I grew up in an Italian family. Salad as a first course was only olive oil and red wine vinegar. Pasta was 2 ounces per person as a first course. Then came meat and vegetables. Fresh fruit was served at the end of the meal along with some nuts.

In my youth, I dated an Italian boy; when his mom made dinner, she'd use the gravy from the main-course meat as the salsa for the small spaghetti entree. It taught me to savour the gravy as a stand-alone, not just as an accompaniment to the main course. The family never rushed their evening meal.

My daughter's kitten was going CRAZY wanting more and more and more food. No matter how much she was feeding him this kitten was still crying for more food. I looked at the ingredients on the raw diet she was giving him and saw that they had not been supplementing it with any of the common vitamins in commercial feed. I bought him supplemented feed, suddenly he's calm and not eating everything in sight! Amazing how nutrient deficiencies make us overeat!! 😓

Please do a follow up video on what exactly you would eat to lose weight on the Mediterranean diet. Also, would like a video on calorie restriction and slowing metabolism. If your metabolism slows down when restricting calories, what is the next step for someone losing weight? Would it be to continue lowering calories? Wouldn’t you eventually lower them to the point of not eating much at all and risk becoming nutrient deficient?

**Key Takeaways:** 1. **Carbohydrate Overconsumption in the U.S. vs. the Mediterranean Diet:** - Thomas DeLauer emphasizes that overconsumption of carbohydrates is a major issue in the U.S., contrasting this with the Mediterranean diet, which promotes better longevity, body composition, and muscle quality. - The problem in the U.S. is a misunderstanding of the Mediterranean diet, often associated with pasta and other refined carbs, which are not the main focus of the true Mediterranean diet. 2. **Western Diet vs. Mediterranean Diet Study (Monkeys):** - A study involving monkeys placed on either a Western or Mediterranean diet for over two years showed that the Western diet led to insulin resistance and central fat accumulation. - Despite having the same macronutrient breakdown, the Mediterranean diet produced better results due to its higher content of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, whereas the Western diet, rich in saturated fats, triggered overeating. 3. **Combining Saturated Fats and Sugars:** - DeLauer explains that the combination of saturated fats and sugars leads to overeating (hyperphagia). In contrast, the combination of sugars with mono- or polyunsaturated fats, as found in the Mediterranean diet, does not cause the same overeating effect. 4. **Human Studies on Mediterranean vs. Ketogenic Low-Carb Diets:** - A human study comparing a low-carb Mediterranean diet with a very low-carb ketogenic diet found that the Mediterranean diet led to better outcomes, despite having slightly more carbohydrates. This was attributed to the Mediterranean diet's higher fiber, polyphenols, and better fat composition. 5. **Microbiome Diversity and Mediterranean Diet:** - A meta-analysis of 37 studies revealed that adherence to the Mediterranean diet increased microbiome diversity, especially beneficial bacteria like Bacteroides, which are linked to better metabolism and body composition. This contributes to lower fat mass, improved insulin resistance, and overall health. 6. **Resveratrol and Mitochondrial Biogenesis:** - Resveratrol, a compound found in the Mediterranean diet, was shown to enhance mitochondrial function and increase the number of mitochondria, boosting fat burning. Other compounds in the diet, such as Urolithin A (from pomegranates), also contribute to mitochondrial efficiency. 7. **GLP-1 Effect and Appetite Regulation:** - A study demonstrated that participants on a hypocaloric Mediterranean diet experienced an increase in GLP-1, a hormone that suppresses appetite, despite signals of hunger. This unique balance allows for sustained fat burning while preventing overeating. 8. **Impact of Inflammation on Fat Loss:** - Chronic inflammation interferes with insulin signaling and fat loss by creating a state of "energy toxicity." The Mediterranean diet, especially rich in polyphenols, has been shown to reduce inflammation, thereby improving fat loss and metabolic health. 9. **Nutrient Density Over Caloric Restriction:** - DeLauer highlights that the nutrient quality of the Mediterranean diet reduces the desire to overeat, supporting fat loss not just through caloric restriction but through improved metabolic function. 10. **Mediterranean Diet and Sleep:** - Individuals adhering to the Mediterranean diet reported better sleep quality and reduced daytime fatigue. While this could be influenced by other healthy lifestyle factors, the diet's nutrient density is likely a key contributor to these benefits. 11. **Practical Implementation of the Mediterranean Diet:** - DeLauer suggests a Mediterranean diet rich in lean proteins (like fish and poultry), mono- and polyunsaturated fats (like olive oil), and a moderate amount of whole grains. He advises cutting refined carbs and saturated fats while focusing on nutrient-dense, whole foods. **Conclusion:** The Mediterranean diet, when properly followed, stands out as one of the most effective diets for fat loss based on both animal and human studies. Its success lies in its balance of healthy fats, fiber, polyphenols, and low levels of refined carbohydrates, which collectively improve insulin sensitivity, enhance mitochondrial function, reduce inflammation, and support better body composition. Furthermore, its nutrient density promotes satiety, reduces overeating, and improves sleep, making it an excellent choice for long-term fat loss and overall health.

