Kika and Dan , I have been working on a yard here in the Netherlands that was building GRP boats . I was building the interior and deck furniture . We used to put them level from the plate the mast foot is mounted on . I would like to point out to you that a boat is not symmetrical . The plug from what the mould of hull and deck are made is built by hand from wood . When you measure the length of the hull from bow to stern you are probably going to find a length difference up to 10 centimetres . Also the keel would not be completely 90⁰ down from the waterline . What you have been doing is likely more accurate than how they did it in the yard where the boat was built . So i wouldn't worry about it ! Good luck with the rebuild . I'll be watching !

I watch you two because you are fun and bring a smile to my face, not because you are practical. I’m a licensed Yacht’s Surveyor and owned a shipyard for over a decade. During that time, I never saw anything like the work you are doing on Uma. I’m glad you are having fun and making money, otherwise it makes no sense. FWIW we did warranty work for a few Nauticat, North Wind, Oyster and other builders. Not a single one of them were built to the accuracy you are refitting Uma. I wish you all the best and will continue to watch your channel as long as my approaching 80 year old eyes can focus on the big screen.😊

Here in Italy, yards do this to yacht all the time. It takes 4-6 month and about $100-150k to completely gut and refit a solid glass hull into what ever you want. And it will be 10X better than any new production boat sold for 3X more money. It will take us longer, since it’s just the two of us doing it. But it will cost a lot less too.

I have been handling marine insurance and liability cases all my life (soon to retire now), and you'd be surprised what shortcuts building yards take, even with large commercial cargo vessels. And, of course, these shortcuts and issues only reveal itself after the warranty period is over! Don't worry about a cm more or less away from the exact level. On larger vessels, the owner would be happy that everything is within a few dm of the original plans.

I'm so happy that KZbin creates a space for this type of content. It's even better that you guys are out there sharing your plans, your adventures, and your creations with us. Architects have a tendency to express themselves through the aesthetics of their creations. What's amazing about you two is that you are grounded both in the physical reality of a boat with a specific footprint and with the unforgiving nature of the high seas. This means that we get to see you express yourself not only through the decisions you make in transforming your boat, but we know it has to actually be useful in the real world. I've always liked it when architects are forced to be grounded in reality. Sometimes you see odd architecture that borders on impractical if the architect is not forced to live and work in his own creation. You guys will never have that issue. You guys execute your videos and your planning on a whole different level. I love the cinematography. Great music. Great camera angles. Great story-telling. Best of luck.

Hi. Sanna. Great to meet you. You're an amazingly hard worker. Kika and Dan were very lucky to have your help. I hope you enjoyed your time with them. Dan and Kika, doing a great job with Uma. You're a long way from Rocky and the Rockys, yet not too far that you forget the value of fixing what you have because it's a known value. Something new, would take years to find all the problems, if you found them before tragedy mounted it's fevered head in the midst of a raging storm, unavoidable because a flaw prevented a detour. Getting the old girl straight and true should be good for another half a knott or better. Tightening up the sides to the deck, another half or so. She'll be tight and ready to whip across the ocean like lightning. Love the level counter. Very funny. Keep yer stick on the ice, and remember, we're all pullin for yah.

Very impressive undertaking. This has been a pioneering web channel from the start on many levels. And rather than selling Uma and purchasing a replacement that doesn't need anything, you've stayed true to your pioneering roots and pressed ahead with a complete PROFESSIONAL overhaul and redesign of a proven classic sailboat. Anyone can take out a loan and buy a new boat. There isn't a lot of skill, knowledge or interesting content associated with that. Your beautifully documented journey re enforces the notion that rebuilding and repurposing older well built craft can be personally rewarding AND good for the environment at the same time. There's too much "throw away" mentality all around us. You are showing everyone that there is another, dare I say, BETTER way. Hats off to Dan and Kika!

As a person who now wears hearing aids, don't be foolish and take your hearing for granted. Wear hearing protection. I prefer the kind of hearing protection shooters wear; ear muffs. They work so much better than those orange things you squeeze together and smush into your ear canal. I also wear the kind that are attached to strings and kind of twist into your ear canal. Usually, I wet them before inserting them into my ear. you can tell when they completely seal off the ear canal. When I am done using them, for the day, I dip them in rubbing alcohol and let them hang dry. The Alcohol kills any bacteria or germs that have found their way to the ear plugs. I have been using the same pair for months now. They are as good as they were the first day I started using them. Protect your hearing. When I put in my hearing aids for the first time, I was very surprised how much I had not been heard for years. That is NOT a good thing. Alan from NC

When those boats heal to port, because of the lack of internal bunk structure on the port sire, they have some internal delamination problems, he has a fix for older boats, on the newer contessas they provide the fix from the factory. He shows the difference in the internal bunk structure between the port and starboard sides, was super interesting.

