I'm Argentine, there are a couple of hints, of things they say that are very "Argentinian", that make no sense translated. Embichado is a very "country" word for "has some sickness", it's used intechangebly with "rotten" which is more understandable for other audiences. Also the cops say, and this was not translated "those things don't happen here, we are at the ass of the world, which is a frase we used for REALLY far hard to reach. Also someone says "those things only happen in big cities" which the version I watched also didn't translate, and then there's a bit of classism that get's lost in translation, and Ruiz says that he believes "the state" dropped the rotten in his land on porpouse. I hoped I helped, English is not my first language. To me the victims are the children. They are powerless, but get the upper hand in the end.

About the rules you mentioned: In the movie, evil doesn't care about the rules. It is the most common confusion about this film. People believe or talk about some "rules", but they only have their own beliefs. The people in the movie operate by their own rules, fears, and needs. The "rules" are a trap. Evil operates according to its own agenda. The movie establishes that there are no real rules. Evil doesn't care about rules. He uses one of the young men to murder the "cleaner" which indicates that no one really knows what the "rules" are. Nobody can imagine that. In Argentina this way of thinking is very common. There are too many "rules" but they are only based on tradition. The protagonists are imperfect, ignorant, afraid, violent and make bad decisions all the time. Even in their daily lives.

Yes exactly! Which is why I thought Ruiz's decision made sense. He is established as the type of character who would do what he thinks is needed over what is right. He sees his animal is infected and thinks, "I should have shot the man in the first place, but I didn't and look what happened". So he shoots the goat because he was right, and he should have never listened and showed restraint in the first place. I think the guy leaves his clothes on the ground because he is distracted by his wife and her husband and he doesn't know all the "rules". They live on farms, and no one ever seemed worried about it spreading to animals before the goat and dog scenes.

Dude, what? Not following rules isn't strictly an Argentinian thing, every country has that mindset. There are rules in the story of the film and the fact that one of the characters knows them and has dealt with the Rotten in the past disproves this take. Pedro's action are a result of his instability and toxic behavior that got him a restraining order in the first place. The boy killing the Cleaner doesn't break any rules, it's the same as the wife being possessed and killing her husband with the axe. It's bewildering to see people defend this writing.

Ppl misinterpret this movie a lot and I think it’s a cultural thing. A factor of fear in this movie is the ignorance, fear and anger of people against evil. They break “rules” because they are cornered and desperate for it to end to the point they think they could take it into their own hands. Like when ppl self medicate and make stuff worse

Also this movie needs you to remember for these ppl this is real life. Like, Pedro letting the dog sniff. He has a bit of knowledge of the infection but he truly doesn’t know how it works. @@RocklinGraves No worries, discussing a film is great. My take is that Ruiz wants to kill the goat (and Uriel) because he doesn't believe in the “myth”, he’s mostly afraid of losing his wealth. However, the incident with the goat and his wife begging him not to kill it made him change his mind and actually starts to believe (for a split second) that's why he doesn't shoot. The devil knows that, that's why it makes the goat walk towards the barrel and jumpscare Ruiz by bleating causing the accidental shooting. Ruiz realizes what just happened a little too late because now his wife is possessed just as Uriel promised.

The thing about this movie and the "rules" is that, are they really rules that should be followed or things that people tried and just kept on passing on bc they "worked". They seem to not all know how the infection spreads or how far the Evil can influence things and people to spread it around it more and more. So, they think they have a set of rules just because thats what they learned to do. Some of these rules are real, pretty much bc of the consequences we see happen after they dont follow them, but we dont know how many of them are just coincidences. Also, the human way of doing things, also a cultural approach on how we do things and how we make decisions based on our own feelings and experiences, its that... Sometimes we dont know what to do, but we do what we think would be the best thing to do, justified by something going wrong just before that, bc we didnt make that same decision before that bad outcome happened.

Director Demian Rugna has a way of making movies. The evil in his films is absolute, powerful. Evil does not care about the protagonists or the spectators. Evil does not care or take note of what we believe. In these types of movies, no one really knows what evil is capable of. Evil is a train that comes towards us without any respect or consideration. We and the protagonists are simply worms who do not deserve your attention. It's like a bunch of insects trying to figure out a construction crew that's destroying their habitat. The evil is the construction crew and we are the insects. This is how Rugna writes. There is no hope, there is no way out, there is no answer or cause that we can understand.