Looks like @ThomasDeLauerOfficial made an error in reviewing the second study (Western vs Mediterranean diets in monkeys). According to Table 1 in the study, both the human and the monkey Mediterranean diets had *less* polyunsaturated fats than the Western diets; furthermore, the o3/o6 ratio was very different, with the Mediterranean diet having 2-3:1, and the Western having 15:1. There also seems to be a typo in the table itself since the ratio is listed as o3:o6, but in our reality the Western diet is known to have much more o6 than o3, so it's probably meant to say o6:o3. If that assumption is correct, the Western diet in this study would have much more linoleic acid than the Mediterranean one, and that can explain the detrimental effects (high linoleic acid in the diet is known to increase inflammation and induce obesity).

No mate. It's the quality of the food, the freshness of what we eat. It's the weather. It's the way of life, not running around stressing about "success" all the time. This is the way my Italian born mother ate! I grew up in the late 50's and 60's, and no one in my family, or extended family was fat. We did eat pasta, but my mother made it and we ate it once a week. We ate whole grain bread because that’s what my father loved. We used olive oil, and butter to a lessor degree. We ate chicken, some beef, some pork, game meat, some fish, eggs, cheese, lentils (and other beans), fresh greens, tomatoes, eggplant, carrot, celery, cucumbers, lots of herbs, and spices, onions and garlic, and some fruits in season, and always there was fresh lemon for cooking or to put in iced water. Pistachios, walnuts and almonds also were always to be found in our house, and we drank red wine once in a while.

But the general principle seems good, those research papers are interesting, and those benefits sound awesome! Thanks for compiling them so nicely ☺

I think part of the issue when we compare Mediterranean diet is the fact we aren't comparing the ingredients themselves. Many of the carbs in Europe on the Mediterranean areas, aren't the genetically modified wheats we are eating here in the states. Our bodies don't process it the same way. Going to Italy and eating pizza and pasta is a major indication on how the quality of ingredients compares. You never get that heavy feeling and sluggishness that you would in the states.

All of this ignores the context of metabolic dysfunction that most americans now exist in a severe state of. A Mediterranean diet may well be superior, but a 400 lb person with prediabetes doesn't need to eat moderate to high carb any kind of diet until they've first spent an extended period of time on a zero carb diet to bring their metabolism and insulin back into a "normal" state, and bring their weight down to something that isn't an imminent risk to their life. Sustainability in a diet is crucial, but that should come after the immediate physical threat is addressed, and as fast as possible.

