I was swimming in Kootenay Lake in 1936 at age three. There was a wharf containing a slide and I remember sliding down over and over and being caught by my mother. So much of my joy was experienced at Lakeside Park which was so beautiful even then, with the cement sidewalk and wrought iron fence separating the sand from the grass.it’s so classy. My family moved to the coast when I was ten, and I missed the beauty of Nelson and all my friends who I played with up on Gore street. Sylvio Benedetti, Johnny Misseracca, Angelo Volcano, Dick Ramsden, - but no girls on our street! I’ve been back to Nelson four times, and am still impressed with the beauty, my favourite park, the fact that my two houses , one I was born in and the other that I remember, still stand, and the surrounding mountains that seemed like body guards. I had three sisters, and my only brother, an RCAF pilot in WW2 was killed. His name is on the cenotaph in Nelson. Having visited My old home town the last two summers accompanied by a daughter, I didn’t notice any homeless people , yet had I seen any, it wouldn’t have surprised me given that so many cities in Canada and elsewhere have countless numbers of homeless people, especially Vancouver and Victoria. It’s sad to see people suffering so badly, and needing help. We drove all over Nelson and had no issues at all with other drivers, finding them courteous and respectful. The people were welcoming, caring and friendly. I hope to return soon with grandchildren to show off my birthplace where I spent ten of the happiest times of my life.

Homelessness and drug addiction is everywhere in Canada. Nowhere is free of it but at least Nelson has a beautiful lake and mountains with snowboarding not far.
