What other influential people in history are NOT being talked about enough?

Being from Poland I know one man, who deserves to be more recognized. His name is Felicjan Sławoj Składkowski. He is most known from his uphill battle against the peasants to increase the sanitation in the countryside during interwar Poland. His most important success was to educate the children of village inhabitants, how to hygienically solve the bladder and bowel issues, however sadly because of this outhouse in Polish language got a 2nd name after him, that is "sławojka". Many think it's a stupid area of interest, but look at countries like India or Pakistan. They're both more powerful than Poland, bigger, they even have atomic weapons, but what is the mentality of their people? When UN estabilished some outhouses they are repurposed to be the praying place for their local deity, while they do the necessary hygiene behind it. American soldiers during missions in the Middle East after being infected by god-knows-what bacteria from drinking local water and eating local food were the reason a term of "permamently fecalized country" got born in the official documents. He should get a golden monument for his acts and NOT in form of the outhouse. PS I even know a video about him, but sadly there's no subtitles.

I was not interested in history in high school. It was all geared towards memorizing dates and the broad view of the choices of "great men" without weaving it all together. Then I went to college and had a professor who would get off track talking about movies he liked ("Soylent Green is people!") But he also pieced together the history so that the context was more interesting. I learned about WW1 and WW2, which I had already learned in high school but instead of focusing heavily on dates of battles, he explained why it happened, the social context that pushed all of these countries to go to war not once but twice. Now I love history.

I believe Adams, Franklin and Jefferson would have been abolitionists originally for in the 1st draft of the declaration, they completely abolished slavery and had to take this clause out to appease the southern states and gain their support for the revolutionary war, otherwise the north would have had to fight Britain on their own and would have probably lost that fight. I believe it was Adams (could be jefferson, I forgot) who wrote about how this internal issue between the south and north would later rise up in later years, basically predicting that there would be a civil war over slavery.

Well what if someone challenged a person to a duel, and their response was get out of here I'm not dueling you. What happens then? People used to say, you will be known as a coward. What if someone's response to that was OK, I'm a coward. Then what happens? The challengee would contact authorities and say someone threatened me. He challenged me to a duel. I declined and now I'm afraid he will come after me. I want you to arrest him. Then what happens? What happens when someone who just doesn't want you to live anymore because reasons, and he or she is a skilled marksman or markswoman and challenges you to a duel. Then what happens? The two people never met, The person who is a marksman or woman is convinced that the only reason someone they just see in passing was born just to piss them off by their existence. Then what happens? What if someone from your past that you almost forgot about pops up out of nowhere and challenges you to a duel. Maybe when you were 12 you accidentally broke his big wheel, then what happens? What if a former spouse that never got over the divorce challenges you to a duel? It's been 20 years since you saw him or her, you've moved on got remarried and have a wonderful life. But they never got past it. Then what happens? What if someone cut in front of a person in a line to see a movie, the two never met each other. The cutee challenges the cutter to a duel. The cutter goes over to a friend and says see that guy over there challenged me to a duel. They laugh about it. The Cutee doesn't know the cutter has a following, a posee, a gang if you will. The cutter tells his gang that guy challenged me to a duel. We are going to follow him and challenge one of his family members to a kidnapping. Then what happens? Nobody would ever want to leave their house because at any place or any time anybody could challenge them to a duel for whatever reason occurs to them. Challenging someone to a duel is a life threatening act. It's just like sending a life threatening letter or text. Or verbally threatening the life of someone. Just think of your entire life. As you are remembering think if there is anyone who would have some sort of gripe against you. Maybe think of a sibling that you didn't always see eye to eye on every little thing. That person could threaten your life by challenging you to a duel simply because your birthday cake was nicer than their birthday cake.
@rmartinson19 Жыл бұрын
Being harmed in return after you harm someone making you and your victim "even" is not a viable legal defense. However, if the threat you posed to the victim was no longer valid (i.e. you are clearly and obviously no longer capable of doing them harm) and they continue to harm you past that point, they could face legal consequences since "self-defense" only covers putting an end the immediate threat against one's person or life. As an example, if somebody shoots at you then drops their gun and runs away with empty hands, if you shoot them in the back at that point, you could be looking at murder or attempted murder charges, because the threat against you was clearly over and no longer valid by the time you took your shot.

Regarding the legal argument against Clay by his would be assassin - self defense as a justification is limited. If you disable the assassin, that's all you get to do. Anything past that is not covered by self defense, so him cutting off body parts after stabbing him WAS illegal and Clay was guilty. That said, courts at the time recognized anger as a valid defense of certain actions. The most famous example of this is the Fighting Words Doctrine.

