Also, there are many ARMYs out there creating quality and detailed documentaries focused on BTS' journey. I've never seen a bigger and more talented fandom like ARMY. Mandatory military service is a sensitive topic, every korean men is mandated to do their service before 30, due to BTS' success there has been a lot of debates on wether they should be exempted or not, the issue on having BTS' exemption is still being discussed but the decision on them delaying service has been updated, the group will be complete until 2022 (unless there would be changes on the law and exemption would be granted) no matter what decision they would let out, we as fans would support that, its great if the boys would get exempted due to their impact but it is also okay if they would serve since the boys themselves said that they would serve if called. (Please correct me if ever something on this comment is wrong, ty)

Kim Namjoon (RM) was a well known underground rapper named Raunch Randa. Min Yoongi (Suga) was also a well known rapper in the underground scene named Gloss.

They also forgot to add that Rm's stage name was changed from Rm meaning "Rapmonster" to Rm meaning "Real Me" bcoz he outgrew his first stage name. Also, he made it seem like Jimin was this special and perfect artist that Bighit specifically got for being outstanding and perfect to complete the team. When in reality, Jimin almost didn't make it to debut. He almost got removed from the group multiple times bcoz his dance skills which was contemporary dance was not what Bighit was looking for and Bts was supposed to be a hip-hop group. Jimin's dancing was too elegant. Also, they didn't add the fact that Bts originally was a hip-hop group but later changed to being a kpop group....They missed so many parts and made so many errors. It's annoying honestly

This is why I HATE this intro for RM. the way it says he completely BOTCHED it and doesnt talk about how that was an underground label and he was already an underground rapper well respected and feared. RM's intro doesnt state that he was also underground and makes him sound stupid and flakey like he can barely rap and just got in by luck - when Hitman bang stated how he was SO IMPRESSED with him. All these intro's disrespect RM and I hate the first impression it gives people. RM is the main rapper for a reason.

I completely agree with you. I've never been satisfied with the intro of RM in this. He literally started rapping in middle school. Also he says that the group feels very rag tag save for Jimin and JHope but RM and Suga were literally already established and well known rappers in the underground scene. RM being a genius lyricist at that age too and Suga already producing music. Considering the fact that the goal was initially to create a hip-hop group, those two were the ones with the most experience in the field musically speaking.

In Korea their last name comes first. Kim is their LAST NAME. Namjoon and Seokjin are their first names. Otherwise you’d be calling 70% of the population Kim 😆

Namjoon choosing Rap Monster (RM) was fitting. His rap style and word play already made him a force in underground rap where he was known as "Runch Randa". Even Yoongi, who is also present in the underground scene, said its rare to find anyone who would challenge RM because he is THAT good amongst already talented rappers. Thus, its also no wonder why RM is the youngest most credited producer by KOMCA with 130+ songs under his name. Even his songs which i hope you dwelve on in the future are so full of content you'd be surprised 🔥

Their names are listed in reverse from us in English speaking countries. So 'Kim' isn't RM or Jin's first names, but their last names. In a lot of Asian cultures, they are introduced by their last name first, then their first name. I believe it's related to the deep-rooted culture of respect toward one's family and heritage, but I'm not entirely sure. But, TDLR: Kim Nam-joon (RM), his first name is actually Namjoon. Kim Seok-jin, his first name is Seokjin. Etc.

Teaching Moment In Korea, the family name (last name) is first. So, Kim is one of the most popular last names in Korea. Kind of like Smith in the US. So, RM’s given name (first name) is Nam-Joon. You would call someone by their entire name, though, unless you were extremely close. In the US, the only time we had a draft was foe the Vietnam war. Not the world wars. Young men volunteered to join for the world wars bc they wanted to protect our country. All young men must join the selective service at 18 in case there is a draft. Korea is an extremely small country with a considerable threat to the north (North Korea). In order to fully staff the military, it takes all young men. So, there is a mandatory military service. BTS has been able to push off their service due to their contribution to the South Korean society. They have a high economic impact as well as a high cultural impact. Because of the rise in popularity of K-Pop, due largely to BTS, the Korean culture is being studied world wide. There have been significant increases in courses for teaching the Korean language, for example. I studied the impact of KPop on language in a graduate linguistics course I took.

Thank you for clarifying the mandatory military service information. This information can be found through Google and reading about both North and South Korea, which is a great history to learn. South Korea is a small country that can not rely on Voluntary military enlistment as the United States can, so it is understandable for mandatory service in order to be prepared for any type of war or invasion especially from North Korea.

Kim Tae-Young Kim is the family name, Taehyun is his given name. In Korea the family name comes first then the person's given name. Also when it says that Jungkook which is his given name was 14 when he auditioned, he was 13 in the United States or a western country. In Korea the first one to two years of your life goals like this when you're born, you're 1 year old (Because life begins at conception when the egg is fertilized, not when the baby is born) on New Year's Day you age one year so you're two years old every year after that you age one year on your birthday.

