So glad to see this show getting more positive attention as of late. I was so sure I would hate it when it first got announced but I'm glad I buried my pride and gave it a chance because it quickly became my favorite iteration. Hope more people discover the show soon. :)

Whatever your opinion on the show may be, you cannot disagree it got treated unfairly. Cancelling it, while in production of its second season especially while the story was picking up, is blasphemy to say the very least. As a fan of the show, only now getting into it, I'm incredibly disappointed that it got this kind of treatment. Even WITH a movie (which in my opinion, the movie still ends up being phenomenal) it's still completely unfair.

This version is my favorite, hands down. The turtles are unique and fun, Splinter has a really neat backstory and is lovable, April is spunky as heck, the movie is probably the most amazing animated film I've ever seen and made me cry more than I care to admit... from start to finish, this series deserves all the love. It dared to be different and, oh, boy, is it a gem.

In your clip at 18:21 we see splinter naming the turtles and asks "how can I tell you apart?" (Even though they all look completely different) which of course leads to their bandanas, but it shows that when Splinter calls them by color instead of the names we know them as, it's not because of detachment or anything negligent like that, he's calling them by the names he gave them. (I doubt he went from "green, green #2" and giving them bandanas to differentiate them to giving them unique names. hes just not very good at naming things) it also suggests the turtles named themselves, or maybe even April named them.

It's like the color is their birth name, and then they changed it, but Splinter rarely used their new names (they didn't care either way) except near the end and the movie. The movie one was probably just so the new audience wasn't alienated.

@@sky_miss_y5500 I don't agree with the "real names" part, they have two real names. Blue, Red, Purple, and Orange are just as real as Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. One was given by their father, one was obtained through personal autonomy on their part. Splinter always uses their colored name because it was personal to him, he gave them those names. But he also knows these other names are important to them, and uses them sparingly to make an impact. It's like if your sibling always calls you by your middle name or another name/alias you go by, but after destroying something precious to you, they quietly use your full first name to grab your attention for an apology. It's not really a nickname.

Splinter calling Leo the leader, at the end of the series, honestly fit really well. Raph has heart and a sense of responsibility, which made him a really good fill-in for leader... but he absolutely sucked at everything that'd make a leader that is effective. The series showed that, as well as showing hints of Leo having the skills, talent, and awareness that'd transfer to excellence as a leader... It was just that he completely lacked the drive and responsibility necessary to use it that way. Like every other series Leo was the best leader of the turtles, but this time he just had some fatal flaws to work through first.

Rise of the TMNT kept me entertained and not depressed back in March of 2020 when the COVID lock down first happened, so it has a very special place in my heart! I sincerely hope the success of the movie will convince Nickelodeon higher ups that a third season is in order

Rise is like the transformers animated of the TMNT franchise, Hated at first because it wanted to do something different and because they had their own story they wanted to tell, Not to mention different art style, but overtime gained a following, I'm glad to see the series get the attention that it rghtfully deserved

I loved this Raph as leader but I also think Splinter saw Leo's potential to grow as a leader (after he planned everything at the battle nexus) and just wanted Raph to be the older brother without having to worry about leading them as well. I do like how the show showed how Leo had the potential but not the responsibility. Love this review and I'm so glad someone is talking about this show

2012 will always be my favorite considering the character development of the turtles was stellar and actually made them feel like… y’know, teenagers. But Rise is also great and people who hate on it is because they don’t enjoy change. The real winner here is kids though because they always get a new reiteration of the turtles with each generation.

I genuinely love this version. It’s refreshing how they switched things up in this instead of being repetitive with the storytelling and had a different villain besides Shredder and I thought the personality shifts in the turtles was actually a nice touch. And I liked how splinter was a dad figure first, sensei second. And you have to admit it’s adorable when they actually call him dad or pops instead of master or sensei. Now don’t get me wrong, I love most tmnt versions. But this one managed to be so relatable, entertaining and funny and yet still kick ass and be serious when it was necessary.

Love this version of TMNT!! I feel a lot of people missed the gradual progression of Leo’s character. It wasn’t out of left field that he’s given the leader role. He’s constantly proving himself as a planner and as the most gifted fighter.

Love your review and love that more and more people are talking about Rise. Maybe you can explain something for me though. People have been saying Leo and Donnie are twins. How is that possible when they're 2 different species of turtle? It sounds (to me anyway) like 2 humans with 2 completely separate parents being called twins.

Well, it’s more that they’re both canonically 14. It’s more of a fandom thing where they’re often referred to as the disaster twins. The idea most of the fans have is that Leo is the one who keeps saying they’re twins and Donnie would hate it but secretly enjoy it.

They are the exact same age (14), mutated (grew) at the same time, and all brothers are biologically Splinters so that helps. It was first a fandom thing but it's carried by Donnie and Leo mirroring each other like twins would: both have angular and long faces compared to Raph or Mike's more compact faces, they have the same proportions even though their species is different, usually they mirror each other in clothes (pajamas, board shorts preference) but not always (Leo doesn't wear hoodies often like Don, and Donnie doesn't wear T-shirts), they usually have a personal rivalry between them that nobody else in the show has (as someone with twin siblings, I see that a lot), and more but I'm scared if I look up the full lists people have listed I will lose all my progress I have typed here. 😅

They were born regular turtles and They had no memory of their lives as regular turtles (since they didn't know draxum or Lou jitsu) so it sounds like their ages and birth order were a conscious choice. It's not like Draxum hatched them all and told them this information.