Being Canadian, we don't have a lot of historical figures that our Education system likes to talk about. The most "extreme" thing that got discussed was the burning of the White House in 1812. And lets be honest about that, that was really some Brits and colonists from the U.S. that wanted to remain loyal to the Crown, so they came North before The War for Independence; it wasn't "Canadians." Our most badass historical figures, or their exploits at least, won't be found in textbooks; they're found in the Geneva Conventions. By God do we have a hell of a high score on that leader board.

I don't think duels could ever be a thing today. Simply because of the weird protocols involved in it. Each duelist would have to have a second. Whereby if anything were to happen to one of the duelists the second is required to take their place. If you get into a dispute with your neighbor about something stupid like a property line, but you get the flu, and can't be there at the agreed upon time. Your best friend is not going to step in and either kill someone, or take a bullet for you. Also you can't bring back duels. It's condoning first degree murder. As well as conspiracy to commit first degree murder. Both duelists would be found guilty of conspiracy to commit first degree murder. The survivor would also be found guilty of committing first degree murder. As well as aiding suicide (potentially). The loser could also be charged with suicide (potentially). If you are found to have committed suicide, there goes any life insurance you might have. And probably court cases about any inheritance. Because of that, before the agreed upon time of the duel, you would have to hire a lawyer to get your finances in order to protect your family against any legal action filed against the beneficiar's claim. Still any life insurance you might have as a losing duelist would vanish. Also each duelist second, as well as the person in charge of the operation of the duel. The referee if you will, would also be guilty of conspiracy to commit first degree murder, as well as aiding a suicide (potentially). If you, as a participating duelist told anyone, say a family member or friend about the upcoming duel, they too could be potentially charged with conspiracy to commit first degree murder, or aiding suicide. To avoid that, they would have had to contact proper authorities about the duel. Along with the immorality of it all, there's just too much downside to the whole thing.

9:05 Yes. there is a line between "self defense" and "retaliation" If i punch you in the face, and you hit me back.. self defense. but then if i am no longer fighting you or i fall to the ground, and you continue.. it is retaliation and actually Assault/Battery (which we'd both be charged with). In this case, "Mayhem" is the brutal dismemberment (or to make the limb/body part unusable) of a person. If during the above example, i am fall defenseless to the ground and you proceed to break my jaw open with your hands, and press my eyes into my skull.. that's Mayhem. i know this because not only do i have a Bachelors in Criminal Justice, but when i was 24 i got into a fight with this dude over some BS he did to my car.. i held him to the ground while my dad called the police.. while waiting for the cops to show up.. i decided to put into practice this thing i saw on some movie and dislocated the dude's shoulder. he scream "you broke my fking arm" and i said "no i didn't" as i popped his arm back in place. "he screamed again so like a stupid shit i dislocated it again saying "Make up your mind." Luckily i wasn't arrested but i was issued a citation and had to go to court. the dude didn't show up to court so the judge laughed and said "Good, i really didn't want to lock you up for this. but if he would have showed up, then i would have had to do something. Not Guilty. Don't do that again."

So about the case that the assassin filed against Cassius Clay, there is a precedent for that. Self defense only goes so far, but once the attacker is no longer a threat then you legally no longer have a need to defend yourself so further attacks no longer qualify as self defense and thus they can then take you to court for it.

I know this is a month or so old but i thought i might share my knowledge on this. There is some truth to the whole "if i cut him and he cuts me we're even." if someone were to come up and punch me and i retaliate but shooting him, there is a chance i could get in trouble because my response was not proportionate to his actions. In a lot of martial arts/self defense courses they will more than likely tell you about this. Basically just saying the reaction has to be justified by the first actions. It is a very hard case to try and win if you are the one who struck first, because well... you started it. Hope this helps! Thank you for the great videos Mr Terry, I would've loved to have you as my history teacher.

9:10 Law student here. Can't speak to the 1800s, but nowadays self-defense only works when the would-be victim has incapacitated the would-be offender to a point where any reasonable person would believe the offender can no longer harm the victim. If Brown was incapacitated after Clay's first stab, Clay should not have kept going.

Live right down the road from the state shrine. I love knowing the house inside and out and the stories from that place. And the fact this legend was the reason I went to "white hall elementary." that and at the time it was the only school around for elementaries aside from private school.

I’d just assign this video to your students. There’s so much history it’s hard to cover in class. And TFE is so entertaining, I might spend 5 min the next day asking a few students what they thought about it. It’s hard to get more entertaining than TFE so I’d just leave it to him
