Two things: 1) Justin Hayward is one of the classiest and most talented rock artists in R&R history. He and the Moodies created some of the most incredible, beautiful music of the 1960s-1970s. The fact it took until 2018 for them to be inducted into the Rock Hall is so symbolic of how underappreciated they were throughout their history. 2) The year 1971. Without a doubt, the greatest year in rock history. I realize Justin was reviewing July 1971, but even there you got a glimpse of The Who- Who's Next, Rod Stewart- Every Picture Tells a Story, Paul McCartney- Ram. And on and on and on. Beatles fact- 1971 was the greatest year for solo Beatles music. John's Imagine, Paul's Ram, George's All Things Must Pass (yes, released late 1970, but went to #1 in 1971, ended up being the #1 selling album of 1971, and won a slew of Grammys for that year. Oh, and near the end of 1971 George released the Concert For Bangladesh album. Ringo? In '71 he released his best single ever- It Don't Come Easy. When it comes to music, 1971 and Justin Hayward were unmatched.

Unlike a lot of other artists who were profiled, he never felt the need to trash another artist, even if it was music that he didn't listen to, focusing instead on the quality of the production. He's a big reason why he's still touring with the Moody Blues music as relevant today as it was over 50 years ago. By the way, I wonder how that Stephen Stills single got released without anyone noticing that his first name was ridiculously misspelled?

Justin and the Moody Blues blessed us with such a prolific amount of glorious music that I can’t really imagine my life without them. I finally got to see the Moodies’ “Other Side of Life” tour mid ‘80’s and even though Mike Pinder had left, the concert was heavenly. It was particularly interesting to see the Audience album included as I’ve owned the album for over 40 years yet never hear mention of it. The gatefold cover is fabulous and the band does a decent cover of “I Put A Spell On You”. Nice to hear Justin’s thoughts on Greg Lake too. Not only was he a great bassist, Greg’s solo (acoustic) performances were superb. “Who’s Next” is my favourite album from The Who, not a bad track on it. As always, a gem of a video YP, thank you.

Agree about Justin, the Moodies, and Greg Lake. The fact that it took so long for the Moody Blues to be inducted into the R&R Hall (2018) is ridiculous. They are one of the most imaginative, talented and UNDERAPPRECIATED bands in music history.
@markb202 жыл бұрын
@@lindadote I've had my own list of glaring omissions the Rock Hall ignored over the years, and at the top were always The Moody Blues and Yes. Two others I wanted in were The Cars (New Wave pioneers) and Chicago (rock band with a brass section). Their deserved inductions had nothing to do with commercial success or popularity, but rather their pioneering musical paths. Once the psychedelic experiments of the 1960s were over, bands like Yes, the Moodies, ELP, Genesis (the Peter Gabriel version) and others blazed an amazing new trail with their "progressive" music. For me, Yes' "Close To the Edge" and The Moody Blues' "On the Threshold of a Dream" are ground zero for that incredible kind of music. And you're right; for some reason all those bands suddenly got the votes for induction, one after another (at least Graeme Edge and Ric Ocasec lived long enough to get in. Chris Squire of Yes sadly didn't, and obviously Greg Lake and Keith Emerson never will. I simply can't comprehend the logic of the voting process. Rap, Hip-Hop, Country, Jazz- they induct artist after artist from those genres, but ignore incredible rock bands like the ones I mentioned? What a pathetic joke the Hall is. Oh, have to add one more thing- I saw your comment about The Who's album "Who's Next", and how every cut on it is great. I have always raved not only about that album being PERFECT from beginning to end, but also about the year it came out- 1971. I have written endlessly about that year, how without a doubt it's the greatest year in rock history. No other year is close. I have a running list of over 30 incredible albums from that year- iconic lps, watershed albums, career-best lps. And yes, perfect albums, such as Who's Next, Led Zep IV, JT-Aqualung, Neil Young-After The Gold Rush, Carol King-Tapestry, Rod Stewart-Every Picture Tells a Story... and on and on and on. You have no idea until you check out the whole year; it's mind-boggling. Sorry this post went on so long, but when it comes to music- well, like 1971's music list, I tend to go on and on too.