We need more horror films like this. In regards to the decisions the characters make, although frustrating, it matches the character's personalities. Pedro is a stubborn and emotional person. He lets his emotions overtake him, causing him to react impulsively and recklessly. I think that was the whole point of his character. His refusal to evaluate his feelings led to all his loved ones dying. Ultimately, he has to live with the consequences of his bad decisions. That's just my opinion. I feel like the character's decisions were based on their character foibles. I’d rather have more of these movies, even if the characters make bad decisions based on their character traits, than movies like Halloween Kills, where characters act stupid because of the script.

Some of the people in this either aren't entirely certain if they believe everything they're told about it, and I think some just don't want to believe. People are irrational and emotional when under stress, and this story amplifies that. I also have suspicions that the man who shot the possessed goat was suicidal, for whatever it's worth.

I think the big thing with the characters doing stupid decisions isn’t just cus they are stupid and need to move the plot. It’s more so they are scared, realistically defenseless as they know they don’t likely have the tools or knowledge to perform the basically exorcism ritual. Their police won’t help and they just have to live with this growing fear that they know will spread. It makes sense their logical reaction would be to snap and shoot it as it’s the only option they know to confront a threat. The clothes I give you credit that was stupid but think also was just a heat of the moment everyone shouting no one realizing what’s going on till too late.

I haven't seen this yet, so thanks for the heads up! Will def check it out. That said, that horror screenwriters so frequently and dutifully rely on the scripted stupidity of the characters in order to get them from point A to B, or to advance the story, is something that plagues numerous movies these days, and is something that often results in my refusal to finish watching a movie, it's _that_ irksome ...and I have a sociological theory as to why this has become par for the course, and why audiences have come to accept it, or seemingly don't take issue with it ....but that's another post altogether, ha. Simply put, I don't subscribe to the idea that horror stories MUST rely on the blatantly illogical actions/inactions of its characters in order for them to find their way into or out of a perilous scenario. That's just lazy writing.

The stupidity of the characters ruined this movie for me. The only way I could redeem it at all was to read it as a COVID allegory, for the reasons you hinted at near the start of the video, but even that doesn’t work because it’s not like these characters distrust the information they’re getting - they believe it, they just get distracted and do exactly the opposite for no reason. And because every significant moment is preceded by intense stupidity, I couldn’t enjoy those moments. I was too distracted yelling “Dude, get your head in the game!!” Like, compare to Oculus where the threat is much trickier, the characters have far less info available, and they are still FAR smarter about how they deal with it.

I thought this movie was good, small g. I especially liked how the universe of the film accepts the existence of the rottens; no time is wasted, like in nearly every other horror movie, on authority figures expressing skepticism. No, the rottens are real, and all the characters accept them as real, period. Only thing I didn’t like was (as you pointed out) that characters don’t seem to accept the rules of the narrative- also, if these things were real and accepted, they would almost be considered less than frightening and more like nuisances, like roaches. “Hey Miguel, you hear about Julito?” “Santiago’s kid? Yeah, he went rotten. What a shame.”

I am a bit conflicted with this one. There are so many things and ideas that are almost perfect, but I ended up being very frustrated. Good things first: The concept of this Movie is very interesting and has a lot of potential. The Cinematography is very good and has many fresh ideas. Now the bad things: It had some gore in it but nothing as dramatic as I was led to believe and I was actually disappointed about that as well. (Talk To Me execuded the gore so much better and was way more terrifying!) There are soo many moments where I was actually screaming at the screen because the characters did some of the most dumb and almost brainless decisions that nobody else would do. The ending didn't work for me at all because of those decisions. I don't need a happy ending (especially in a horror flick) but it has to be surprising or clever one. This one just made me angry, and I almost started laughing.

It's been a while since this has been uploaded, but I thought I'd try to be the advocate for those who made obviously poor decisions. None of the problems they are/were facing were introduced by the Rotten, they've existed and festered for these character's lives, and are now being brought to light by the Rotten. In their everyday lives, they can try to forget - because all are characterized as weak whether they acknowledge it or not - but they can no longer do so. All actions in this film strike me as actions made by people who think they would not have the will to continue their lives - or if they do, they would find the change devastating - and who lash out in hopeless defiance. Only after they are given the chance to endure thejr consequences do they learn that they underestimated their will to continue through the storm. If they strike out hopelessly, they are defiant in defeat (in the short-term through their eyes), then they have nothing left to lose. A loss on their terms, you could say. They're wrong and that's the tragedy (and where the film becomes profound). I think the film strives in painting the picture where these obviously poor decisions seem like their made by people who knew they were short-sighted, selfish, and weak-willed. They offer moments where the audience doesn't have a complete picture, and they have to make inferences, but it is the real focus of the film rather than the demon itself - who only highlights the characters.

