About James Ketchell
James is a serial adventurer, motivational speaker and Scouting ambassador.
On 1st February 2014, James became the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world.
Seven years prior to all this, he was recovering from a serious motorcycle accident that left him with broken legs as well as a severely broken and dislocated ankle. The prognosis was that he was likely to suffer a permanent walking impairment and would certainly not be able to continue the active physical lifestyle he had enjoyed up to that point.

I've flown an R22 but I've never flown a gyroplane. Sure would like too though. I wouldn't think that they would tolerate too much in the way of private aviation in Russia.

G'day from Australia. Following you all the way. I own an M16 and it would have been great to have welcomed you here. Am planning a trip to the USA in the next few months. What is your itinerary in the US?

Hi James, you seemed to fly into (around), Moscow pretty low (1000 - 1500ft?). No problems with authorities at that height?

outstanding video. Why the two helos? Were they required by the authorities? Could you have landed in Moscow without them?

It was ok for the authorities if James flew without us. We just wanted to welcome him and support on the last section of the path. Two helos were from AOPA Russia

@@vorobievaya Awesome. Thanks for the clarification. I recently watched a youtube series from Pilot Yellow about his trip through eastern Russia in an R66 as part of an around the world flight. My impression was that the language difference (PY doesn't speak Russian) was a challenging aspect of his adventure. As just one of many youtube viewers who's also a pilot, please accept my thanks for anything you can do to help Mr. Ketchell. I'm concerned about the reliability of his aircraft and the difficulty he might have in getting spare parts as he ventures further out in eastern Russia. Fly safe. Peace.

You're going to have to think of an even more epic word than epic when you fly over Greenland. Just saying :)

Going to be real honest here. Your videos are interesting but you don't really show too much of the flights and they seem to be more of a documentary of you other than the trip. I just like most watching want to see the scenery of the trip and some of the documentary of the flights. I mean if I needed an education I'd go to the history channel. Oh and trash the music. It sounds like it was created by a kindergartner and was way too over powering. Now that's honesty!

Dude why not fly an airplane around the world, perhaps a Pa28 would be great, gyrocopters aren’t reliable for such long flights and not comfortable at all. Also the ATC audio is inaudible :(. Good luck for the next leg.

An Autogyro is in fact an aircraft/airplane. And an autogyro is the only type of powered aircraft that has not flown around the world. If any aircraft can cover 400-450 nm in one leg...then it can fly around the world. Norman, who is mentioned in the video, has already almost flown around the world, but was scuppered back in 2013 by Russian Bureaucracy. He was unable to fly to eastern Russia and therefore his attempt was voided. So reliability was not the problem...bureaucracy was...but now James has the right people behind him and the Russian bureaucracy is not a big problem and doing the relatively short hops each day will get him around the world. We support many circumnavigations by fix winged aircraft each year...and each and every crew member is a hero for attempting it.

Flying a PA-28 around the world is barely being adventurous Jef. Many developments have changed the gyrocopter arena with factory built/certified machines now on the market. Rotary wing is much less susceptible to turbulence and more comfortable to fly than fixed wing, the Magni M-16 is a thrill to fly. Perhaps You should try one out Jef?
@Jeffpower-

Andrew Mozdzen yes I will definitely try to fly one. I was just thinking that a gyrocopter would have a very low cruising speed and it also seems much more exposed to the elements than an airplane. Anyhow I am sure he will manage well those challenges. 👍