@@lindadote I kept smiling as I read each artist you brought up- yes, without a doubt we're of the same 'vintage'! I was a huge Traffic fan as a kid; my older brother always had classic lps like John Barlycorn playing, but I cherished their album The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971!). Golden Earing? Or course! I loved Moontan, and while everyone was drawn to Radar Love, my fav was always Candy's Going Bad. Mick Ronson? Oh my god, one of the most underrated guitarists in history, he's a perfect example of what's wrong with the Rock Hall (among other things). How is someone as talented as 'Ronno' NOT in the Hall?? The lead guitarist of David Bowie's glam period (The Spiders From Mars, etc), lead guitarist for Mott the Hoople, lead guitarist on Lou Reed's seminal lp Transformer (and musical arranger and co-producer with Bowie), every time I hear 'Walk on the Wild Side', I hear not only Reed's great lyrics, Bowie's superb production, but also Ronson's mesmerizing guitar licks. And Mick's session work over the 1970s-1980s is a who's who of rock legends. One of the saddest concerts I saw was a tribute for Freddy Mercury in the early 1990s after he passed away. Among the artists there was David Bowie, Ian Hunter, and Mick Ronson. They did a wonderful version of All the Young Dudes; not long after that Ronno himself passed away from cancer. Anyway, sorry if I'm telling you things you probably already know Linda, but it's just cool talking about these incredibly talented rock legends with others who appreciate their music too. Mark

@@f.w.2054 Totally agree about that too. While I'm not so much against Madonna's inclusion (other Pop legends like Michael Jackson are in), I've alway felt talented artists like Randy Bachman, who had TWO very successful groups (The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive), Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, The Firm) should get in somehow. Just doesn't seem right, though it's just one of many problems with the Hall.

Justin had a great list of songs that he got to critique. 1971. What a year! I was so delighted to see Justin Hayward as a guest reviewer. I’ve seen him live as a solo performer on many occasions. I like his solo work because he performs Moody songs that the group rarely, if at all, played in concert, like Watching and Waiting, You Can Never Go Home, Never Comes The Day, Candle of Life, New Horizons, The Actor, etc. Plus, it’s been a delightful to hear him play songs from his solo album Blue Jays that he did with fellow Moody John Lodge. Songs like Who Are You Now and I Dreamed Last Night. What a beautiful songwriter, singer, and guitarist! Love the thumbnail picture of Justin. Is that from the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival?

Justin was still a young man here. His knowledge was outstanding. (Especially the comments about production) From a personal perspective. I can't stand Ram by McCartney. Muzak. What was also noticeable, was the Beatles had broken up only 15 months before. But the record buying public, has moved on. Both countries 🇬🇧🇺🇲singles charts are different. UK album chart is starting to look Prog. Great outro music as usual thx.

I'd love to hear the other artists review of The Moody Blues song The Story In Your Eyes from 1971.

Oddly enough, "Story in Your Eyes" would never have made it onto Blind Date as Decca inexplicably passed on releasing it as a single in the UK. London Records (Decca's US label) did release it in the US where it reached #23 on the Billboard charts in 1971. I remember hearing it a lot on the radio then.

A Moody Blues song was previously mentioned in YP. Keith Moon reviewed Hayward's "Voices in the Sky" single in July 1968. He gave it begrudging approval. Not sure why Decca chose that one when "Ride My See-Saw" was the far better choice as a single from the "Lost Chord" LP. Keith would have really gotten into that one. In the US, distributor London Records overrode the home office and went with "See-Saw" as the lead off single to very good effect.

As a Yank I am constantly surprised at how many reggae 45's are big chart hits in the UK. This week David and Ansel Collins' Monkey Spanner is at #5 and their previous single Double-Barrel I think got to #1. I seriously doubt there are many here in America who have even heard of them.. A tribute to the British Trojan Records' marketing I would guess. (Technique was a subsidiary of Trojan) And this was even 2 years before Bob Marley and the Wailers broke worldwide with their album Catch A Fire. Before that they were pretty much a Jamaican market item.

Yep. In the late 60s and early 70s, the Melody Maker and other magazines published plenty of interviews and articles about Max Romeo, Desmond Dekker, etc. That type of music was pretty big among working class kids.

I really like it. I love the multiple electronic keyboard sounds countered by the acoustic sound of the ride cymbal. It really swings. MMH is one of my favorite LZ songs, but this stands quite nicely on its own. Who is it? Oh, Yesterday's Papers, of course, I like a lot of what they do, they need to make an album.

Is it my imagination or is the intro song Inagaddadivida" from Iron Butterfly at a different tempo? Intro was used as far back as in 1964 ..just saying!
