What i am looking for in a base building game? Progression and freedom of choice. You are left to your own devices to create something step by step that can withstand whatever the game throws at it. You streamline it, you improve it, you upgrade it, you take the joy of your creation becoming better and better at what its supposed to do. And now i sound like im building my own child inside a virtual setting. Hokay... lol

Yay! It might be the second time I could catch a premiere of one of those. Base-building is among my favs, can't wait to (re)discover new things! (some games take years to come, easy to lose track). Strategy games are far from being in the main spot in the industry as a whole, but for PC players and fans of this genre, it's a great time. So many choices, big and small. Thank you for making these, they are not only fun and a pleasure to watch but also a big help, especially for people that might not have a lot of spare time and/or pay close attention to Steam and other places. It didn't start, but keeping in mind all previous compilations I'm convinced I'm safe to say 'good job'!

I have been playing The Land of Vikings and am really enjoying it. The devs are quick to respond, the gameplay is immersive, and the details on the npcs, buildings and landscape are beautiful. The game is in active development, with improvements added often.

Thank you for another great list! Surviving the Abyss sounds exciting, gives me "Sphere"-vibes. I'm keeping an eye on Sapiens, because it's a very interesting project, it's just a bit different from the way it controls, but currently the long foreseeable development is what stops me from buying it. Personally, I liked Going Medieval so far, because the developers addressed a few issues I first had with their updates, although I do think they will have to rebalance the pacing of the game once they integrated all the gameplay features. I do really like the Z-levels though, digging deep to keep your food cool in summer and all that.

I can whole heartedly say that the only game on this list making it to complete game & future DLC’s IS GOING MEDIEVAL! The devs are so freaking active & great at keeping everyone updated weekly. What I look for in a base building game: 1. Less decorative, but not DOS pixelization. 2. Survival, but I’m tired of zombies, rafts, islands and historical overtones. A massive building-tree that starts off simple, but then gets more complicated for convenience, not need. 4. Unique character profiles that outright tells you what tasks they like or dislike doing, and they bring added bonuses and hindrances to the team. 5. Character profile backstory that hints to you ways to enhance and evolve said character to be even more useful. Such as, kinetically move objects with mind, abnormal strength to horde more materials, agile-speed, mind-control of animal/alien/monster, quicker learning abilities. 6. Task assignment queues with 3-5 follow up slots, so the character doesn’t stay idle after completing one task. 7. YDiscover uniquely different biomes with friendly&predatory animals/aliens/monsters evolved for each biome; with the ability to kill&butcher or observe&tame them.

Really tired of these rimworld clones tbh, just (re)using cheap low quality, non-animated sprites because that one game once pulled it off, without adding anything that new or meaningful to the formula :/ I knew of a few of them but didn't realize just how many they actually were until this video.

It's good to know that many of these games have very positive reviews. It's one of my favorite genres and I want to see it thrive. As for what I'm looking for in these games, I personally feels that we've gotten enough good rimworld clones and I just want more focus on AI autonomy and more "concrete" concepts on top of simulation. I like the idea of managing feudal families and things like that. It certainly could bring more interesting behaviors than the usual "Grug low sanity, Grug now punch random NPCs and destroy furniture"

Farworld Pioneers looks like it might do what Starbound promised to do and then failed at, which is freeform base building on alien planets. If that's what it delivers, I'm already sold. And Lightyear Frontier looks kind of like the farming version of Satisfactory, complete with co-op, so I might suggest it to the friends I'm building a base with in that game once we take a break from it.

@SirMorganD
@SirMorganD Жыл бұрын
My top would be: Arclands, I really like the spin on The genre making it more tower defense, but keeping the resource managing, also the artstyle is great and smooth, they know what they want to do. Diluvian Winds, again, the setting and the artstyle set it apart, and looking at all this samy rinworld clones, it really makes me want to try it. Surviving the Abyss, looks a Lot like one that's already out, but the horror part sounds promising. The Tribe Must survive, again, the horror part sounds good and looks different enough. And Sapiens, 'cus i'm a History nerd, I would like to see how far it goes in terms of technology. I really think having a good artstyle that stands out, and a interesting premise, is what makes You more than a rinworld clone. It's good that a Lot of games want to imitate a good Game, but they need to learn what makes it good, what makes Oxígeno Not Included and Rinworld very alike, and si different at the same time.

