Some great conditions for shooting woodland scenes in and some beautiful images captured too. The light on the final day was epic! I'm so envious. I'm usually driving to work when I witness anything even remotely like this, with no time to stop let alone capture anything. Of course, on my days off I rarely see epic conditions, but when they do happen it makes it so special and I appreciate it even more.

I love Nigel's woodland photography sessions. As much as there's skill that goes into capturing mountain scenery, it seems a greater challenge to assemble the jumble and mess of a woodland into striking compositions.

Good to see you being happy in your local woodlands scenes. Being there on the right moment, that's your message for the coming year and I will take it to heart. We had a lot of grey covered days, not inspiring to go out and the few brilliant hour there were, I had to much appointments in my agenda. But I bought a Z 105 macro lens. That in combination with my new Z6 III camera offers so much of fun playing with light and depht of field, even with the autofocus. Makes waiting on better conditions bearable. Nice Christmas days, Bert.

The core theme here is the separation between fore, mid, and back ground, as a way to have more depth in the 2D depiction of a 3D world. "Wanting more fog" makes this main theme fogged. Here, I would try to shoot what Nikon call "focus shift shooting" - manually - and in that way have a simpler possibility to deal with each separately. Before stacking. Or towards each of the layers separately. Let me add to this "what" concept, that I'm no Photoshop wizard so I would have to do some puzzling before the "how" turns the "what" into reality. Or, the jury on my idea is out.

Good morning Mr Danson. I'm liking the compact tripod head, what brand and model is it please?
@kqschwarz9 сағат бұрын
Love your videos. I wonder if you might explain something to me. Early on in the video you said "shooting at F8, it doesn't get better than this" and then shortly after "I wish there was more fog to give the image some depth.". There in lies my question..."Why do landscape photographers all seem to use a small aperture in their photographs?" This is particularly vexing to me for close-in woodland photography, where the "background" might be only 20 feet from the "foreground". I don't own any normal or wide angle zooms, preferring to compose with the field-of-view constraints prime lenses offer (I am admittedly weird in hamstringing myself like that). However, one of the benefits of a "prime-strategy" is wide-aperture photography becomes possible. Personally, I love the look of woodland photography that has the subject in a narrow plane of focus and most everything else is dreamy out of focus. Sort of like having a fog-machine available anytime that perfectly adjusts sharpness to the subject. I used to have 4x5 cameras that not only naturally have a narrow plane of focus due to the size of the "sensor", but also have swing and tilt motions to allow for sharpness in any narrow plane, not just those parallel to the sensor. Anyway, that's my question, "why not use wide-open apertures once in a while for woodland photography?". It might be worthwhile for you to pick up a 35 or 24 mm f1.4 lens to try out. Who knows, you could start a whole new movement I landscape photography. All the best.

@jpdj271512 сағат бұрын
Fog makes the Autumn landscape of the European mixed trees landscapes (biotopes) really very much more interesting, as you say. As you have revealed some of the tools (apps) you use to predict weather and light for a location, the question here is if you can better predict the fog you want/need, artistically. As you and I live under the influence of the Warm Gulf Stream, our winters begin about at the Winter Solstice, but the winter climate starts roughly one month later due to the warmth still present in the seas bordering to our countries. I have been thinking if we have to distinguish different kinds of fog, in the sense of "causes". We would, in general either need a sort of "cloud inversion"- difficult in my flat-as-a-pancake country, but not completely impossible [1] - or we would need moisture condensed or desublimated on or near the soil because of cooling down followed by a warming episode that causes evaporation/sublimation where the warmer air cannot completely absorb the moisture as invisible-to-the-naked-eye gas. Our local traffic-weather forecasts may predict some fog in a way, but away from main traffic paths, in larger nature areas, we will have different chances. [1] The best one in my lifetime was "so sad I didn't have a camera with me". On the early morning PT commute to my photo studio, in winter, the sky was brilliantly clear due to the absence of any moist in the atmosphere. Kit at the studio and kit at home, not en route. This was a case of (a) freezing temperature and (b) the fields around the single carriageway while being frosted got warmed by the still very low angle sunlight. This caused an about 60 cm (2 ft) high layer of very dense fog - like a cloud layer. The cows in the fields seemed to float on that cloud layer. Saturated colours due to significant light, good contrast, bright pure white. This was what is called "magic realism" in painted art history.

I think I have a problem with greens. I find it very difficult to get them right in my photos. In some of yours shown in this video, I perceive them as oversaturated and rather too blue tinted. Is it all down to me? Great video anyhow. Lovely compositions.

I’ve complained before, to the point of sending Nigel an email. It is awful. He’s been using her voice forever, and the same old songs. I stopped listening after a while. Terrible. So much better if he had nothing or simple music with no voice, like Mads Peter Iverson. I thought I was the only one, so thanks for commenting!
