I actually have my own copy of Musashi's "Book Of Five Rings". It's a very interesting read, and a great window into Musashi's mind, which really was his deadliest weapon. The story of the build-up to his duel with Sasaki Kojiro is something I'm surprised you've left out, because it's just as famous as the duel itself. Mushashi deliberately arrived two hours late to the duel to infuriate Kojiro and make him get careless. When he saw that Musashi was wielding a wooden Boken that he carved from a spare oar on the boat that brought him to the island, he yelled at Musashi, "Are you late because you are afraid, or are you simply insane?" Kojiro drew his sword (a No-Dachi) and threw away the scabbard. The final words between Musashi and Kojiro went something like this: Musashi: You have already lost. Kojiro: What?! Musashi: Why else would you throw away your scabbard? A warrior only throws away his scabbard if he knows he's going to die.
@Li.Siyuan4 жыл бұрын
From what I heard, he used the oar, not a bokken made from an oar. The extra reach gave him a huge advantage, despite the unwieldiness which he overcame with his great strength.
@kevinnorwood87824 жыл бұрын
@@Li.Siyuan Interesting about him using the oar itself. But I heard the same as you about why he used it: He wanted something that would counter the reach of Kojiro's weapon.

There were so many kinds of samurai. What samurai was varies depending on the periods. One type of samurai reigned over Japan as warrior and also as politician. And other one was robber with katana. And so on. Knowing more about japanese history is knowing more about samurai. From Japan with love.
@koukidenhikaitu49904 жыл бұрын
The Ghosts of Tsushima, like the movie The Last Samurai, is based on a fairly cursory historical study of armor, costumes, and people's names. I don't think Americans are very familiar with the Kamakura-era armor and costumes that serve as the backdrop for Ghosts of Tsushima, so As a samurai, I'm guessing they're adopting armor and costume designs from the Warring States period, 300 years after the Kamakura period, which Americans can understand. As a Japanese, I feel somewhat uncomfortable there. But most Japanese have separated historical facts from entertainment, so few people will be offended by it. The Japanese will accept and enjoy Ghosts of Tsushima without the influence of political correctness.
@dubiousdevil95724 жыл бұрын
I'm American and think the Kamakura period is vastly interesting. But alas I actively chose to study Japanese history from like 12 years old and onward.

@jana87blues4 жыл бұрын
Well it's debatable, but my favourite is masamune. To me, nobunaga is far too cruel event it is the kind of leadership needed to that certain period. In the other hand, well as far as I know, masamune is known to be a fearless leader as well as an open minded character just like nobunaga himself. If only masamune was born before Iyeasu, and nobunaga let akechi mitshuhide deal with I'm sorry forget the two clan names which could be the trigger of mitshuhide betrayal, I wonder what is the alternate history of japan sengoku period.
@bluejellosuu95834 жыл бұрын
@@jana87blues Agung Jana well to honest with you masamune looks scary but at the same time is looking like a leader And I think masamune is a open minded character but he was one of the first ones to go to European countries and cities So basically if you view it as a "past connected to future route" you'll see he maybe made some mistakes by doin that "and example of it for me today (I Know it will sound Rather weeb like) the law of censorship in Japan and another one Japan attacking China (idk much but it still seems to me connected)"
@kiloxzzenn60264 жыл бұрын
I love nobunaaga too because he started the movement to unite Japan and tokugawa accomplished it. In terms of cruelty I can't really blame any of the samurais because the age of war is 13-14+ . That would turn someone I to a killer for sure by adult age.
