With its cool retro look, the gleaming silver North American B-25J “MITCHELL” is a very special highlight, even in the Flying Bulls valuable collection. Built in Kansas City in 1945, it shared the good fortune of the Corsair in never having to fly off to war. Instead it was used as an electronic test platform. Later it was flown to Arizona’s Davis Air Force Base, an aircraft cemetery, to be mothballed. Apparently it was well treated there, because in the 1970s a fire-fighting firm purchased the aircraft in order to put it to work putting out fires from the air. However, it was never put to that use.
And now the aircraft enthusiasts enter the picture: in the 1980s a flying club in Kansas City bought the Mitchell, rechristening it the Fairfax Ghost. The club continue to fly the plane until 1994, when it was discovered and, after some discussion, purchased by Sigi Angerer, former chief pilot of The Flying Bulls. The collection, after all, already included the Corsair, the T-28B and the Grumman Widgeon, and a B-25 would be - at least temporarily - a new highlight.
But first there was lots of work to be done, because the Mitchell was not at all in good shape. First it got a complete overhaul in the US: it was restored and converted into a civilian version with a comfortable interior. By September 1997 the work had been completed to the point that the Mitchell was ready to undertake the flight to Europe across the North Atlantic. At the beginning of 2001, the aircraft was moved to Salzburg Airport. Now the Mitchell cuts a good figure, whether serving as a photographic model at Hangar-7 or taking part in one of the many great air shows in which it flies.

When I was a ramper at a flight school in Ontario the b25 from the Hamilton air museum would do a low'n over at the airport almost every weekend. They would tip the wings and people in the gunner spots would wave. Pretty cool being like 50 feet from the runway on the tarmac and having this plane fly over, the engines are just so sweet sounding.

My grandfather flew on them. Survived 2 crashes on them. One in Norway over a field. Hit from flak. An the second over the north sea. Fuel line issues. Hit the water at 120 mph.Killing the pilots. An almost everyone on board. My grandpa was a rear gunner. A French red cross naval vessel happened to find him floating in a raft. Crazy. Anyway My grandfather was responsible for bombing the reich bridge in Germany. Several other high value targets and infrastructure. Crippling Germany. Over a dozen missions. There's even pictures of the artillery online defending that bridge. He an those boys were only 18 when they did all that. Unbelievable

I was just at the Hamilton Air Museum yesterday, and they still have their B25, and it's flown every year. The engines were off for annual maintenance, but it will be flying again this coming June. Very impressive aircraft.

Sexy? She's got rivets! Now the mosquito is sexy! NO rivets! Smooth as Betty Grabill's legs! Don't bite my head off! Just ribbing again! That IS a sexy air frame! Can you imagine submitting a bid JUST to polish the exterior?

I absolutely love this aircraft. My grandfather, who was an amazing person, was actually a nose gunner for one of these planes. I can't recall exactly which one he flew in though.

I had three friends that owned a B-25, all silver, in FXE, Ft Lauderdale Executive airport. I think, one of them "Robby Robertson" actually flew a B- 25 in WW2. He was a 747 instructor for the airlines when I knew him in the 80s. I was promised a ride but to my dismay that never happened. :O( Another friend had an experimental Mini Hurricane. He would park under the wing of the B-25. :O) I made a complete restoration of the Baby Ace in my thumb nail LOL.

A couple of years ago I went hiking in the alps near Salzburg and when I reached a summit, this very plane flew right over me in a distance of about 100 m and wagged it’s wings! Unforgettable experience- thanks very much!

My father was a radio operator in a B25. When he left the service he continued his electrical education and became an electrician. Dad introduced me to electronics and I got a degree in Electrical Engineering. I have claimed the B25 was responsible for me becoming an engineer.

Beautiful warbird! Imagine sixteen of these taking off from the flight deck of the USS Hornet on their way to raid Tokyo! Led by Col. Doolittle, who said, and believed "it could be done"! And he did it. April 1942.

i remember in the 90s being at an airshow with my dad. we saw a dutch owned north american b25 mitchell bomber fly in a steep tight banked turn. my dad can that b25 do that? oh yes, you are seeing it. also most disturbing is this true story i read and saw the photo. this is fully aerobatic. superb plane. a drunken pilot stole 1 in canada in world war2. theres a photo of a p40 warhawk tailing the b25 over a canadian townscape of houses etc under 100 feet. very low. if he went over the usa border he was to be splashed. he had no radio on. and flew for over 5 hours before running out of gas. he crashed in a river and died. ill try to find the pic. i can only imagine what acrobatics the guy flew.

I think it looks cooler with that shiny skin. I already saw it in real life. We live next to the airport where it is stationed so i hear it somethimes fly over our house, and it is often in the Hangar-7, where you can see it from like 1m away.

I agree they should give it some of the squadron paints on the tail fins or something instead of just the plain shiny paint it doesn’t look that great. They should also put replica machine guns on the b-25.
