This is the second video in our Algonquin series, recounting our 3 week canoe camping trip across Algonquin Park, Canada in the fall of 2019. This was our first portage trip, and as you will soon find out, neither one of us really knew what we were doing. Our route started and ended at Opeongo, stretching up to Brent then back down. This video will take us from Happy Isle to Burntroot.

I've got to say, I'm always impressed by those who have the patience to stage shots, get that right point of view, etc. The results are great for audiences, but I don't have the patience. I'm typically filming for my own future-self anyway... So I guess I'm saying, Elena - I think I'd be frustrated too! :)

I couldn't stand these staged shots!! Especially when it was raining, I was tired and hungry, the last thing I wanted to do was canoe the extra length back and forth just to get that "perfect shot" (as Karam would say 😂). But, it does definitely make for amazing shots and production value afterwards. I've come around to it since seeing all the footage!

Thank you :) Actually I think that we went in the perfect time of the year for a trip like this! our first week the temperatures were about 20 - 25 during the day with sun mostly. Towards the end the nights got down to 1 - 3 degrees and it was wet and colder (this is almost mid October). And we really didn't encounter that many mosquitos, only on a few portages that they bothered us a bit, but overall they were very minimal! Hope this helps :)

Too late now, since it’s January and more than a year later but....you can’t wash dishes in the lake. And you should never use soap directly into the lake. The soapy water should be dumped well back into the forest where it can be filtered through the soil. Same is true of toothpaste. Spit it out back in the woods. Great videos so far. Looking forward to the rest.
@Karamintheworld
@Karamintheworld 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, thank you for the advice! We will definitely be doing that on our next trip (and wish we'd been more careful with that at the time!). This is the case when using biodegradable soaps such as campsuds and such too I presume? We tried to only use soap once a week or so if something got too greasy and otherwise just washed with water but I did not know that it must always be disposed of way back in the woods! Thanks again for watching :)
@jamesbonney6872

Yes even with the so called biodegradable soaps. They still contain chemicals that can be harmful. The thing with anything termed biodegradable organisms that will do the bio-degrading. Love the videos so far. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the trip.
@jamesbonney6872
@jamesbonney6872 3 жыл бұрын
Something got cut there. I was trying to say that in order for the soaps to biodegrade there has to be micro organisms to do the degrading. They don’t exist in the water in sufficient numbers. They are plentiful in the soils and will filter the soaps out. Just make sure it’s well back from the lake and not on rocks, into the soil. Occasionally takes a good look to find a good spot in Algonquin with all the rocky terrain.