With regards to people following the rules and how doing all of the right things and still losing would be more impactful, I do still think this film does things well. However (to draw from a completely different style of media), I definitely still agree most of the time with your point, and it's the reason one of Ardbert's lines from FFXIV hits so hard for me: "We did everything right, everything that was asked of us, and still...still, it came to this."

My take on the fact that almost every character disregards the rules is that they’re all basically panicking. It’s easy to remember protocol when you don’t actively need to follow it. Also, most of the characters seem to suffer from chronic protagonist syndrome, where they think they’re somehow exempt from the laws of the world they’re in, and they all pay dearly for it.

Keep in mind, "The Rules" were created in a different time. At the time of the movie, the cleaners were in hiding (and being hunted). So, rotten were a known uncommon occurrence. The protagonists were already shown to be human (not perfect). There was an emphasis that "they thought" they saw a rotten, all the other people would always come back with "You'd know it if you saw one". Neither protagonist had the self-esteem or confidence to make the call. Denial looks all kinds of ways.

Its been said a lot in the comments and I agree that part of the point was what if this happened to a person who wasn't capable of being rational and making good decisions. You alluded to it yourself that a scary amount of people couldn't follow simple protocols when it came to the recent pandemic. And the reason in real life is probably the same reason in the movie why people didnt listen to health officials- they didnt believe the sickness was that serious, they thought it was a conspiracy theory made up by someone in power for some reason -in the movie the farm owner says it could be a rumor being spread so his land loses its value and can be bought from him for a cheap price and in real life..idk i guess some people thought COVID was made up to make trump look bad. Or even if people did think the sickness was real they didnt believe the suggested measures would work- like the mask debate in real life and in the movie the grandmother sings the song about the rules but says it wasnt real so that put doubt in their heads that they didnt have to adhere to the rules. And finally all of that plus sometimes people are just irrational, prideful, impatient, not intelligent, just a ton of reasons some people just dont listen.

I really liked this one until one weakness became too glaring to go unnoticed the closer we got to the end. As things inched toward a climax, Pedro consistently had to be just stupid enough to keep the story going. The nonsensical stage-axe thing at the end is what really got me flashing back, realizing how much of this never could have proceeded if Pedro didn't always make the wrong choice or do something that was just profoundly stupid.

This movie feels ominous and dark, which carries it through all the stupid decisions of its characters. One thing I didn’t like is how unclear the rules are and after they spell the rules out loud they come up with new stuff about mental illness and how to kill them, so how many rules are there then? Also, it’s very hard for me to believe that this is a regular occurrence and that this doesn’t end the world right away because the speed at which it spreads or kills people would be impossible to handle. A lot of people were frustrated at this movie which is totally understandable, very valid to not enjoy a movie where the protagonists are not smart in the situation they’re in and do things wrong. But I really think it isn’t bad writing or a fault with the movie. Not everyone can turn into Rick Grimes or [insert badass male character here] when shit goes down. Most people wouldn’t, most people would be scared and make really bad decisions. Also something I got from this movie is how men can think they’re right about a situation despite evidence otherwise. They refuse to listen to the women in the movie when the women know more than them. I’m thinking about this especially with the autistic son, the father takes him without bringing any diapers which the boy needs or his medication. By trying to protect him he’s putting the boy in a more uncomfortable dangerous situation. As someone who’s autistic that storyline made me sad, so many disabled people get neglected irl. I don’t have an issue with that character’s inclusion though. The creator was inspired by pesticides making kids sick and it being ignored if I remember correctly. So the amount of times children, especially a disabled child, are just ignored and put in danger is fitting.

I feel like this movie is agaunst vigilantee justice. The people know the correct procedures to deal with bastards, but their emotions get the better of them, and they deal with them on their own, leading to disasterous consequences

I saw a review somewhere that said something like "the men in this movie are so redneck that they'd rather die than listen to women". But who knows, maybe Pedro was possessed or influenced from the start

About the rules, my take is that the goat bleating just plain startled him and he accidentally shot. That let the demon into his wife, and well, you saw the result of that.