One of the games you haven't mentioned here is "Astro Colony" It's just released on early access at Steam and has nearly 90% positive reviews. I think just a few people saw this game coming but it could be one of the huge 2023 game surprises. It can be played in single and multiplayer mode. You think you are dealing in this game with the umpteenth spaceship / base builder game but... it can surprisingly turns into a real godsim game later. When having the cosmic harpoon knowledge developed the space base/ship you have designed you can not only harvest but also merge small astro planets together into very large planets in an endlessly expanded game universe in which your own creativity is the limit. I believe that this surprisingly good game with the potentional be get as great as Factorio deserves a lot more attention from well-known KZbin game influencers than this early access game has received so far. See by example KZbin video's as: "I Turned a Space Raft into a PLANET HARVESTER in Astro Colony" by ImKibitz or "What is... Astro Colony" by TheXPGamers.
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh Жыл бұрын
Because that has such a focus on automation and production lines, I'm planning to put that in my Simulation list. I know it's a fine line between that and some on this list, but Astro Colony does seem to go all out on the automation stuff before anything else.

you gotta love how PC gaming tech progressed over the years. we are actually nearly as far as 1992 today. no limbs, no leg animation, heck they don't even have legs. i miss the old days when developers used to add stuff with every game not to take things way.
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh Жыл бұрын
Those old days you're talking about are big AAA multimillion dollar productions. Devs didn't add all that stuff, publishers with tons of money did. You're comparing today's indie games with huge mainstream games of the past. Doesn't seem fair. You're also forgetting so many games in the 90s and 80s that didn't have all those details. For example, I bet you remember StarCraft. Did you know the same month as StarCraft releasing another sci-fi RTS released called WarBreeds? No, right? Looking back you only remember the good. Looking forward you only see the bad. It's an illusion based on nostalgia.

a game that I would really like to see and play is a '' sons of the forest '' ( for the pace , active ennemies raiding patrolling etc, nice landscape forest to cut down, rivers , lake , First person ,manual base building, traps, hunting ) MEET medieval dynasty ( for all the first person colony simulator and inventory and crafting and landscape, Hunting, building ) MEET mount and blade bannerlord ( for the ennemy factions , politics, special character you can recruit to help you inventory equipments ) . A mix of all that in First person with maybe possibility of third person view into the early middle age / dark age viking era in britain, map size starting a bit like the island Ark + possibilities to add other island around while the game progress, Solo or coop, while strating as a casteaway from a longboat on the beach, and the possibility to become a Jarl of a small city while waging war and fighting yourself as a warrior king with your 2 handed Dane Axe, or crazy bow, early medieval weaponry !

What I miss, is like having Wargame Red Dragon, but with base-building and secondary income. Like, how cool would it be to be able to grow/ improve a town there, or exploit local resources? It would cost you resources that you would otherwise divert to military units, but you could gain more income later on. Sure, you could risk the enemy blowing them up, but naturally, you would defend it, being for the enemy potentially a fortress to go around instead of through it (like the Maginot Line). Also, you would have the risk that it would be captured losing your investment thereby opting for the low-risk low yield in the back of the map instead of the high yield high risk near the frontline (for example). What I, personally, would prefer, is if there's also the possibility to have your income from the low-risk low-yield, even though more expensive, to exceed the income rate of the high-yield when pumping in resources like a madman. Like how you can in RUSE invest from the start in secondary resources while your teammates grind the primary resources. What also would be interesting is like in Command & Conquer Generals, there was the mode of "Art of Defense", or like the game "The Riftbreaker where you would face waves of enemies while you are not just building a base to fend off the next wave, but to grow till your last. Or, if you're that type of gamer, not destroy the enemy if though you could, and just try to hold off the waves building bigger and bigger. Normally, what's infuriating in most games, is the micromanagement of repairs/rebuilding destroyed buildings. When you become big, this becomes your burden. And it is not a good burden. Luckily buildings that automatically repair facilities are a blessing here. Something as a concept as well, which I liked, was with World of Warcraft where you could supply scraps to improve your own npc's so it would be more difficult for the enemy to go through them making them an actual hurdle and your defense would become less dependable on yourself. I don't find the above stuff anywhere. At least, not where it is graphically pleasing.

