Stairway actually got its start with Jimmy and Robert at Bron Yr-Aur. According to Jimmy, songs of the day weren't supposed to speed up so they took a chance with this, assembling the bits and pieces Jimmy had on his own, plus Robert's lyrics, Jonesy's recorders, Hohner electric piano and bass, plus the drums that start normal before the crescendo. The instrument layering is well crafted and Jimmy took the best solo out of 3 tries and is one of the best solos in rock. There's a great story that after Bonzo had finished his drum part, he went to the control booth to listen to the playback and thought it was the "keeper" take. He looked at Jimmy, who was rubbing his chin, unconvinced; Jimmy told him that he thought Bonzo had a better take in him so Bonzo, muttering, went back and really let loose his frustration on the drums. He went back to the booth, listened, looked at Jimmy and smiled a little sheepishly because it was a better take. This is a masterful composition, full of dynamics and was a song that the entire band liked at the time.

The abstract lyrics allow the listener to interpret the song as they choose, to a great extent. Like all great "art," there is no absolute, right, one-and-only answer. That's another reason why it is timeless.

This is a song that can easily become background music since it’s been played so much and (rightly) lauded as one of the best songs ever created. But, when you sit without distraction, and let the music and lyrics wash over you and take you on the journey, it’s an experience no matter how many times you think you’ve heard it before. That’s how great Stairway is and your reaction was genuinely great to see as an old music head.

Anyone else trying to play this song, never can live up to its beauty, it’s why it’s the most played song ever. I kinda got tired of hearing it for awhile, because it is so overplayed, but I’ve grown to love it again through reactions. The live is even better, because you now know LZ, they add to it. Heart did this song at the Kennedy Center Honors, honoring LZ, & Jason Bonham plays the drums. They did the best cover, & brought tears to the guys eyes. Only tidbit I have on this, Plant was trying to finish writing it, because Page wanted record it. There’s several other very beautiful songs ahead, I’m enjoying this journey with you. FYI: there still are some, who have been dwelling in caves since birth, who haven’t or recently heard this. Yes you may have heard a little of their songs, but you’re now giving them your full attention, that’s a big difference. You haven’t been hanging hearing them over & over, then claiming a reaction. Thank you once again.

Every day I search KZbin for “Led Zeppelin reaction” and then I sort results to show the newest reactions… every day. You are in the top tier of rectors I’ve come across, no joke. The analogy comparing “stairway to heaven” to a child growing up into adulthood… brilliant. I already subbed and I’m looking forward to following you through the rest of the Led Zeppelin catalog. I actually think the last 4 albums (houses of the holy, physical graffiti, presence, in through the out door)… IMO they are better then the first 4 albums. I also love that you cover some live versions of songs from the album you have just finished, that’s a great way to do it. 👍

IMHO, Stairway to Heaven is interpreted by each person on a personal level. There is not “one” official meaning. Musically there is the Intro with Page on a six-string acoustic guitar and JPJ on the recorder (or a keyboard with that sound). Then the verses. Each verse is slightly faster than the last. Robert starts out in a gentle and expressive voice. By the fifth verse Bonham comes in with a surge. The next two verses are more bluesy. The tempo has gone from 72bpm to 86 bpm. Then you get the fanfare that leads to Jimmy’s solo. The best Rock solo ever in many musicians and fans opinions. JPJ and Bonzo give Jimmy an extraordinary rhythm section as a base. At this point the tempo has increased to 100bpm. After the solo, Robert comes in with a powerful vocal, and takes it to the summit. Finally, Robert Plant sings a cappella with great emotion. It was everything Jimmy envisioned. He broke the rule of never speeding up. It is a masterpiece for all time.

music for the rest of your life. There is a brilliant documentary called it might get loud which centres on Jimmy Page , the edge from U2 and Jack white from the white stipes . They each give their back story then get together and talk and jam together. It is my favourite piece of film making something magical happens and they have such a good time they really open up. Jimmy Page returns to Hedley Grange in his section and dicusses how they recorded led zep 4 including writing Stairway to Heaven . This is the best thing to watch to get a deeper understanding of the band he is fascinating and charming, there is nothing like hearing him tell you about it. It is available on you tube broken down into sections , you should definitely check it out whether or not you watch it yourself or react to it. When you do the live version of stairway definitely MSG 73 first , the solo sublime.

I used to listen to DJ Carol Miller's radio show "Get the Led Out" pretty often, and she would usually intro this tune with something like "Everyone knows it. But to better appreciate WHY everyone knows it, the trick is to pretend you're hearing it again for the first time." Lotta time with these reactions peeps will "hear" a "kinda familiar" song for the first time. Glad you had that goin' on today! This song AND album were in fact sort of "milestones" for the band. But speaking of growth, Plant came to tire of this song, actually.

And I think you'll enjoy album v just as much, so you have a lot to look forward to as you move along your journey through Led Zeppelin's catalog. I'm very much looking forward to watching your future reactions. :) Edit: When you do more live performances, I hope that you give their '73 Madison Square Garden performance of this song a listen.