I’m not sure honestly. The question still stands about why he grabbed the gun in the first place, and I think her murder-suicide was just her being pissed at Ruiz and knowing what awaited her. She had the axe and was threatening him before he shot the goat
@plectrumura Жыл бұрын
@@RocklinGraves My read is that she wanted him to use the axe on the goat since it was only firearms that were explicitly against the rules (then again, it also said not to hurt them, which is…odd, but there are several translation issues in the subtitles so who the heck knows knows?) Great channel btw. This is a really high quality video.

its one of the few movies where characters making 'dumb decisions' really didnt bother me at all. it seems the 'rules' are mostly a story from old timers, and the 'evil' something that happened to your friend's friend's cousin that one time. its also pretty clear it picked on these people specifically because of their poor impulse control and judgement, both ruiz and pedro, especially. it feels like real life and real people, who are often very dumb (as we saw with the 'rona). 'wash your hands & wear a mask' are not hard rules to follow.........and yet.
@RocklinGraves5 ай бұрын
I get that, but my issue is that I didn't feel like there was any contrast between people making good and bad decisions that would've helped to make it clear that this was an intentionally narrative decision and not just bad writing
@CallMeConstantine6 ай бұрын
After the Pandemic, and all of the consistently terrible decisions people made (on all asides of the political/ideological aisle) I am not AT ALL surprised by the decisions of folks when the right choice is obvious. This flick captures a lot of regret and bad mistakes, not just in the moment, but from the past. And…I legitimately don’t think many people would act differently in the same circumstances.

I find the "breaking the rules" issue much more believable in this film because of today's culture. How often has someone said to not do something, it's bad for your soul, and then people immediately disregard them because of that? The world is so far into science and man's iron grip on things that hearing about something spiritual is automatically ignored. What seems more feasible; beating in the head of what has been established as the source of the evil, or going through a bunch of rules and specialists to get rid of it? Most people would immediately bash in his head, even if they're told otherwise because it's all we know or have been taught to believe. EDIT: Now to clarify, I think it was poorly executed in this film, but imagine if a horror film went that route properly. Ignorance is what causes the end of the characters, because they refuse to accept something so alien to their society/ education.

I like the idea, but the issue is that every character acts like this. There needs to be that clear contrast in order for that angle to actually work

Soooo... you don't buy working class people taking decisions against their own direct self-interest in scenarios where the correct information is easily accessed and was valuable to previous generations? Hmmm... OK, how about genre-fans obsessively decrying tropes that, after the society-wide embrace of a new communications technology suddenly rockets them into position as de-facto taste-makers, suddenly become near-taboo, only to be recognized, finally, as valuable creative tools too quickly placed out of reach by, irony of ironies, the genres most dedicated fanbase? Nah, I get ya, but I'd like to see my proceeding points given some consideration on-screen so everybody can stop acting so g'dammed surprised about these outcomes all the time. This film should have developed more, er, connective tissue that would help genre-fans and general audiences-alike appreciate this dynamic - because I believe it to be long overdue at this stage. With genre-fan opinions so over-represented in early internet iterations it became an involuntary response to transpose these deep-geek opinions and criticisms onto the general audience-driven internet of right now. Only after the fact have we gained any perspective that criticism is shaped as much by the critic as it is the work in question. Another one of those obvious things that when spoken aloud, you almost cannot believe our species has a massive blind-spot for.

You're the only person I've seen thus far not defend the bad character writing. There ARE rules and they choose to ignore them CONSTANTLY. I reached a point where I stopped caring about the characters and actively began rooting for everyone to die so that the movie could end. The gore and shock value - in 2024' was not eniugh to keep me engaged.

Im not argentinian, Im from México, however I find really funny that your biggest issue with the movie is a very latinos thing, which is a impulsiveness of acting against really well established rules thinking it might work out anyway. Maybe thats part of the charm of the movie at least for the latinos audience, knowing that not give a fuck about the rules is what often puts us in hairy situations

People knew during the pandemic hiw was the right way to act, and a lot of people did the opposite, to apiint of risking their own and other people's lives... So i wouldn't be so harsh on the characters of the movie when they fucked up due to fear and desperation. I think that was the tragedy underneath the movie, that all characters had good intentions and that was what it drove them to failure over and over.
@RocklinGraves Жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, but honestly that doesn’t work for me because the people making the bad decisions in this movie believed in the possessed ones. It wasn’t a counter culture move or anything, it just felt contrived to me. I’ve also got no issue with characters making bad decisions under pressure but when it’s so consistent and so blatant I have a harder time with it
