Nelson did more than most to end slavery he had a free paid black servant. He saved the world from a dictator as did Churchill he lost an eye and an arm in battle and then fought at Trafalgar . When the day comes when i have that much courage i will have the right to be critical.

Without Nelson, there is no Trafalgar. Britain does not destroy the French fleet and therefore would not be able to end the slave trade in 1807

Without the victory of Nelson in Trafalgar, the British empire would never be able to fight the slave traders. He won the seas for centuries, and thanks to that they could enforce the laws that destroyed the slavery busines

Knowing history intimately is so important to critical thinking and decision making. Wish I left school with all these details to form a full option of LN on this plinth. I’m even more convinced he should be replaced with an actual Barbadian hero. Better late than never

When he would go to the West Indes, he took slaves onto his crew as paid sailors, treated the same as everyone else. They would then be discharched as free men. He freed slaves on other occasions too. He also suggested slave plantations in the West Indes be closed and the slaves be replaced with Chinese workers.

Some of the comments are crazy, the Slave Trade Act 1807, officially An Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom prohibiting the slave trade in the British Empire did not end slavery, it was a war act which allowed the RN to interdict slavers vessels, slavery was not ended until 1833 with the Slavery Abolition Act. Slavery within the UK was unlawful so his paying a black servant was the norm, records showing payment to blacks go back to Henry VIII were his court had a black trumpeter

We poor wee mice🐭... Not one in a hundred thousand has even bothered to scatch one-inch deep to what the island is, and how historically important Nelson was integral to the very existence on this island. This last week, while we all clapped, hooted and hollered ''Barbados is finally Free of those English'' ...you never even bothered in you're wildest dreams, to even read one book of how important Nelson was, and the hell he saved this island group from But Instead, this very last week, we chanted, drummed & danced for joy for the very eradication of our very own free heritage. Read one log Nelson, as a vicar's, son, was personally appalled by the whole practice of enslavement...and sent his fleet out to capture Portuguese & Spanish Slave boats, and freed literally hundreds of the captured and condemned. Read history, and you will easily find where Lord Nelson personally advocated and supported the abolishment leaders in Haiti's slave's struggle against French oppression...to be free One history book....God Bless Barbados 🔮☮💝
