17:18 The reason they continued to advance is because for a armored advance (or in general, any vehicle advance), the standard procedure to getting ambushed is to not become trapped and to try and break the ambush. It's not a good idea to stand still, because you're in the kill field and they already have to sighted up, and you can't really go backwards, that'll take too long. So the best solution is to become hyper aggressive and run the ambush down or at least attempt to break through.

37:30 the publicity tours are actually a smart thing. One, nearly everyone loves a good war hero and meeting one might just boost recruiting numbers, and volunteers have much better moral than draftees, quite obviously. Two, it gives the war hero a bit of time off after an exceptionally stressful situation in wartime and the guy can see his family who will be relieved that he’s still alive. You also don’t need to give the guy leave since he’s still working for the government!
@drewwar934421 күн бұрын

17:20 when ambushed, the first thing you have to do is get out of the "kill zone", the most effective way to do that is to push forward. Ideally, one section/platoon pushes forward aggressively to keep the enemy's attention, while another section or platoon flanks them to attack from the side. Tanks don't have rear view mirrors, so backing up is extremely dangerous to everyone else on the field. The strongest armor is in front, so turning sideways to the enemy, or turning your back to them is a sure way to take catastrophic damage.

36:30 So this is a common tactic that the USA uses is they take their best, and remove them from the front lines and use them as propaganda heroes for citizen morale, and also to continue training the next set of soldiers about to deploy. TFE gives a really good reason for why they do this in his video about our Ace of Aces Richard Bong, in that instead of having 1 amazing fighter pilot and 30 good ones, they take out the amazing pilot and have him train instead, and now they have 30 great other pilots.
@drewwar934421 күн бұрын
And arguably, this is one of the main contributors to why we won the war. It is most certainly why we won the war in the Pacific. Because the japanese did the exact opposite they kept their best pilots in combat and when they would die they would lose that experience and knowledge So itbasically breaks down to quality over quantity.Yet again a prime example of why training is important

10:04 Yes, that was a huge propaganda opportunity, and the US military capitalized on it. Putting military dudes in front of cameras and getting their names broadcasted on radios was cheap and highly effective for recruiting in those days. Macho stuff like that motivates guys to sign up by pumping up their bravado and making them feel like they can be a badass, too.

31:58 If a unit advances too fast they could end up lost behind enemy lines, or even worse, surrounded and cut off from supply lines which, if not reconnected soon, could be catastrophic especially for tanks. 3:10 "How does that work?" Basically Lee made his own glasses frames specifically for sharpshooting, and you are of course allowed to wear glasses at the Olympics. You are not allowed to wear them for the Navy eye exams though, so he had to find ways around the exams; later on by getting a bunch of recommendations from previous people he served under (the rejection being described occurred when he was not yet an admiral), or in the academy, where his fellow cadets liked him so much they basically told him the answers. Admiral Lee was a very interesting individual; shooting was a passion for him that he translated to improving the accuracy of the guns on the ships he commanded (like, revising powder and range tables and coming up with a formula to take into account the rotation of the earth in your shot levels of improvement). In fact, the reason his eyesight wasn't perfect was as a result of a childhood accident involving screwing around with gunpowder.
@NagaTales19 күн бұрын
37:10 - Actually, one of the reasons the US did so well in WW2 was that they took everyone of their "best" in every field, pulled them back to the rear, and turned them into instructors. So yes, this does mean taking the best off the front line and losing that immediate edge, *but* then the average soldier/sailor/pilot/marine was being trained by the best to a higher standard, so the average competency of the US's troops as a whole went up. This was especially true in the Pacific war with our pilots. Japan had the opposite approach of keeping their best on the attack, and their best aces were eventually all shot down, while our best aces were back in the US teaching other pilots how to become aces themselves.

