I was just a kid when the Colonia Dignidad stuff started coming out in the news, and it was always presented as a disjointed rabbit hole of stuff that happened, I could never catch on or keep up with the facts. I know that untying knots with a fork, or at least using a fork tine to loosen up the knot, is an old trick. These would have been old-fashioned shoelaces, probably made of a purely plant-based material, not synthetic like we have now, so maybe it was just the way he learned to do it from schoolmates or something.

There are lots. I’ve personally encountered a number of cults in my travels around the US. Many are in rural areas, but those are fairly easy to detect if they live in a community or all on a cordoned off piece of land. Much harder to detect are cults in buildings in cities or in suburban houses. In the 1980’s I lived about two miles from a nudist cult in rural northern NY. NYC is chock full of them. I visited one once by accident. It was on Staten Island in an old house. They financed themselves in part by operating a thrift/gift shop. I went in looking for a certain item and struck up a conversation with the clerk on the register. She seemed a little off, but it was NYC after all. Then some man came in and he was obviously high on something. I requested to use the restroom which was located in a hallway attached to the house. I couldn’t help but get a peek into the living room where at least 20 people all dressed similarly to the two in the shop were engaging in activities I can’t mention on KZbin. Let’s just say I finished up my business and took myself out of there in a hurry. Maybe eight or so years after my visit, the place made the news because of a murder. I don’t recall the name, but some old woman had a whole bunch of mostly young professional people working in the city by day and handing over their money and control of their lives to her. She had other full time residential people who never left the property and wore bizarre clothing. Naturally, the people worshipped her like a god and sex was involved.

I watched a movie review video yesterday of a film that was made centred about this place. There's a girl (i think Mariah) that escaped and started making her own safe haven. During the film there is a regular reference made to 'the Wolf' that's presented as an eye on a wall and actually refers to Schaefer who beckons her to come back. She adopted 2 pigs and made them change to fit her ideals and as the movie progresses, you realise that Mariah and Schaefer seem similar. In the end her children wanted to eat her and she called Schaefer to rescue her. At that point in the movie the 'wolf' was represented by a painting of a Sherman Shephard. The movie took 5 years to make and is a constant change in art style. The figures will change between 2D and 3D, and then morph into entirely new shapes. It creates unease because nothing is static and it's constantly changing which fits the theme perfectly.

I almost bought a pistol that was claimed to have been made at Colonia. It was a cal .32 and had no makers markings on it that I can recall it was just blank with a natural / no finish on it.

Colonia has always fascinated me, nobody knows the name and story ,even the recent 'Film' hardly touched the reality ... everyone knows Jim Jones but apart from how that ended 'colonia' and Schaefers' grubby goings on were far more insane
