@glennsampson59454 жыл бұрын
I was glad you included some old time plays too. The one old time play that definitely should be there is Jim Marshall's 60 yard wrong way run. Sometimes life isn't fair. You're a great hall of famer and the only play anybody can remember is running the ball the wrong way. Also, it would be nice to have a little context for these plays. That's why a lot of these plays are so famous. For example, the first play was the end of the 1958 championship game. It was the first nationally televised game and the first NFL game to go into sudden death overtime. This game helped propel the popularity of the sport. Back then the goalposts were then at the front of the endzone. The Colts (then in Baltimore) had the ball on the right side of the field. A short field goal attempt from the side would leave a narrow angle while kicking from the middle would leave a wide easy angle. The conventional wisdom was to run to the left setting up an easy field goal if they failed to score a touchdown. Thinking that the Colts would do this, the Giants stacked that side of the line. The Colts tripped them up by running the other way and Ameche scored. The second play was the end of the "Ice Bowl," an NFL championship game played on New Year's Eve. Green Bay installed an electrically heated field which was supposed to melt any snow keeping the field clean. But they did not anticipate that the night before the game, the temperature would drop to a record 29 degrees below 0. This broke the heating system and turned the melted snow into a sheet of ice. The game has ever since been known as the "Ice Bowl." At game time, the temperature was 13 below and only decreased from there. It was so brutally cold that play by play announcer Frank Gifford's cup of coffee froze solid -- so much for using the coffee to keep warm! The players from both teams said it was by far the most physically demanding game they ever played in. The play occurred on 3rd down with Green Bay being out of timeouts. The conventional wisdom was to call a pass play so that if they weren't successful they would have another shot; a running play would eat up all the remaining time. Lombardi took a huge gamble in calling for a QB sneak but the gamble worked and Green Bay became the only team to ever win three consecutive NFL championships. Two weeks later, Green Bay played the AFL champions, the Oakland Raiders, it what would retroactively be called Superbowl II.

Thank you for this; it took a lot of hard work. However, you really did miss one. SB XVII Miami led Washington 17-13 in the 4th Q. You could also include Mike Ditka's catch and run for the Bears in their first game after the Kennedy assassination. Ditka was full of emotion and nothing was going to stop him. Mark Gastineau's sack dance against the Rams and the Redskins fun bunch in Texas stadium. Both started fights that began the whole celebration controversy. Tony Dorsett's 99 yard run against the Vikings in the playoffs and A.J. Duhe's interception for a touchdown against the Jets in the playoffs. One more, Jack Squirek intercepting the screen pass and scoring against the Redskins in the Superbowl

About 10 years or so ago Jack Del Rio and Mike Nolan wore suits on the sideline. Nolan did it to honor his father who wore a suit on the sidelines and Del Rio wanted in on it. Originally the NFL said no because coaches are only to wear team logo attire but Reebok told the NFL it will make team attire suits and the NFL then said yes to the suit proposal.

A few more most famous plays to consider for Vol 2: Jim Marshall running the "wrong way" on fumble return (49ers vs Vikes circa 1966) John Riggins game-changing 4th & 1 TD run in SB 17 ('skins vs 'fins 1982-83) Lawrence Taylor's sack on Joe Theismann - his leg bone snapping on national TV (Giants vs 'skins MNF 1986) Trailing by 6 points with 00:40 left, Cowboys backup QB Clint Longley replaces Staubach and heaves game winning Hail Mary TD to Drew Pearson ('boys vs 'skins Thanksgiving Day circa 1974)
@glennsampson59454 жыл бұрын
Note: Clint Longley replaced injured Roger Staubach in the middle of the 3rd quarter and led the Cowboys on three scoring drives with the last one being that game winning bomb near the end of the game. You've got the date right. The game was played on Thanskgiving 1974. Note: Clint Longley only played in a few other games and had lousy stats. If you can have only one career highlight, this is the highlight you want.

The two plays that stand out most in my memories involve the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The first one they were 0-12 going up against the 12-0 Dallas Cowboys. Tied late in the game and looking for the upset, the Tampa defender tried for the interception and missed. Dallas receiver scored the winning touchdown. Second one was at the Chicago Bears. Bears had a shutout going late in the game. Vinny Testaverde threw an easy interception that should have sealed the deal. Instead the Chicago defender tried to lateral the ball to a teammate and a Buccaneer receiver grabbed the ball out of the air and scored their team's only touchdown of the game spoiling Chicago's bid for a shutout.

I remember a last minute play against the Cowboys that was unusual. I just don’t recall the year or other team. Third and long. No time left for another play before half. Cowboys in prevent and the offense has to go forty yards to get in field goal range. Offense throws a short screen. Five blockers get in front of the receiver and he makes it to the end zone! Anyone remember that play and the teams? Secondly, in 1961 in a game between the Colts and the Lions, Colts scored on a last minute come back touchdown. They leave nine seconds on the clock. What happens next is incredible. The Lions take the kickoff and leave one second on the clock. One play. Lions QB Milt Plum throws the to Lions receiver and he scores from seventy yards out.

Nobody knelt then. It was considered the macho thing to just play out the clock normally. Here's the rest of the story: Larry Csonka, the running back who never got the handoff (bad job by the QB, was a pro-bowl player for years, and was in his last year in the league. HE HAD NEVER FUMBLED IN HIS CAREER BEFORE THIS PLAY! And he never fumbled again!

Here's what actually happened on this play: Kenny (The Snake) Stabler was a crafty and wily player. He had rehearsed this situation with his teammates beforehand, saying, "If we ever get stuck with the game on the line, and we are about to get tackled, let's purposely fumble the ball forward, and see if we can get it into the end zone." All three offensive players involved in this play later admitted that they purposely fumbled the ball forward. It was the last play of the game, and it turned a defeat into victory....I think it was a playoff game. The NFL changed the rule after they admitted it. Now you cannot advance an offensive fumble in the last 2 minutes of either half.