@SVHummingbird2
@SVHummingbird2 6 ай бұрын
I know it is too late for this time, however when we did refits in the shipyard the "old fashioned" way was to create what is known as a declevity level. take an old fashioned bubble level and hold it up to the known waterline get the bubble level with one end still on the waterline and measure the other end distance from the waterlline. Next you make a wedge that is that angle to tape to the level. Then when you are inside the boat you can use it to find the level you need. If there is a question about athwartship then you make a second one across the stern. This gives you what you need throughout the refit. Cheers!

useful tip regarding refit before placing bulkheads. Most kitchen appliances, counter tops, shelving, cupboards, shower units, marine electronics etc etc all have standard measurements. Even if you are aiming at a totally custom fit-out it makes sense to consider these standard measurement before placing you bulkheads. Too small and you are screwed later on but allowing too much space for fitted items results in lost storage space, or space that could have been used for other purposes but is no longer possible because there is a bulkhead in the way. You might never need a couch on a sailing boat but you will always need the extra space that can be gained by smart bulkhead layout. Looking forward to the end result.

Nothing on a boat is “standard”. Everything is custom. Every stove top we’ve seen is a different dimension. Even table and counter height barely from boat to boat built by the same manufacturer.

@@SailingUma In EU standard 4 burner stove top is 30 inches wide. You can get smaller versions and wider versions but these are not standard. Yes of course tables and counters in a boat will be varying heights but when you buy counter tops from the DIY stores in EU to build your own cabinets the standard width (front to back) is 25.5 inches wide. Shower Units also come generally in three standard sizes in EU. Go into one of the big DIY stores in the EU and all the cabinet doors are also standard sizes. If you plan on milling your own timber to make counter tops or making everything out of plywood and glassing it then obviously you can make it any size you want.

I was wondering since the motor is detachable from the dingy…in the rare situation you need to use that setup, instead of having that motor push the dingy and tow Uma, can you make a temporary or someway to attache the dingy motor to Uma. I Think you could more efficiency from that motor in that situation and less friction because it’s pushing one vessel against the water instead of two and having to stabilize two vessels. Not that that should ever occur…but it would be like being able to attach an offboard motor to Uma in the rarest of emergencies like that. Anyway appreciate all you share, I hope to see you get on the water soon.

I owned a boat building company for 20 years and I can tell you that older boats are usually not straight....the mold usually has some difference from side to side...no big deal....

Use 5100, not 5200. Most thing needed to be taken apart will be wrecked if 5200 is used. 5100 is a great sealant and parts can be removed without wrecking them. Especially with anything bedded in wood. Ask me how I know.

It is incredibly great that you are taking on the incredible job of making Uma properly "new" again...have followed you for many years...and have probably looked darkly at following you with a brand new, large catamaran... .It has been..you 3..

Could you guys take a couple of heavy duty truck jacks to do fine tuning leveling adjustments (With some wood pillar spacers to buffer and take up empty room from ground to boat)? I don't know if that would be dangerous, or too much trouble since it looks about perfect. But it might be easy to adjust it just enough with one or a few jacks, slide in some shims, and then adjust it more with the other jack/s, or use all jacks to stabilize then add shims.. I love how you're going about doing this remodel. Can't wait to see the building phases.

I love you two. That is why I'm telling you about a premonition I have. Can't polish a turd. It involves high wind and a wave that really isn't that big. You need a true bluewater boat for what you do.🌊 🤘😎

You can make any boat a “blue water” boat. We’ve already proven she can sail in any sea. Now she’ll be 100x better.

With Dan's expertise he can make this hull an ocean-going blue water boat. I'm betting it will be better than most makes that are deemed 'blue water' out there. (Island Packet, Valiant, etc)

Get yourselves a small battery powered driver or three. When I had to remove a multitude of fasteners for a job, a powered driver is the only way to go. Less tiring, frustrating, and many many times faster. Even some of the really inexpensive ones that come with a set of bits and sockets will be extremely useful. The ability to drive a fastener with one hand while holding the object with the other is fantastic.

My yacht is 6.5tons and I have no trouble adjusting it using the acrow props. To get it dead right I use my old dumpy level and that gets it near perfect. I find with a laser the further away you use the level the thickness of the beam increases and accuracy decreases.

This is so much of a project... Regarding the waterline I would do the refit, paint the hull and put the boat in the water. So you can definitely see were the line should be, take the boat out again and there you go. Obviously this is not the way to go on a cheap and quick refit but you do so much, that this won't be a big thing.

It honestly doesn’t really matter. We’re planning to paint anifoul 10-20cm above the waterline again anyway. It’s just a reference point.

Sailing Delos just announced they‘re planning for Delos 2.0 and asked for recommendations. One guy suggested to include a fire proof charging station for all the camera gear, phones, drones, etc. with Li batteries. Might be a good point for you as well. Fire prevention/extinction is important on a boat in general and should be planned in from scratch. Also use of empty conduit for electrical installation and plummeting might be useful for future upgrades/ replacements…