I almost died!!! On 10/11/24 at about 4am I went via ambulance to Intermountain Health Medical Emergency Services in Salt Lake City (actually in Murray UT), was immediately admitted to ICU. I am a type 2 diabetic who had diabetic keto acidosis! (And this is important because we are NOT SUPPOSED to get that!!) But it was atypical, my sugars had been relatively low (I had finally woken up with a 108 BS according to my CGM! Yay! No dawn phenomenon!!!). I was ON the keto/ketovour diet and was doing pretty good, but I was ALSO ON JARDIANCE (SGLT2)!!! That combination almost killed me!! I was feeling sick for a few days, and had thrown up a few nights ago. I thought I just had the “keto flu” you hear about, and so I just tried to push through it and ugh, boy did I feel yucky! Things finally came to a head when at about 3:30am in the morning as I was “trying” to sleep I started hyperventilating! It was as if I had tried to run a marathon at a sprinting speed, my lungs wanted to explode. My whole body was hurting and spasming. I was dizzy, too wobbly to walk or get out of bed. I also threw up then and it was BLACK... I remember thinking “Hmmm.. I don't recall eating anything BLACK! What the heck is THAT!?” I finally admitted I needed to go to the hospital because I needed PAIN KILLERS to help me with excruciating pain, I also figured that black vomit was not good, so ya, please take me to the hospital! I ended up on life support. I can have my husband (a doctor) help me decipher the medical records, but my “health” markers were WAYYYYYYYY OFF! One important “buffer” needed for life was unreadable, meaning I had NO more “buffer”. My blood acidity level was also up off the charts. So anyway first thing they did was try to ask me questions, kinda hard as I was going in and out of consciousness. I remember vaguely the ride to the hospital, being rolled out of the ambulance into a metal room (or maybe just metal doors, I don't know?”) being lifted/transferred to the hospital stretcher, then rolled into another room, then a team of about 8-10 ER staff all surrounding me. The questions were “what was that from” (from me groaning in pain) “where does it hurt” (everywhere) “can you be more specific” (ok I'll try... my back, my stomach, my legs, my feet...) I guess they were trying to figure out if I was having a heart attack before they did anything else. After a few more groans in pain they said “Lets get her some morphine” and I immediately got some relief. But I was still breathing REALLY HARD, that didn't slow down until much later on, I'll have to go view my medical records to figure out when that was. The rest of my time that next 24 hrs is kinda a blur. I was trying to sleep, but they were waking me up trying to prick my finger to see what my blood sugars were doing every hour, and they were drawing blood for labs often, and they were waking me up to see if I could do any physical therapy, and I was asking them to please UNTIE ME from the IV's from both elbow pits & from the compression leg thingies tying both legs down to help me get to the toilet so I could pee. I wasn't allowed to eat or drink for 24 hrs. They didn't even want me sipping on water (only allowed to chew/swallow ice chips), because THEY were giving me water via IV and they needed to know exactly how much water went into me, and then as I was peeing into this container they were measuring how much fluid was coming out of me as well. Ugh. I'm just tired again just writing/reading this all. Ok, next phase. Next day I am transferred to the regular hospital floor. They are now giving me insulin shots. But I am dismayed, because I did not WANT insulin shots! I was trying every which way but loose to AVOID insulin shots! The diabetic educator was trying to convince me I needed insulin shot prescription. I was being a pain-in-the-butt because I kept insisting I did NOT want insulin shots! We were at an impasse. They were looking at me like I'm crazy. And I was just having SUCH a hard time. I do over react to stress and that can make my BS go UP. Shots/pokes/jabs drive me crazy! I have a complete meltdown internally, meanwhile outside I'm trying to hide that. My poor sons inherited this from me. When they get labs drawn or get a shot they faint! They are fully grown men and they are fainting! One time I was trying to show my younger son how my glucose monitor worked so I pricked one of his fingers.... AND HE FAINTS! So ya, they inherited that from somewhere, and that somewhere was ME! Now I'm getting “poked” more than a hundred times a day it seems! And they have me on insulin, for the first time in my 15 years with diabetes I'm on insulin. But to tell the truth the insulin DID SAVE MY LIFE!!! AND THE GLUCOSE ALSO SAVED MY LIFE!!! How confusing is that?!? It's confusing! Anyway, I'm having a hard time because what I WANTED TO DO (do Keto, no insulin!) was not what THEY wanted me to do. I am battling the medical establishment.... AND MY HUSBAND THE DOCTOR TOO. Ok, so 24 hours in ICU. Then the next day I am transferred to the regular hospital floor (oh ya! REALLY FUNNY STORY associated with that!!! I didn't sleep a wink after that “visitation”!!). And now it's the next day and I will be discharged from the hospital. We have a meeting with my ER doc. And he has consulted with some hospitalists & endocrinologists. They very clearly decided that my problem was NOT the keto diet! My problem was the JARDIANCE ON the Keto diet! They released me saying “No insulin, NO JARDIANCE, you can do Keto” End of story!! YAY!! So now instead of spending more than $800 a month on diabetes prescriptions (no more Jardiance, Invocana, no more Metformin, no more ANYTHING!!) I'll instead be spending that money on LOBSTER and eating that with BUTTER & LEMON, and I'll have a side of RIB EYE to go with that!!! Cartman of South Park was correct!!! “Tell the President to have a little steak with his butter!” I hope I survive this new diet! We will see!! Wish me luck! So anyway I'm writing all of this with the hopes to GET THE WORD OUT!! I was looking out the window of my hospital room as we were talking with my doc, we were sharing that the ER staff was saying “we see this all the time” and I'm thinking “Well, that is WAY TOO MUCH then”. And the ER doc was saying “well, its not all the time, maybe once a month” and I'm still thinking “THIS IS STILL WAY TOO MUCH!!” People with type 2 diabetes are out there, and they are getting SICK AND TIRED of this disease PROGRESSION!!! Do we keep going with this PROGRESSION? Do we lose our sight and go blind? Do we lose our Feet? (I've got horrible nephropathy in my feet! I'm scared!) Our Legs? My thumb? (because that is constantly hurting me and is numb, is my thumb dying and am I going to lose my thumb?) How far and how long are we going to let this disease PROGRESS?!? Can we get off the merry-go-round of gain more weight->become insulin resistant->have higher blood sugars->take insulin shots->gain more weight-> etc and on and on. No people! NO!!! We are TRYING TO GET HEALTHY! We go to the store, we buy the GOOD stuff, we learn to cook it the right way and say “oh DANG, that is YUMMY!!!” We might even (if you are like me) lick the plate clean leaving our poor puppy nothing. So ya, back to my point, how many type 2 diabetics out there ON JARDIANCE who want to give this Keto thing a try? Because I tried it 3 times, 2 times I failed.... because I was likely about to go into DKA back then too, and I stopped it by giving up & eating CARBS (and thereby continuing on with my disease progression)... not by GETTING OFF JARDIANCE!!!!! I have a HUGE question..... HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE SUFFERED WITH KETO FLU WERE ON JARDIANCE or other SGLT2's? I would seriously LOVE to see a survey done to ask that question! I'm writing here because this IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE!! Please help me get the word out!!! GET OFF JARDIANCE or other SGLT2's if you want to STAY ON KETO!! Thank you for reading this! Stay safe! God Bless!