So just to make a clear issue of civilians to military understanding. From a perspective of a tank you wont know what is realistically fighting you, everything sounds like metal woodpeckers on your tank with its limited visability. Generally most tankers only know they are under some type of cannon fire if it rings out deep enough which can also be concussive just like High Explosive splash and spall. Most tank crews have very limited view and WW2 was no exception having even less then most tanks that came just 10 years later. So with that known most of the Ambushes are often cleared by using the tanks as mobile shields to advance the Infantry to clear the positions. This is a Doctrinal choice and often tanks were used as "Infantry support" a artillary bunker on tracks if you will trying to push up and provide cover for infantry to move in and exploit weak cracks in enemy formations and defensive lines. The general rule of thumb in this is tanks usually operate in units and then they have squads of infantry with them when they know the fighting is closer. Ambushes are horrific and tanks are the only lifeline in these conditions. When the tanks were nocked out the fleeing infantry were hammered with automatic fire from MG34s and rifle fire. Tankers are hard to replace as well and so the loss of those tank crew is hard on the force. This became an issue, where tanks are expected to "Push forward" if there seems to be non-effective fire so the Infantry can push up and clear the entrenched defenses. This is also expected when tank forces were not understood in number, the expectation was "To charge the enemy ranks to create a brawl in close contact, preferably with sun at your backs" this is what the M4s charging the Tiger 131 was supposed to represent doctrinal wise. Shermans were mostly running into Panzer 3 and 4s threw most of the theater, they ran across very few Panther's and Tiger tanks, Durring 1945 the Germans had sent a large chunk of Panthers and Tiger 2s to try and break the allied lines but were screwed over by not having luxury of time or fuel (And then the Allied advanced halted them by accident). So the most prolific destruction of allied armor in the Western Theater of Europe was anti tank guns and ambushes. This is why air superiority was so heavily required and focused on by the allied power as they could bomb bridges, destroy supplies, rappidly recon, and so much more. C.A.S. or Close Air Support could also be noted as people were keen to use aircraft to support attack waves, the problem was at speed identifying friendly tanks fast enough to strike only enemy tanks, and newer pilots were slow at this at peek war. People like to compair American tanks to German tanks statistically, but the fact is that American tanks fought more infantry then they fought tanks most of the time causing very low interest in upgrading Sherman firepower, often crews prefered the 75mm cause the HE payloads were stronger

@16:37 Something to keep in mind is that combat is messy like a German company that is equipped with a bunch of machineguns to cut down advancing allied infantry units might just throw all of it's anti-tank options (maybe a few guys with a couple launcher and rounds) at the first group of tanks they see either hoping the allies would assume they are an anti-tank element and/or tricking the allied forces into thinking they are stronger/bigger than they are then they are and have to divert more men and equipment to deal with a much smaller unit. Life is not like an RTS you can't take fire and then see "oh there is an enemy rifle squad there and an antitank squad there" You knida have to guess by what they hit you with and for how long which means the enemy also knowing this can fake attacks/defense and to throw you off.

Military Medical is a joke in all things, not just eyesight. I routinely got warnings for being "overweight". Due to the way they did neck and waist measurements, the charts always said I had 17% body fat. At the time I was 24 years old, was 6 ft in height and weighed 140 lbs. (That's 183 cm, and 64 kgs for my metric friends). My ACTUAL body fat percentage was around 2%. To say I was "overweight" was absurd, which I told them each and every time in great vitriol. Usually getting me a trip to see the Capt of the ship over my language to the medical officer. To be clear, the medics, or Docs, that actually fix us, and kept us alive are AWESOME!! The officers in charge of the bureaucracy of medical have their heads stuffed somewhere dark and stinky. Oh, and I cheated on my eye exam when I enlisted. I'm not vision impaired. I'm color blind, lol.

On the topic of whether or not he should have gone forward or backward in that fight: Range only really mattered for the anti-tank guns and/or enemy tanks. the panzerfaust he was mentioning is a HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) shaped charge so it doesn't care about range as long as it hits at the right angle. Basically a round like this explodes upon impact, forming a superheated plasma jet that burns through the armour and doesn't rely on any kinetic force. Typically they're pretty short ranged though due to accuracy, so the regular anti-tank guns are the ones you'd be more concerned about when it comes to range since they shoot a solid slug. The thing about a situation like that though is that you don't know what is hitting you in a tank like that. You don't know for sure what their effective ranges are, and you're so blind within a tank like that where you likely don't even know what is hitting you from where. This is where the training kicks in because you're trained to do something that may or may not get you and your buddies killed, but you still have a job to do regardless. You see in the clip where the infantry are lined up behind the tank? They're using the tank as mobile cover. The infantry have to get close enough to the enemy that they can do their job and you're basically a wall that moves and has a half decent gun on it. If you back up, your guys either get smooshed (They're called crunchies for a reason.) or they retreat, too, failing at your objective, or they're left without cover and die to the enemy because you ran away. Your objective is to take the territory the enemy is defending and the fact of the matter is that you're going to take losses no matter what you do. Another reason why retreating really isn't an option in an engagement like that is because going in reverse is super slow. 3 mph in reverse vs 24-29mph (4.8kph vs 38-46kph) going forward. Turning around to retreat exposes your significantly weaker side and rear armor to the enemy, making it even more likely to get killed.
