People rationalize doing the wrong thing when it benefits them. They will manufacture an excuse. They know it is not the right thing to do, but they do it anyway because if they don't, they may miss out on the advantage bestowed upon them. It is beneficial, from a strictly rational, strictly survivalist point of view. I don't believe that most people have evolved to the degree that they understand that humans should no longer compete and rather should be collaborating. Instead, they are subconsciously always attempting to win the competition for mates and resources. It doesn't help that we have entire markets dedicated to exploiting human vulnerabilities either..

"What is the purpose of morality?" Isn't it obvious that the function of morality is to minimize conflict and maximize the benefits of human collaboration?