SM set up a trainee system which was used by companies to create idol groups but otherwise Big Hit is very different in the way they treat artists. And overall Big Hit have a different take on what they want for their company. To date, given the global success of BTS, many companies try to analyze and understand their success in order to recreate it but without success. Hitman Bang said it himself, the synergy of the group is incredible, he doesn't know how he did it or how to recreate it. So Big Hit is far from following YG as a role model, especially considering how they treat their bands. YG, SM, JYP are notorious for not being the best companies when it comes to treating idols properly, while Big Hit has given BTS more artistic freedom. Likewise, the members of BTS have a fairly close relationship with their boss, Hitman Bang, and since 2020 they have had shares in the company in their name which is rare in the industry.

Just to add a little bit of information on the naming convention (since I've seen a lot comment on that) A lot of countries, specifically Asian, follow the family name listed first (I think a lot of anime or Asian film fans are exposed to this but some may not realize it). Korean names in particular are (usually) 3 syllables total. The first is always family/clan name (surname in America) and the last two syllables are the given name which usually consist of a generational and then individual syllable. For example, Jungkook's name is Jeon Jung Kook (Jeon family; Jung generation; Kook individual) and his brother's name is Jeon Jung Hyun. Being that they're siblings, they have the same family name AND generational name but, of course, the individual name is different. This isn't always the case, some parents do not follow this naming convention... one that comes to mind super quickly is Chanyeol from EXO has a sister. While they obviously both share the same family name, that is all that's shared. His sister's name is Yoo Ra.

in korea, surnames were put in the first place of ur name. "Kim seokjin", kim is seokjin's last name and seokjin is his first name. "Park jimin", park is jimin's last name and jimin is his first name. "kim jennie", kim is her last name and jennie is her first name. Youre maybe confused as bts have 3 kims in their last names and jennie and jisoo from blackpinkhave it too.. actually, kim is the most common last name in korea. They have the same last names but they arent related to each other because they came from different "Kim Clans". In korea, they have different clans from their last names. Clans will let you know who's ur relative and where did you came from. So the 3 kims from bts and the 2 kims from blackpink arent related. This also applied to Park jimin from bts and Park rosé from blackpink, they also arent related cuz they didnt have the same clan but they have the same last names

Teaching moment: Actually, the majority of Kpop groups only have PROFESSIONAL relationships, which is why BTS stands out amongst all Kpop groups. They are one of the few groups who are as close as brothers in the Korean Music Industry. Please be more mindful in generalizing all Kpop with BTS. Although BTS started as a Kpop Hip Hop group, they have evolved from this title. Most of Kpop culture already know this fact. BTS is the primary group responsible for BREAKING into the western music industry for the first time (from the EAST). Because of BTS' success, Blackpink and others were able to make it big in the USA as well.

Ok I’ve been army since pre debut but your completely wrong that their closeness and ‘brother’ dynamic is rare in kpop. Sure there are a few groups who are less close but on the whole, the majority of groups who have been together as long as bangtan are just as close. Some groups like suju are arguably even closer.

Members moving on with their lives from a group that’s almost 17 years old is what most people would do, including bangtan also. Leeteuks members helped him when his father murdered his grandparents and then committed suicid*, when kyuhyun was in a coma and days from death they were there with him, leeteuk gave up his own ambulance just for kyu ffs despite having so much blood pouring down his face he was blinded and needed over 100 stitches. When heechul had his leg crushed and bit through his tongue his members helped him learn to speak again, learn to walk again. I’m not saying bts members aren’t close, but to even compare them to a group that has been through more than any other in terms of tragedy in the industry is wrong. and then laugh at me for acknowledging them is pretty low. There’s a reason they are the most successful group in Korea when it comes to longevity and consistency, they have had fist fights, they have loved and hated each other and have been through more than most newer kpop fans know. Don’t dismiss them because of some bias opinion. When you have another army having to remind you that your being too biased, I think you should maybe humble yourself.

I suppose I’m just tired of seeing army saying them and kpop are two separate entities, that they are above it in some way. Yes they’ve had huge success and sure theyre responsible for the international boom, but it’s just wrong to treat other groups as though they are ‘lesser’ in some way. RM has been very careful to emphasise the importance of things such as the Korean language and kpop culture being the soul of their work- yet many army’s want to totally separate them from kpop. That’s not what bts want at all so telling reactors that they need to ‘be more careful’ isn’t really accurate. Yes they’re more westernised than other groups but alot of army seem to look down on other groups. I’m not gonna lie, yes I was annnoyed that you think a member leaving a group on their own terms after spending more than a decade in it means somehow the members are not close?? Not all KPOP groups are tight. Most of them hate each other. As soon as their contract is up, they all go for a solo contract. Some group even promote their own solo more than the group itself.

