Bigger soldiers, smaller ones, etc. feared him. He decongested the port of Lagos in few days that he took over. Nobody messed with The Black Scorpion. Tafawa Balewa, who wasn't a soldier was tagged "the golden tongue of Nigeria." Oh my, just hear him over the radio in those days. You can still find Balewa on KZbin and listen to him. @@SundayAshiedu Unity is for those who identify as Nigerians. The idea of Biafra, as clung to by many, may never materialize. It's important to note that I have lost relatives from both my parents' sides, who are from the western and eastern regions of the country during the civil war. The Igbo people are diverse and not a single entity; a separation now could lead to further divisions into smaller groups. It's crucial to consider this perspective. I share Igbo heritage, so this is not a baseless argument. Your hatred for other Nigerians outside of your tribal enslavement is not the solution to Nigeria's problems. 99% of the world today has numerous ethnic groups forming their countries. Most of the successful Igbos achieved success in other parts of the nation. Stop fanning the flames of disunity as it will get you nowhere.

And, let those who does not identify themselves as Nigerians that wants to leave leave for peace to reign. Why would anyone in their right mind would want to live with someone that does not want to live with them. Coexistence is not by force anywhere in the world but only in Nigeria or Africa. What on earth are you guys talking about here? This was the reason he was dismissed as GOC by Mr. Gowon. For example out of the 5500 strong brigade he sent into Owerri in 1968 less than 270 made it out alive. Adekunle was actually dismissed from the Nigerian army dishonorably for drug dealing. They haven't told you that for that for the first time in the history of war, Red Cross planes were wilfully shot down and crew members killed with no consequences. There are accounts of the atrocities cimmitted by the invading Biafran forces in parts of Edo state, then Bendel, when they took those places. The tragedy of a single narrative indeed. You said younger officers led a flamboyant lifestyle, and he led a pitiable life. You see how we are our problem. Did it ever bother you to ask how those younger officers became wealthy and subsequently rose to power?

Tay, This was a good video as I'm unfamiliar regarding the details of this war. I do however have one question and a critique, at 1:24 problematic you showed a eurocentric image of Hannibal Barca. My question is if Gen. Benjamin Adekunle was considered a military genius, can you provide any pacific details regarding battles he led or participate in?
@Taythestoryteller6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Glenn Peterson. The whole point of my videos is to create more interest in Nigerian military history so that my viewers can do more research, acquaint themselves with history and come up with their own conclusions. However to answer your question, Brigadier Adekunle played a critical role in ending the Nigerian civil war (1967-1970) as commander of the 3rd marine commando. His exploits in that war is what brought him national notoriety and there is a lot of good literature that covers the Nigerian civil war in detail. I also have a few videos on my channel that touches on the civil war so feel free to go through the channel and enjoy your viewing

I am aware that Adekunle's son published a biography on his father but the book has been out of circulation for years. As you may have noticed from the comments generated by this video, Adekunle was a polarizing figure considered a war hero by some and a villain by others. There is an abundance of literature about the Nigerian civil war especially from people who actively took part. Accounts of Adekunle will depend largely on the affiliation of the author at the time of the civil war.

When aguiyi ironsi sacked the yoruba man who was the senior most judge of the country and a junior igbo man was unilaterally promoted, and despite the clamour of the all other ethnic groups on nigeria then, aguiyi Ironsi claimed it was a decision of government. He was overated; and that is why he ended up in penury and squalor after being abandoned by the Nigerian state and all those who used him! I do not see any real military exploits from him other than the battle in the Rivers creeks and the killing of civilians, dogs, trees, or anything that moves, or does not move! I don't need to know you, to figure out your poor understanding of a subject that virtually defines my own birth and existence. You must know a lot about the Asaba Massacre. You are correct about Col Ibrahim Taiwo leading the line at Asaba. You managed to create an argument that wasn't the issue in the first place. More like pulling another into your gutter to win them cheaply. Black Scorpion and the 3rd Marine Commandos had no business with Asaba. Even for an illiterate, merely hearing the word MARINES, common-sense should suggest to you that Adekunle operated more in the riverine fronts of the war which includes Akwa Ibom. If you understand the Geography you will know that Asaba is on the Westend of Biafra, whilst Akwaibom is on the extreme East. Same as Lagos and Maiduguri. There is no meeting point between the two. The contention here was Adekunle's highhanded activities in Uyo, Akwa ibom, which was a major part of Biafra throughout the war period. You threw in Asaba like an educated illiterate just to disprove the point raised by @eduokuwah5328. Meanwhile emphasizing that Akwa Ibom is not part of the SE only buttresses my position that you have no clues and lack adequate education on this particular subject. There was nothing like SS and SE then. The Nigerian British govt of Gowon created states ONLY to thwart the Biafran idea, including your SW states. Akwa Ibom of today was part and parcel of Biafra during the war. Same as Ogun or Oyo of today were part of the Western region before they became individual states. The origin of the state creation you see in Nigeria today started from the attempt to neutralize Biafra via creating these divisions to cut away the oil reserves from Ojukwu's strangle hold. To keep the balance and make it look sincere, they had to create states too in other regions. What you had was just one big Western region, same as we had one big Eastern region which became Biafra. Moreover, Ojukwu's second in command General Philip Effiong who oversaw the surrender terms, is from the Akwa Ibom area. Stop arguing about something you are clueless about. You write eloquently but have no clues about the Biafran region during the war.

@@jamesentonu984 Nope! Major Adewale Ademoyega is one out of the many Yoruba guys who participated in the "Ibo" coup. He was imprisoned by General Ironsi but ended in Biafra during the war. Adekunle was in Nigeria throughout the war. When the Organization of African Unity today's African Union) pretended to be holding peace talks Adekunle mocked the initials O.A.U. by announcing a bold operation against us code named Operation O.A.U. during which he boasted that he will capture Owerri, Aba, Umuahia. That turned out to be a disaster as we whittled down his entire 3rd Division from a strength of about 50,000 down to a mere 11, 000 or less in less than one years. That sealed his career as a division commander as Mr. Gowon was displeased with his performance. I mean, Adekunle sent too many young men to their early grave. I was active in Owerri at this time and I am sure that the people of Owerri are still finding skeletal remains there. We completely cut them off from their supplies and when they went to the Otamiri river to fetch some water our snipers sprung into action. When the bloody Egyptian towelhead pilots attempted an airdrop, we opened up on them with the few anti-aircraft guns in our possession. These pilots ,not wanting to die in an African war, would deliver their payload within territory held by us. That was how we sustained the war for a while. When Obasanjo took over from Adekunle, he said that troops in his 3rd Division regularly shot themselves in the hand or leg to avoid facing Biafran bullets. Read his book. We eventually also got to Obasanjo when we shot him at close range. A lucky man he is. I don't want to say more now. JUST LET IT GO GUYS.

Nigeria still betrayed him shortly. In his mind at old age he must have regretted his roles in the Nigerian army. He was very outspoken, so his colleagues undermined him after the war. Gowon, Obasanjo and co.

I used to see him taking fresh air and looking at the horizon from his balcony while returning from pry school in Surulere during my younger days (mid-70s). He was both enigmatic and mythical to me.

My office and home was around his 3-4 story building with a balcony. He was a military genius who forced Yorubas to enlist in large numbers at the outset of the civil war.
