There are way less death in marseille compared to american cities like chicago, because first there is way lesspeoples, second guns are way harder to come by in france, and third because the criminals mentality is different, most of the murders are kept in drug rings, basically as long as you're not selling in marseille, you're safe. The difference is the brutality of the crimes, people burned, beheaded, dismembered are quite common actually. There also are a lot more "high profile" crimes, like for example, some guys fired a rocket at the social siege of Brinks (a money conveyor company) in marseille not too long ago.

I actually have Friends who live in Marseille, one of them work at night so he goes home at 3pm. He was in his bathroom and heard noise from outside so he turned off the light ( for safty ) he looked and Seen a backhoe loader dingging and fille with corpse a hole in the garden of his neighbors. If he hadn't turned off the light i thinks that he wouldn't be of this world

Marseille gets about 40 killings a year, but has a population of about 900'000 people, so times that by 10 to get to Londons population, and its around 400, twice as violent as London is. Im from London but have also spent time in France, and I can definitely say that although London undoubtedly has rough areas, and im from North West, Marseille is definately a rougher and more violent city with way worse poverty than I have ever seen in London, Marseilles council estates have awful living conditions and are in disrepair, its a very unequal city, the main tourist bits are still rough and ready but there are still soem beautiful historic parts of the city and there is a charm to it because it isnt sanitized and wealthy like certain cities like Cambridge, Zurich, Monaco that lack an edge. Anyone who visits Marseille need to drink some Pastis and sip espresso outside one of the cafes as well, and maybe visit a Marseille football game at the Velodrome, the fans are crazy lol!
