I love how she’s doing it all her own way. Uncompromising, boundary setting, blunt and insanely gifted. I hope she changes industry and the public’s perfection of their ‘right’ to famous people. May her star continue to rise on her terms.

Chappell Roan my favorite singer at the moment, all her songs are great and the orchestrations are perfect, gifted for up tempo songs as well as ballads: Love is kaleidoscope for example. Thanks

I love this stage performance, I think she did a great vocal considering she was running around in a suit of armour! - My favourite live vocal performance of Good Luck Babe is on Jimmy Fallon, you can hear her vocal a lot more clearly in that one.

Chappell headlined Pittsburgh, PA, USA Pride and she provided my soul with something I haven’t experienced with live music in a long time. Her performance ability was top notch. The more I got into her music the more I respected her more and more!

I think Chappell uses the prerecorded backing track vocals less than some of the other singers today. On this song on think the verses and bridge are all her live. For the choruses the backing track has a low melody that she sings over. The first “I told you so” is just her live vocal but then the backing melody comes in on the second one. This is the same backing track she uses for all of her shows.

I feel like her best vocal for this song was her Jimmy Fallon performance, but I love the production and theatricality of this one, and that bridge belt is just *chef’s kiss. I can’t imagine how hot it must’ve been with the armor and fire in the background

I read somewhere she was referencing Julie d'Aubigny, who burned down a convent and escaped with her lover, correct me if i'm wrong! I know some people think it's Jeanne d'Arc but knowing Chappell, I think Julie fits.

I think the way the VMA’s audio engineers do these artist no favors is always an issue. They need to lay off the backing and turn the mics UP!

the chrous was a backing track, so it could feel more full in the performance, compared to one voice singing it.

As far as Easter eggs most people are calling Joan of Arc but some people are digging deeper and saying the influence is Julie D’Aubigny who you’ll probably have to look up like I did.

I thought the vocals on all of the VMA live performances were a bit low sounding. I don’t think it had anything to do with the artists but more with the volume control and mixing of the backing voice tracks. Just my thoughts based on it seeming to be with all of the performances.

Fantastic by all means…. Last couple belting notes stayed a bit too tight. After she reaches the note, and makes this tiny drop, instead of relaxing and belting out, her cords did stay tight.

Chappell was quickly compared to historic heroine Joan of Arc, who led the French army to victory over the English at Orléans in 1429. However, many viewers think she and her sword-brandishing dancers could also have been a nod to Julie d’Aubigny - another famous French woman. At some stage, she was definitely in love with a young woman - her first experience with someone of the same sex - who was sent away to a convent in Avignon to prevent the relationship developing. But, d’Aubigny wasn’t deterred and joined the convent herself to save her lover from a life as a nun. The couple set a room on fire and left the body of a dead nun behind in the hope it would be mistaken for the young woman. Basically, they tried to fake her death. So, it’s fair to theorise that Roan’s fiery performance might have been recreating that scene. Although d’Aubigny was a renowned opera singer, it was her sword-wielding and action-packed life that many know her for now.

I only discovered Chappell's music a few weeks ago. I absolutely love her - every song is a winner! I keep saying I can hear influences of Kate Bush, Gwen Stefani, Eurythmics, Lady Gaga, Toyah Wilcox and a whole lot more through her (limited but amazing) discography. I'm really excited by what I've seen of filmed gigs, etc. BUT I fear she may get pushed down a "choreography" route (ala this performance) and it's simply not necessary.

" Chappell & Sabrina are the most exciting artists we've had in ages " " No bands anymore " I was just having both of these conversations with a friend last week. Honestly, Florence isn't mainstream-mainstream in the US but --- She is the only one I can think of who has even been traveling with a band. No instruments at all being taken on tours. and we've been stuck in this Billie Eilish sad E-girl music phase for ages, before she even came out because so many people wanted to be like Lana & Lorde. And not EVERYONE needs to be doing sad, slow tempo songs with almost no belting EVERY song.
