austin clean on Raw the next, Taker the following Raw etc. and basically run through WWE's roster before going to WCW. That would be unreasonable. He said not to lose to a specific opponent on a specific night even saying that he didn't have to win, just not lose. That's within reason.
@1981bigdee
@1981bigdee 3 ай бұрын
It wasn't reasonable to have a non finish in the last ppv match they'd have for at least 3 years. What would've been reasonable was for Shawn to win the title due to outside interference. The bottom line is Bret just didn't want to drop the title because he truly thought all this was real

The issue with Brett coming back at later time and dropping the belt was after SS he would no longer be under contract. So how was that fair to other guys in the locker room to have someone who no longer worked for the company to be champion. That makes no sense. Brett couldn't understand it wasn't all about him.

Bret didn’t want to lose to someone that wasn’t a professional and wasn’t a quality human being. He would have lost to ANYONE ELSE. It wasn’t about legacy. It was about integrity.

Hey Bruce, Eric, Conrad... I heard you ask at the beginning of the program why the screwjob was still so talked about. I'd like to tell you from a young (at the time) fan's perspective why I think it's talked about so much still today. In my opinion, The Montreal Screwjob is still such a popular topic because it was basically the hook on which so much of the golden era of wrestling hangs. Think about what all happened BECAUSE of the Montreal Screwjob. The Monday Night wars hung on that hook... The Attitude Era's beginning hung on that hook.. The Greatest WWF villian of all time was born in the screwjob... Mr. McMahon... The Birth of that Character led to one of the biggest rivalries in wrestling history... Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mr. Mcmahon... And the ripples from the Montreal screwjob just go on and on and on from there... It was the MAJOR event that set SO much wrestling history in motion, and lets face it... The Attitude Era was the absolute pinnacle in all of professional wrestling... So, ofcourse.. the event that set so much in motion is a big deal... That's why we still talk about it.

Because Vince told him to swear to everything holy he didn't know about the screw job. McMahon told Shawn, Triple H, anyone/everyone that was in on it to deny it and put all the blame on Vince for the whole thing. Shawn wouldn't admit to knowing about it until many years later. So he couldn't celebrate or thank Bret, etc. He was to act as if he didn't get it either, grab the belt, and get to the dressing room. It wasn't about losing the title, Bret didn't have a problem with that, his problem was two fold, A) He didn't want to lose it to Shawn specifically and B) He didn't want to lose in Canada, Bret claims that Michaels told him to his face that he wouldn't put him over, so that's a big part of it.

Cool the why did he refused to drop the belt to Stone cold before the pay-per-view? And by the way would it be reasonable for Hulk Hogan to say that he didn't want to lose in America? @@TL2354 You fail to mention that Bret had reasonable creative control at that time. It was in his contract, so he literally didn't have to drop it to Shawn if he didn't want to. Obviously he would have to drop it to somebody, because not dropping it on the way out wouldn't be "reasonable," but Bret would have literally dropped the belt to anyone else but Shawn, because Shawn was a giant prick who nobody could stand, and had heat with everyone else in the locker room outside of his little clique.

Plain in simple, Bret did not wanna lose to Shawn period. Especially in Montreal. Bret was willing to drop the belt to Austin , Mankind, or taker. Bret was ok to drop to anymore but Shawn. Bret took it personel that year in June, when Bret told Shawn he would have no problem putting him over. Shawn replies I've would have not done the same. That's it. Bret took it personal. Why would I put a wrestler over? That wouldn't do the same. Both Bret and Shawn have gone on record. So has Mick Foley and Jim Ross. To clarify the conversation backstage that summer of 96.

I think the biggest enemy in this situation was timing. If Bret had been able to stay until Wrestlemania 14 he could have dropped the belt to Austin. That would mean Austin would've beat the top heel for the belt and got revenge for his loss to Bret at WM 13. Plus it would have allowed the Sting/Hogan rivalry to finish up in WCW clean without the cloud of Bret coming into WCW and despite being red hot, put on the undercard. Sting could have had his run and Bret could come in and go straight after Hogan.

From Survivor Series 95 to Survivor Series 97 he had great match after match and each one was completely different. His promos in 1997 were the best he ever did so I just don't see why WWF were so eager to get rid of him. Why would you just betray a guy who loved your company? Does anyone know the reason Vince didn’t think he could fulfill Bret’s contract all of a sudden? They had the money for Tyson, and on top of that Brian Pullman died only a month prior, Bret didn’t want to go to wcw his hand was forced and then screwed on the way out. That always boggled me, Bret was at his leak at this time,

Bret was offered big time money from WCW. Tyson was there for a smaller stint and grew up a fan of WWF. That would be my best guess!

It wasn't all of a sudden. It's not like he told Bret that he couldn't afford his contract and then the next day paid Tyson to come in to his company. All this took place between months of each other and a lot can change after a few months.

