Seahawks QBs with "I before E" in the middle of their name always wear #17

I am old school Hawks fan from the UK. Dave Kreig, out of tiny Milton College, who worked his way up from 4th on the depth chart to become our starting QB for 9 years and ultimately a well deserved place in the Ring Honour. After Kreig left it took over a decade and a plethora of QB'S including three 1st round picks before we got anything resembling consistent quality production out of the QB position. When I was a kid I had his Sports Illustrated poster on my bedroom wall, so here's to Dave Kreig, aka " Mudbone" who will always be my favourite player . And by the way Jacob Green, Curt Warner and Kreig's numbers should be retired. Go Hawks

As a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, a similar controversy occured when the team signed Michael Vick, who was then just reinstated to the NFL after the dog fighting debacle, as the team's backup QB, and then, allowed him to wear No. 7. While signing Vick was sort-of controversial, the biggest controversy was his jersey number (7), which, despite the number being associated with QB Ron Jaworski (who, along with HC Dick Vermeil, got the team to their first Super Bowl appearance in the 1980 season), despite giving Vick his permission to wear No. 7, was very controversial to the point that die-hard fans demanded that the team retired No. 7 in Jaworski's honor. To this day, only three notable players since Jaworski has worn No. 7: Jeff Garcia, Vick, and Sam Bradford. Currently, Haason Reddick (outside linebacker) wears No. 7.

It'd be one thing if Freisz was a serviceable QB, but he was crap on a crap team. And yeah, Dave Krieg should be in the Hall of Fame. Only three QBs in the 1980's threw for 20,000 yards, over 169 touchdowns, and had over 57 wins as a starter. The other two were Joe Montana and Dan Marino. It's easy to forget just how good Krieg was. File this under Reason #1,000,003 to despise Ken Behring.

I remember in NFL Gameday 97 for PlayStation (based on the 1996 season) playing with the Seahawks i always traded for Dave Krieg sending to the Bears Rick Mirer (who joined to Chicago in 1997 in real life) but because you cannot change the numbers in the game Krieg got the 3 from Mirer. So i made a series of trades between both Bears and Seahawks so Krieg got the 17 and the starting spot, Friesz the 3 and the backup spot, and finally Mirer becoming a Bears QB (i wanted to keep Friesz as backup, although perfectly him could have been a Bears QB while Krieg and Mirer where in Seattle with their identified numbers)

I like Dave Krieg, as a Steelers fan, I always wished we had a guy like Krieg under center after Terry Bradshaw retired, he would’ve given us stability at the position for years to come, something Pittsburgh didn’t have in the time period between Bradshaw’s retirement and eventually drafting Ben in 2004. But unfortunately, Krieg is in the “Hall of Very Good” category. I don’t think he’s a Hall of Famer. When it comes to whether or not someone is deserving of the HOF, the best criteria is you shouldn’t have to think about it when asked “is this player a Hall of Famer?” You just know automatically. Jerry Rice, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers when he retires, you don’t have to think about it when asked if those guys are HOF’ers, you know immediately that they are. But with Krieg, you’d have to think about it first, and I think that’s gonna stop him from ever getting in.

The thing is once Dave Krieg left the Seahawks after the 91 season, the Seahawks just went down the toilet until they made a wildcard in 1999 with Mike Holmgren. They tried Rick Mirer and he wasn't it. John Kitna was a short term solution, but the real guy was Matt Hasselbeck and then getting Shaun Alexander that turned things around. Dave Krieg and Steve Largent were the offense and yeah you can Curt Warner was good in the running game, but sadly once he tore his ACL he just was never the same.
@marcus813 Жыл бұрын
Considering that Krieg was playing for the Cardinals by the time this happened, what could he really do? Also, it's not as if Friesz had worn some other number before landing in Seattle and randomly requested No. 17, which would make this situation vastly different.

I guess he sort of got a measure of revenge in '95 when the Cards beat the Hawks in OT though neither QB was good in that game (hell Rick Mirer threw two passes that were both picked, so it was QB Nightmares all around)

I don't understand why 19 would be a big deal. Yes, Johnny Unitas wore 19 with the Baltimore Colts who moved to Indianapolis and took their history with them. Was a kid during the '80s Seahawks era. He was the most bi-polar quarterback in the league, and you never knew beforehand what you were going to get. If a defense could do a decent job on holding down Curt Warner and get a pass rush (basically if they could dictate to a thoroughly average Seahawks offensive line), Krieg had a 50/50 shot of completely falling apart and posting an atrocious performance. But if the running game was decent, and protection was good enough to let him get comfortable, he could positively shred a team. League leader in touchdown passes, and fumbles. The tldr of his career is that game against the Chiefs when Derrick Thomas sacked him like 6 times, and he still managed a last second win off that throw to Skansi WHILE EVADING THOMAS AGAIN.

Except you’re missing a key contextual point. Unitas disowned the Colts after they moved to Indianapolis, and still kept a connection to Baltimore by returning there after his retirement and spending the rest of his life there.

I agree. I know that Unitas disowned the Colts after the controversial move, but the Ravens are a different franchise and haven't retired a single number as of 2023. I have no issue with Mitchell wearing the number 19 mainly because that's what he had been wearing since at least his college days at Utah. It wasn't as if he had worn some other number elsewhere before joining the Ravens and suddenly requesting the number.