Interesting list. I am missing big games like Ixion or Frostpunk 2 on it though. For someone like me who enjoys the resource management and building aspects those are the ones I am looking at.

Thanks! Though this isn't all we have for new city-builders because these are base-builders, not city-builders. I have a whole other city-building list, as shown at the top of the video. It's already up if you'd like to check that out, there's some promising stuff in there I think.

As a reminder: The amount of positive "reviews" on steam isn't really an indicator of how good a game actually is. It just means that at the time a lot of people were convinced they are looking at a good product or are prone to sunk cost fallacy.
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 7 ай бұрын
It's not an indicator of that either, you're just putting a different implied meaning on a stat based on your own interpretation. All Steam reviews are is an indicator. Higher numbers of reviews are a better indicator because it's a larger sample size. That's all. Saying tens of thousands of positive reviews are all because people have sunk cost fallacy is conjecture at best. You can dismiss everything like that. Good critic reviews? Biased. 95% positive on Steam? Sunk cost. 9/10 on Metacritic? Clueless. Do that and you have no data left and nothing to talk about.
@Knutorius
@Knutorius 7 ай бұрын
@@GamerZakh I was only mentioning sunk cost fallacy as part of the equation, not the driving factor. Also, I was only talking about steam reviews here. When it comes to other platforms different factors come into play. When it comes to steam we are talking about either good or bad "reviews", nothing in between. To get a more precise picture we need to read individuals comments or actually try the game ourselves. With today's industry standards and the ongoing simplification of computer games to appeal to the most common denominator I don't see "the masses" being a reliable indicator of how well done a game is anymore.
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 7 ай бұрын
@@Knutorius Well we can check. Can you name a game that has 90%+ positive rating on Steam and it's actually a bad or mediocre game? Or a game with under 40% that's actually a good game? I've made upcoming games list videos for literally a decade. Of course Steam reviews aren't 100% representative to an individual buyer and neither is any other review. You can see an outlet give a 7/10 but if you want to know what it means you gotta read the review. Overall though, I continue to see Steam reviews being generally good indicators. I rarely see it go too far positive or negative from what a game actually is. That's what all review scores are. They're just indicators. Steam at 65% is an indicator. IGN giving a 6/10 is an indicator. Metacritic saying 70% is an indicator. The entire purpose of any review score is to be reductive. The review itself is still reductive too, no review can truly sum up the experience you'll have with the game. A hotel with 5 stars doesn't mean you'll enjoy your time there, but these ratings exist to minimise (not negate) risk to potential buyers. The only way for any buyer to know for sure though is to buy it and try it themselves, but at that point, their money and/or time is spent whether they like it or not. So we go back to scores.

My top picks are (in no order): Norland (reminds me of battle bros and I love that game) Land of the Vikings (love how the building burned down and the raid system look) Secondary Picks: Stranded Alien Dawn (looks cool) Light Year Frontier (the mech O.O the rest eh, not so sure) Generation Ship (like the concept of efficient production chains)

There are a few new announcements you've missed. First, Ascent of Ashes, a sci-fi colony sim by Vivid Storm Interactive, who are Rimworld's modders. Alien creatures, multiple factions, tactical combat with destructible environment, lots of stuff going on for this one in addition to building and survival. Second, Earth of Oryn, a fantasy citybuilder/colony sim with all the expected things and outstanding visual style. Combines larger scale of a citybuilder with customization depth of a colony sim. Currently on Kickstarter, 16 days left! Finally, Plan B: Terraform, a full-planet colony builder with logistics and, well, terraforming as an end game.
@GamerZakh

I didn't miss them all. Ascent of Ashes does look interesting, I'll keep an eye on it as it was basically just revealed 2 weeks ago. Earth of Oryn is as you said a citybuilder/colony sim, so it's mentioned in my City-building list. Plan B: Terraform is leaning more towards Simulation and train sim stuff, so that's currently slotted for my Simulation list.
