I love it when tracker composers push old gen console soundchips to their limits. Great Job!
@muscises18589 ай бұрын
This is not a tracker program, this is a MML compiler. MML is different from trackers in that everything is typed in as text vs. using a visual representation of each channel's commands and note data. I appreciate the kind words, though! If you download the source code down below, you can see how everything was laid out.

Holy smoke! The chord progression is very PC-98 and way groovier than any crazy jazz songs I've listened by far. Hope I can reach to this level as an amateur music producer. "Awesome" is an understatement here.

This is the first piece I’ve heard from you, but I’ve been listening to it nonstop since I found it. Wonderful noises!! For some reason, it gives me nostalgia for the atmospheric Wii/Wii U era Nintendo menus? I’m not a composition expert, so I could articulate why, but thank you for this tune ❤

Into the "sounds like Streets of Rage jar", lol. Thanks, funny enough Streets of Rage was one of the earliest influences for me to do music. I always thought Dance music was much more fun to write vs. Traditional music because of layering the parts over each other and the quick switch-ups you can do. You know what, because I keep getting this comment a lot I'm going to compile a playlist of my compositions that deserve the "sounds like Streets of Rage" comment.

@@muscises1858 Dang, I hate to be that guy then haha. I was going to say Yuzo Koshiro, but I couldn't think of his name at the time. I think 90's edm music plays to the Mega Drive's strengths, songs like Stereo Protect on pulse man are a perfect example of it.

I see how you use the PSG to produce the cymbal sounds but how do you produce the drum sounds? I am thinking maybe the DAC but that would be horribly processor intensive. Can you briefly explain what the channels are and what the columns of data correspond to? I presume on the YM chip you need 2 bytes, one for the pitch and one for the envelope to define the instrument?
@muscises18587 ай бұрын
The Drums were going through the DAC, and the reason why they sound so good is because the sound driver does a good job handling DMAs between the two CPUs. When it comes to how the channels are laid out in the test program, it's very tricky since some channels will phase in and out of the lower slots in the video. If you want to learn more about the technical side of the sound driver, here's the link: github.com/superctr/MDSDRV/tree/master/doc

@@muscises1858 I can't really do anything with those files as I don't own a PC but is this a full genesis emulator with 68000 and Z80?
@muscises18587 ай бұрын
Yes, Blastem is a (very-accurate) Genesis emulator. There's also nukeyt's emulator for the Genesis, github.com/nukeykt/Nuked-MD, but it requires a more processing power to even work.
@AKablalik6 ай бұрын
This sounds straight out of a hypothetical Ecco The Dolphin 3 on the Genesis that actually refined the gameplay of it’s previous games. Also before you guys say it, no, Ecco JR doesn’t count.

You can find me in the mmlgui discord server linked in the github repository: github.com/superctr/mmlgui Once you're there, you can ask questions on how it works, general support, or even learn about the world of MML. I will preface that this kind of stuff is much more diligent than using a music tracker, so it'll take some time to get proficient at it. Other than that, the community is excited to see you there!

is this emulation or physical chipz?

So, this is emulated through Blastem which is the most accurate Sega Genesis emulator. However, this can be played through the physical chips 100%. I have some hardware recorded on me, if you're interested.

11 channels, only six used; then the random dump and reclamation of addresses and registers.
@muscises18589 ай бұрын
The neat part is depending on which parts are playing, the registers will reflect it accordingly. A good example is seeing when I switch from full FM to FM + PCM.
