Also yes I agree having a teacher that is great at making the subject seem interesting. Is the best thing a teacher could have as an ability. As the main reason for why I was so interested in physic since middle school until adulthood. Is that I had a pretty great teacher in physic in middle school. Which let me to get a B in that subject

The thing with Spice and Wolf is that the author did a bunch of research into medieval economics before writing the LN. The name Spice and Wolf is even a reference to one of those books they read called Gold and Spices (or something along those lines).I think the amount of research the author did is what makes it feel so natural.

spices back then were worth their weight in gold. extremely profitable from the west indies. the dutch east india company, or something like that, was extremely rich even compared to today's greedy capitalist companies.

People nowadays tend to forget that good dialogues is what matters a lot. You can hook practically anyone with natural, interesting dialogues paired with engaging character chemistry

Holo the HUSTLER. A lot of the reception from new viewers has been identical to our experience in 2008: "wait this is about economics? MEDIEVAL economics? and I'm not bored? this is the best thing ever". Spice and Wolf didn't become a classic because of the economics, it became a classic because it's just GOOD and the audience wants to be present for each episode. The EN dub of ep1 dropped today and a few interesting things: - Same VAs as the original - They dubbed the OP, which was a surprise - The official EN [CC] captions actually namedrops the characters in the opening scene, we'll see how people feel about that - The english VAs for Lawrence and Holo are also doing the audiobooks so it is worth checking out at least one episode of the dub if you're interested in the rest of the franchise

Just like last time... The dub is already better then the sub for me. I will watch both but brinas Holo performance is really good this time.... Maybe since the character are really Familiar with the source material now after audio booking the light novels.

This episode was really awesome for an episode that is half based around the value of one currency. Like normally even shows that has elements of economic in them. Usually only have one currency in them. But here they have many and they are describe in such good ways. In why they exist how they are valued and how important they can be for a kingdom. Which really shows how much thought was put into this system. Especially with that plot point of how a currency might change its silver content. Also I really loved seeing Holo being such a good merchant. By setting up a scenario where she would increase the sell price of items by 50%. Which is really a lot for the exact same item. As I thought that she just wanted to eat a lot of apples. But that single silver coin amount of apples made them 70 new silver coins. Which is such a great investment by any meaningful measurement. Also loving Holo’s and Lawrence relationship as it keeping even more and closer🥰

You're so right! I hated math after having a terrible teacher right when it was getting difficult, and I didn't hate it by the time I started ninth grade because I had a wonderful math teacher for 7th and 8th grade. That's the best way to explain this show, and someone who loves to teach and is super passionate about it, I loved this analogy. It should be boring, but even I'm like, "tell me more, Holo" lol. Thanks for these recaps. I love them.

The chemistry between holo and lawrance is in my opinion one of the best in all anime. Especially if you take into consideration that the time it came out, female characters where just background characters for the most part in most anime. They have an amazing relationship and play off of each other so well. Ontop of that, they both bring something to the relationship without breaking the other down. This is why this story is so loved. Its not as much about the economics as it is about how these two interact and help eachother during the trades. So glad my 15 year wait is over

Spice and Wolf is yet another example of “how not what”. It’s not what is said *how* it’s said. It’s not what is shown but *how* it’s shown. I usually would fall asleep to a show that’s mostly about economics since I don’t really care about that stuff in anime (or any media for that matter), but I think because the economics are tied to the lore of the world it makes it so much easier to digest and way more interesting. This is how I got hooked on the original series and the magic is working again now.

Also one my favorite line was them talking about how strength of currency determines how strong a nation is. I am not into to coins but i think i might read somethings about silver coins their history or so . I was fan of the old version and i am so ready for the new one

The thing is that the show is good at conveying such things purely because of the characters. We follow the series because of Holo and Craft. Only a very few folks can make watching paint dry, actually interesting (like Nisioisin)

Currently doing my MSc and we have to do conservation economics and I hate it. Cute waifu wolf economics however… I’m in. Loved it back then. Loving it now. There’s another show that came out either in between Spice and Wolf or after (can’t recall) that’s based on economics as well Maoyu Yuusha

I like how show firsthand presented to us how much apples you can buy with just one silver coin and then proceeded to bargain part and you like "hell, 140 silver coins is a lotta apples, and 210 silver is even more apples!" instead of it being just numbers that don't really mean anything to the viewer.

They are high quality pelts that smell nice the trading house will sell at extra profit using the same line Holo did and do on down the trade of the pelts and making them clothing that is tough as Holo demonstrated but good looking pelts with a trace of good smell for a bit. When you puff (minor lie you can’t sue over) good merchandise the buyer will not be upset if they can pass on the value or it servers their needs well

I agree that sometimes I'll get bored if a show doesn't have some kind of good conflict, not necessarily fighting conflict, but the original Spice and Wolf was probably the first "boring" anime that I really liked all those years ago. I still feel the original is better. 🤷‍♂

I think they're basically introducing 'shorting' here - you 'borrow' the depreciating asset (10 silvers in this case) and trade it for something of stable value (another coin for example) then after it depreciates buy more of the borrowed asset, return the 10 coins and keep the difference.

Maybe. But the major point was war by economic means. By spreading the news of the currency devaluation a country might be trying to squeeze the other as explained on show. So the guy we thought running a con likely actually a part of economic spy craft. And he might actually think he’s telling the truth on a deal for him he can’t lose money on but gain profit on

To be honest, the 3rd episode is a good example of what you can expect. Give it one more just to see, but if it doesn't bite then there is nothing wrong. It's not an action based show. It's more about the interactions between the two mc's. If you enjoy their relationship and want to watch it grow with some trade plot lines in between then you will enjoy it, otherwise it's understandable that it's not for everyone.

Trying not to spoil but, see how I do. This story does a good job at points of showing the danger of economics going wrong. Therefore, there are some arcs where the suspense of bad things happening are real. Just remember what they used to do to people if they went into the negative. Even in the Victorian with debtors prison. Not saying that is what happens, just trying to kind of elude to the tension. There is other types of tension as well. Holo and Kraft are always amazing. In my opinion.

Note debit prison depended on the extended families most people had who would pay the debit. Your extended family what you were counting on to take care of you in old age. Of course no family debt prison could be a life sentence. Thus many did try never to borrow which is to some extent bad for an economy. But there was logic to debit prison and they did get the money paid back a lot of the time. Not that I recommend them they just not as bad an idea as we think now. And they did cause loans to be made which was good overall for economy.

Economics often ties into politics... Just sayin'. But yeah if you want to sell this show on people not into economics it's Holo and Lawrence. They are perfect for each other and written so well. Truly an epic romance. But don't worry, there's also politics and mysteries and some supernatural. There's even the most perfect foil for an adorable wolf girl. Did you see that girl in the opening and closing credits with the staff, the dog, and a bunch of sheep? Yep, she's a Sheppard. A young pretty girl who's actual job is to scare away wolves. Lots of fun things to look forward to with a little something sprinkled in for anyone. It's a great show cause it tells stories everyone can relate to. It's got heart

On top of that, the begin of FMA was so much better than Brotherhood and the Nina ark was done a lot better. Where Brotherhood gets better later on than FMA.

Admittedly, I haven't checked out this new version. I did attempt watching the earlier version and dropped it after 3 or 4 episodes. I don't know if I'll watch this one. Might check it out if I end up with dropping another show or in a different season with fewer interesting shows.

I think was a good episode, but it definitely felt close to 20 minutes in length to me... I liked the bartering Holo was able to do with the pelts and I'm looking forward to seeing what Lawrence has in mind to deal with the falling currency value. Hopefully people who have seen the original don't spoil what comes next.