@@davidgriffithsbjjcoach7207 🤨 You know what? I was responding to the original comment not yours. In any case, why would Vince have to take the belt off of Bret when Bret initially agreed to lose to Shawn? It wasn't until the last minute that Bret changed his mind because of what Shawn said to him.

Bret always has been and always will be my #1 (going back to his original short 1989 solo run). Despite that, if Vince says you're dropping the belt... you DROP the belt!. End of story. It doesn't matter how big an a**hole Shawn was at the time. Bret should be remembered soley for his career, instead, a big part if his legacy IS the screwjob. For Bret to have refused and begun to politic when he has always been critical of others who did, no matter the cause, did his career more harm than some of the worst political players there have ever been

This was fascinating. I go back to Corny's kayfabe commentary timeline comments....why in the fuck would you not take the belt off of him PRIOR to Survivor Series. He's leaving. He's in talks. He gets the belt...Shawn says his stupid comments about not putting him over when Bret is trying to give him an olive branch. You could have continued with the whole screwed angle...but have Undertaker as champion. Bret and Shawn just as a regular match. I know in reality this was due to already promoting Survivor Series in Montreal with Bret as Champion, but instead you could have promoted it as a loser leaves grudge match. I also get that the reasonable creative control clause comes into play here but if Bret isn't champion going into Survivor Series...that's a moot point surely?

If Bret Hart had never left WWE and if Vince would be able to afford to keep Bret would Bret still had won? I always wonder what the outcome could have been if the Montreal screwjob never happened. I had heard that were plans for Bret to drop the tile until WrestleMania 14 to Austin. Or Bret Hart and Michaels rivalry continue at Degeneration X PPV. Lots of what if questions if Bret Hart stayed.

Ive always felt deep down it wasn't about the money. Vince turned around and dropped massive $ on Tyson. I always thought the reality was after Bret and Shawn got into that squabble where Bret ripped Shawns hair out, Vince either realized he had to choose one guy or the other (not sure if Shawn may have told him he had to choose or he came to that on his own). Bret was doing some of his best work of his career and the $ excuse is BS or they wouldn't have been able to get Tyson so why get rid of Bret if not having to choose one or the other.

The best solution for Montreal was a triple threat with Bret vs HBK vs Undertaker. Taker gets added because Kane screwed him out of the hell in a Cell match which was a number 1 contender match. Taker pins HBK & wins the title. Bret comes out on Raw & says it's bullshit he lost the title without being beat & quits. Then HBK beats Taker at the Royal Rumble due to Kane's interference that way we still get Austin Vs HBK & Kane vs Undertaker at WrestleMania 14.

I cannot for the life of me understand why two things are SOOO difficult for people, even biased opinions like Bruce & Eric to understand. 1. Bret told Shawn he would be happy to put him over, Shawn responds by saying, "I appreciate that. but I would NEVER do the same for you..." For anyone to not understand WHY Bret would be extremely pissed by that is mind bending. Even for an idiot like Eric. 2. Vince gave Bret a "Reasonable Creative Control" clause in his contract in his last 30 days. Period. End of Story. Bruce's nonsense about "Bret didn't get to make that call - Vince does" doesn't work under this scenario. Vince forfeited that right when he gave Bret that clause in their deal. Final point. Bret gets criticized for talking about Montreal. But whats he supposed to do? People are STILL talking about this years later.

I’m half way through. I like both guys, but how is there not any discussion about Eric’s plans for Bret. Everyone has analyzed Montreal to death. It would be so much more interesting if Bruce pressed Bischoff about his lack of plans!! That is the real crime of Montreal. Vince beat Bret twice. Once in the ring and then he took over as the #1 heel attraction in the business. Bret went to WCW where they gave him zero. He should have immediately funded with the NWO and beat member after member until a major build to Hogan.

The problem was that the contract was done on the Thursday or Friday, and wcw was going on tv for the 1st time post signing the day after survivor series. Which if bret has the belt bischoff goes on tv and announces that wcw has signed the current wwf champion. Where as if bret loses then it’s “former wwf champion.” Not a big deal now but back in that early-mid 90s the champion was pretty much everything.

how anyone can possibly believe this isnt a work is crazy to me. use some logic please. these guys are characters, actors and showman. they make tv shows for you multiple times a week. bret happens to be leaving the company on the day they are doing a show in his home country. They also just so happen to have a full film crew all around everyone because they are filming a coincidental documentary at the same time. bret just so happens to have access to wearing a wire for a meeting with vince, so every major part of this is fully documented in the best possible way. the wwf, at the time, was still trying to recover from the post hulk hogan era and was losing popularity rapidly. this is so obvious, its frustrating lmao. but i shouldnt be surprised at how ignorant the general public is, they believe everything they are told....everything.