Over the years it seems quite clear the fastest and healthiest way to "lose weight" is some form of keto. What no one likes to talk about for whatever reason is that carbs eventually turn into fat but that fat doesn't end up getting used in the same way it otherwise would on a keto based metabolism. Essentially meaning if you want to lose weight the healthy and extremely fast way, don't eat carbs or sugars, eat fat and protein from animal products. Best part is on this diet not only will you lose fat without exercising but you'll gain muscle through body recomposition.

A true Mediterranean diet contains *small portions of fish, meat, eggs and dairy and is mostly made up of legumes, grains, vegetables, and fruits. Yes, they eat bread but it’s not sprayed with glyphosate . Yes they eat some pasta but not giant portions and they make their own homemade tomato sauce (without the seeds and skin ) which is much easier to digest and they use mostly extra virgin olive oil.

You kind of twist this demitarian diet here, legumes are for example a stable in mediterranean diet. You are simply emphasizing fats way too much. So its not about trimming out refined cards, but also trimming out a lot of meat & saturated fats. And replacing them with whole grains & legumes. And increasing vegetable consumption.

Learn to cook. Just cook your own food from scratch. That's why there's an obesity problem. It has nothing to do with diet. (location or name) How a meal is prepared is vital to what ingredients are in food with a complete mix of amino acids, low GI, carbs, omega 3 fats, electrolytes, and vitamins. Some of which would have to be supplemented. It would benefit anyone looking to improve their baseline weight. Over time, the baseline would fall to a lower BMI. However, with robust exercising, what could take 500 days could be improved depending on the starting weight.
