Daryl Turner had a shooting star career with the Seahawks, playing 4 seasons and scoring 36 TD's on only 101 NFL catches. I also enjoyed him in "Tecmo Bowl". I mean, look at the guy, he's so tall (he looks longer than 6-3 to me, and so fast)!
@gluserty

@@moonchild3130 Hey, yeah, I like that comparison! Wells compiled more receiving yardage during the seasons in his particular abbreviated career, but they both scored a lot of TD's and were major deep threats. I've seen some highlights of Wells and looked at the numbers (eye-popping), and I agree with Madden: seems Wells could dominate in the way Randy Moss later did. Wow, "What if?" indeed. Well, at least the Raiders later had Cliff Branch, who I think should be in the Pro Football HoF.
@ckobo84
@ckobo84 3 жыл бұрын
Branch didn't have a strong armed quarterback to properly use his deep speed. Stabler couldn't throw over 45 yards so they had Branch fake like he was going deep and come back up field. The deep comeback was invented due to Stabler's lack of arm, Branch's speed, and a line that could block all day. Wells was combined with the perfect quarterback to play to his strength.

Astro Turf makes some sense for baseball (even if making all the measurements “equal” cost the MLB of that time a lot of “Charm”). For football, it’s the worst idea EVER. Maybe that back injury was the downfall of the wide receiver. Maybe the trade was a done deal pending the physical in which Cleveland did not anticipate would become an issue, and maybe Seattle was hoping to push this trade through as quickly as possible before Cleveland realized they had just traded for a severely damaged player.

I remember this story back in '88. Turner was a very good receiver in the mid-80s early in his career, especially in '85...by '87, he was nowhere near what he was as a deep threat or receiver, in general...yes, very awkward press conference for sure, ....how the press conference was ever called in the first place prior to the results of the physical being reviewed was absolutely absurd. Great story-telling on your end about a player with great promise that unfortunately didn't live up to long term results....and how to never call a press conference and bring a player in for it until all facts have been verified

This video is the result of either poor research or it was intentionally left out that Burner Turner was a typical 80s cocaine abuser and Ground Chuck was done with the guy. In typical fashion, they tried pulling a fast one on Cleveland like the Cowboys did to the 49ers with Hollywood Henderson. Fortunately, the Browns were made aware of the addiction before the physical and had the team physician fail Turner’s physical to nullify the trade. Turner even tried rehab in ‘87 in order to play in ‘88 but the damage had already set in by this point and didn’t even make it through training camp with the 49ers before calling it a career. Im not sure how he’s doing did post-nfl life but drugs certainly derailed his career…not some ill-fated press conference. Not a big deal but sort of important to know if you’re going to make a video on the subject.

"Turner had more receiving yards..." No, he did not, Lipps had 860 to 725 for Turner. Turner did have 1 more touchdown catch than Lipps, but Lipps had one on a punt return and also led the league in PR yards and was third in punt YPR. I don't think the OROY award was particularly close. Yes, I admit punt returns are not technically offense, but I think they tend to be factored into awards. Even without the punts he had almost 20% more yards. Most importantly though Loo-Weee Lipps name was infinitely cooler (thanks to SquealingSalamander65 for the corrected pronunciation... if anyone knows the importance of a name it's someone called "Squealing Salamander")

I have always had a thing for the Seahawks as their original middle linebacker was from my hometown. Terry Beeson is from Coffeyville, Kansas. While he was never a great player, he was fairly good and considering that it's a town of around Ten Thousand, not everyday you meet an NFL player as a kid. He also was on the Oklahoma Outlaws, which he absolutely loved since it let him continue to play and get paid even with bad knees. Sorry, got sidetracked. The "back issue" was called just that by Seattle. What Cleveland Clinic found out is that it was Spinal Bifida. "Back Issue" is usually a thing that can get better with treatment, Bifida is not and that meant there was little to no chance he would regain the mobility he had in the 1984-85 seasons. You say the Browns messed up, the medical personal throughout Turners life up to that point messed up by not noticing a birth defect his entire life.

Not enough of info? He checked into a drug rehab after he got cut by the Seahawks. He didn't played in the 1988 season because of his stint in the rehab and people knew of his drug problems. Mostly though it was his penchant to drop passes. Even though he got historically high TDs catches in his first two season, he also didn't didn't have too many receptions either. I think he's a red zone machine if you seen the video, but unless Dave Krieg dropped the pass perfect into his hands or somehow Daryl Turner turned into world class route runner like Jerry Rice to get open, Turner will have a hard time getting easy catches. That tends to be his problem. Once defenses figured out on how to cover Turner.... getting safety to help cover on top, it was hard for him to get clean touches. Turner moves like a TE and play like one. He is not a deep threat and rarely goes up the middle for those tough catches even though he's 6"3. Too bad he couldn't put it together once defenses have corner played close to him and having safeties help covered him. That's the reason why his 3rd and 4th season with Seahawks declined badly and they needed to find other WRs. The drug problems is the reason why he couldn't get another team to sign him. The Browns did voided the trade because of his back issues, but other teams would've taken a chance on him if he was to work hard on his game and if he had stayed clean.

If I recall, I THINK he had done something to a disc in his back that wouldn’t heal right. Which is really too bad because Turner and Largent were tearin it up with Krieg tossin strikes. Seahawks had actually, finally, gotten really good. O was solid, D was solid, Special teams were solid. Coaching was solid. If Curt Warner hadn’t tore up his knee and Turner hadn’t hurt himself, the Seahawks may have finally pushed past the Broncos and got to the Super Bowl Way before they actually did. @@MarkZickefoose It depends on how you define awkward. Oxford has two definitions. I lean towards the definition, "causing or feeling embarrassment or inconvenience." The other definition: "causing difficulty; hard to do or deal with," in which case you have a good argument. Anyway, I apply a different word towards Art Modell's announcement that he would move his franchise--I call that the most _aggravating_ moment in Browns history.

As a steelers fan... I would love to crap on the browns... but this was when they knew WTF they were doing. In the midst of 4 division titles and a WC in a 5 year stretch.

@@bubbafug00gle51 actually they made some questionable trades and draft choices during this period. They gave up a #1 pick that became Jim Kelly for a bust LB Tom C. Who went to Canada after being drafted by the Bills. They had bad luck when Donny Rodgers died a week or so after Len Bias because of a drug overdose. Then trading two 1st rounders for Kosar. Then blowing #1’s in 87 and 88 on sorry LB’s and totally ignoring an aging OL. Then in 89, trading a 2nd for a #1 in 90, for a bust WR Lawyer Tillman. Clowns being Clowns.

I thought something outrageous was going to happen. The diagnosis seemed to be worse than what all parties expected. Nothing awkward about it, more inconvenient than anything.

Appreciate the content but facts need to be right. 2:22 Lipps had more receiving yards not Turner: 860yds 19.1y/r 9td vs Turner's 715yds 20.4y/r 10td plus Lipps led the league in punt return yardage with a td. 9:38 Turner spent 4 seasons in the NFL not 2.

2:01. Those Browns uniforms were awful. In fact, they were so bad that they only wore them for the 1984 season. How about a video about that? Lots of uniform nuts out here.

9:31 There's an article from 2011 where Turner himself explains how his drug addiction torpedoed his career: www.heraldnet.com/sports/too-young-too-fast/ It is the fifth result for "Daryl Turner Browns" on Google. Not sure how this was too hard to find, but I can't say too much - I didn't even know about this until seeing this video.