Mr Kim Namjoon was 15 when he went to try out to have a company sign him. He was, knowing him, probably super nervous as he didn't count with his parents complete approval also. He was "just" a straight A's kid (what were you doing at 15? XD) and probably more used to clan mates and public than actually "interviewing" for a company ;) And yes, as someone mentioned: surname comes first, the honor of the family comes before the individual ^^ There is also a top 3 surname in Korea: Lee, Kim, Park. So, I don't remember statistics, but say 80% of the population there has one of those? Maybe less by now (I studied that more than a decade ago :P). Would be like Smith, Johnson and I dunno, Jones? (more surnames you've seen there, are: Jeon and Jung... Others: Choi is pretty common or Seo? Song?) The first name is then usually a compound one (if not, there'd be too many people with the same name, as stated the ambassador in a conference at school once xD): Nam-Joon, Seok-Jin, Yoon-Gi... and so on. ^^ But you guys like anime... and Japanese works exactly the same (surname+first name)... Naruto? Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke and so on? (Toriyama has special naming of characters so I didn't take Dragon Ball as example :P... but the name of the author is Toriyama Akira, you know that, right? and Akira is a super common name in Japan)

*Okay listen* Tbh NO Kpop group is on BTS level. They are the only Korean act who can sell out stadiums in the US and UK and they sold those big venues in minutes. They have mandatory military service because technically they are still at war with North Korea. (They signed an armistice agreement but the Korean war never really ended & with North Korea being so aggressive they want to be prepared) ETA: in Korea last names are 1st, so Kim Namjoon isn't Kim, it's Namjoon. Korean names have the last name first, then the first name. Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Kim Taehyung, etc... their names are Namjoon (RM), Seokjin (Jin), and Taehyung (V). I also want to note that most of the pictures you see of just some of the members are cropped. Those pictures included all of them but the person cropped them to show who they were talking about. They weren't taken along the way or before the other members joined.

Yeah its mandatory for all the abled korean men to serve in military bw the age of 18 to 28. Only the ppl who have immensely excelled in the field of music(not kpop),sports,art,etc were exempted from the service b4 2020. In 2020,jin turned 28 n was supposed to get enlisted but just few days b4 his 28th bday on 4th of dec,korean govt amended its military law...changing the serving age from 28 to 30. It was not officially stated that it was done specifically for the country's one of the most imp asset- BTS but it was pretty much clear that it was for specially for the oldest member of BTS. Many ppl argue to send all the BTS members together to the military n some even want exemption for them.(which btw has 50-50 chance). If they are exempted from the service due to their record breaking success n benefits they bring for S.korea,then it'd the first time in S.korean history that a kpop celeb(whether a grp or a soloist) is being released from this mandatory service.

Mandatory enlistment is because Korea is still in a war, it’s difficult to get exemption. If you try and dodge, society will shun you and you can go to jail. Typically men go before university, although most celebrities go when they are older. Korean names are last name, then first. Last name are categorized by family line, so although Seokjin, Namjoon and Taehyung are all Kim’s, Namjoon is from a different line and Seokjin/ Taehyung are descended from the same one (though not directly related).

As to BTS and their mandatory military service, there was recently an amendment passed last year that allows the postponement of military service for the most distinguished of K-pop stars to the age of 30 (keep in mind, Korean age 30 = 29 in western culture). There's also another partial amendment, known as the BTS Military Service Exemption Act, that's been up for discussion at a subcommittee meeting of the government’s National Defense Committee. Reportedly, if passed, the amendment could provide BTS (and any globally popular “cultural artists” who qualifies) an exemption from military service. However, as of Sept 2021, the discussion has been tabled until “the second half of the year.” The thing about BTS and their national significance is partly due to how much their global notoriety and reputation has brought a lot of positive attention to S. Korea, its culture, and that BTS brings in around $5B/yearly to the S. Korean economy. And because BTS' efforts to spread South Korean culture globally through their music over the years, in 2018, they were awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by South Korean Government (a talking point for the consideration of BTS's military exemption). More recently (2021), BTS was awarded the “Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture”, and in this capacity, they are expected to "conduct various activities to promote international cooperation for resolving global issues such as improvement of the environment, poverty and inequality and respecting diversity", while also offering a message of consolation and hope to youth worldwide (also relating to covid era difficulties). So, one can imagine why there's so much talk and consideration on the topic of whether BTS should participate in (or at the very least be allowed to postpone) their mandatory military service. This all came about because Jin - the good looking guy BigHit found on the street:) - is the eldest in the group (with Suga 3 months behind him). All BTS members recently applied for postponement of military service until each reaches the age of 30.

Kim is very common surname in Korea like Smith in US. Koreans surname comes in first and usually the whole name consists of 3 syllables. Also Koreans count age system very different too. As soon as you are born, you are 1 year old then when new year comes everyone gets 1 more year older and not on your birthday. So if Korean age is 15, then western age would be 14 or 13 (depending on your birth month).
