As a Man, I learned around 40 years ago is that if you, genuinely, laugh in the face of your adversaries you are completely taking the wind out of their sails and there is nowhere for them to go if you laugh even more than they do. They seek, as you know, to embarrass you and can't handle seeing you not affected at all. Quite the opposite in fact. I miss, as a Retired Guy, being out of the loop in the workplace as I was getting increasingly good at switching mid-argument and vehemently and passionately fighting THEIR view against mine like I would say " You are RIGHT, why should YOU have to do, surely I should have done that ?? " :( Causes dis-orientation ..lol

Not to be dismissive...I'm sorry if I sound like that .. but that's not what it is. The show is about how she wears that smug facade and laughs things away as she implodes from within. All the comedy is there to pull us in...to pull us into the tragedy that's festering underneath. But yes the series was definitely empowering ..it makes you feel like you have a friend who 'gets' it. My heart broke during the last scene in the second season when she walked away.
@omg9261
@omg9261 Жыл бұрын
Ehm... Well... It's actually the other way around. She smirks and smiles becouse she used to experience abuse a lot without properly defending herself. Empowering behaviour would be if she dealt with it - calmly calling out the abuser or stoping any communication. But to smile while being attacked is not a healthy behaviour. It's either masohistic OR passive aggresive. (I don't even know which one is her case, probably both at the same time). Which is definetely a sick and perverse reaction.

I loved her father and understand him, but I hated how he never defended Fleabag after all the things she had gone through. Like how can you be with someone that slaps your daughter, teases her about her miscarriage, constantly insults her, makes her work as a waitress in an art exhibition she was invited to, is making moves on you on your wife's funeral in front of her goddaughters, forgets you name in your wedding, etc. That's being passive to a whole other level. I love that the writer let Fleabag's father be an imperfect person. In showing us a man that failed to be there for his children after their mother had died, and diving directly into the nearest woman who'd continue to tell him what to do, we not only get glimpses of what Fleabag's mother was like without ever having "met" her, but we get some insight into what kind of people Fleabag, a woman who obviously takes after her mother, would fall in love with. The Priest is... a whole other thing related to this.

@@summerrose8110 Absolutely. The godmother was just awful. The father is equally to blame for letting that woman treat his daughters like that. What's funny is that years ago I had made a similar statue , just with slightly smaller ones if you get what I mean and since Fleabag I've come to love it for some reason haha.

You can tell an actress is doing really well when you really hate the character 😂 (Hate the character, love the actress)

I haven't watched the show yet but after that champagne scene, I had to stop what I was doing and applaud the woman.

i found phoebes real life step mom on social media and she is EXACTLY the same, referring to herself as stepmother when congratulating phoebes siblings, and also totally leaving phoebe out without any mention from any family related post ahahaa. phoebes father seems to be the same as fleabags dad, too. only difference, her mom is still alive.