It was probably safe to assume babies who spit and gurgle, can barely move even on fours like a turtle/toddler might be somewhere between 1 or 2 in human years. It also probably happened to Splinter that his mutation intensified as well alongside them (but not exactly like theirs, as he was humanoid to animal not animal to humanoid)?

I have never laughed so hard at one of these videos discussing this show than I have this one, you have a way with words and it makes this video so hilarious while also being interesting to watch! As someone who's a fan of all of the iterations and was introduced to TMNT through the 2003 iterations Rise has been my favorite above all of them for so many reasons, most of which are discussed in this video! thank you so much for making it! It was a blast to watch!

Agreed with everything you said, except for one thing! And that is what you were saying about Leo becoming the leader being just older fan service… I have to disagree for the most part! I think the series was hinting pretty much from the VERY BEGINNING that Leo was gonna eventually become the leader. Although Raph was a VERY GOOD leader, he breaks under too much pressure and sometimes doesn’t come up with very elaborate plans that are for sure to work and is sometimes a little…um-gullible? (Is that the right word?) But as for Leo, Yes, I am acknowledging that he goofs off too much and he gets his family into a lot of predicaments, but besides that-the show really does point out his leadership qualities! From being able to strategically plan out your opponent’s next moves-to being able to manipulate a person with his humor, (Yes, humor can actually be a weapon against your enemies! You don’t need to be serious to be able to outwit your opponent!) Leo has also stepped up as leader even when he didn’t know he was-as shown in many episodes where Raph is trying to come up with a plan-Leo always quietly adds/points out what their situation is and tells what the best solution would be, and then lets Raph take it from there with creating a plan. I think the episodes that best capture Leo being a very capable leader are “Bug Busters” and “Very Unhappy Returns…?” (Is that what the first episode of Season 2 is called? 🤔) And as for the things people say about how Leo doesn’t take things seriously enough-hence his jokes… I CALL RUBBISH! Leo only Acts like he doesn’t take things seriously-because that’s how he copes in stressful situations or confusion. (HE LITERALLY SAID in the VERY FIRST EPISODE and I quote: “What? I can’t crack a joke in the middle of the craziest event ever?! That’s how I cope!” (Don’t know if I got the quote Completely right, but I was close enough!) Unquote. Another thing to back me up is just the WHOLE RISE MOVIE! That movie gives us a CLEAR look into Leo’s character for the most part! I avoided this show for years until I saw that Mikaela Turkleson review. I watched a few episodes of it last year and I was hooked. The comedy, the heart and the drama were all so very good. She did warn the viewers of one thing though: 2010’s bad redemptions. Specifically, for Draxum.

@@cooldude3946 Probably, yeah. Being honest, I wasn’t a big TMNT fan growing up. When 2003 was around, I was a young child who had other series I really wanted to watch. 2012 came out when I was more into anime so I wasn’t really watching much Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network.

What was so bad about the redemption of Draxum?

@@zemox2534 Well, it primarily has fault with the emphasis on family in this iteration to the point that anything is forgiven immediately or incredibly overlooked. The biggest example being Mind Meld; the episode where Donnie coerces everyone to get a procedure where they think like him. An action he only rescinds when they act too much like him. Draxum falls in that issue that 2010’s storytelling had across the board; bad redemptions. Specifically when it comes to family. After his defeat and escape, Draxum is found by Michaelangelo who, convinced that Draxum is family because he mutated them, gives him an apartment and references for a job. I’m not going to go into the fact that there’s a few more deserving people to get that, but he tries to redeem Draxum due to 2 things. One is that he’s family and the other is this idea that everyone has to forgive him in order to move on. The other is that they would not be a family without the abuse he dealt unto them. Both ideas are honestly incredibly messed up. Both from the fact that, whilst they can take him down, Draxum is the most personal abuser the family has ever had with both of these ideas giving him some sort of power over them. And this is compounded by the fact that there is no one keeping an eye on him that could bestow any negative consequences. He literally strangled a child in broad daylight at work and practiced the mystical arts with Zero repercussions. Plus, like in Mind meld, characters that would be great opposers to him are often absent. In Mind meld, it was April and Splinter who would have definitely tried to stop Donnie. In Draxum’s episodes, based on the flashback episode aired literally before repairing the Baron, it’s the council’s double agent; Mayhem. Now, this could have been time constraints due to the episode cut but it is telling that such characters are not added into said stories.

Great video! Though I kind of disagree on the whole Hamato Yoshi/Splinter opinion. The original purpose of it in the comics was to highlight the cycle of revenge the Turtles came from (Yoshi defeated Shredder, Shredder killed Yoshi, Splinter train the Turtles to get revenge) and how they broke it. Having Splinter initially training them for revenge also brings some moral greyness to his character, and it would be cool to see at least one animated series explore and expand on that.

I can't understand how this show got any hate. The action is amazing, the characters are fun, and the humor is on point. This is the kind of show that should have taken off if handled by the studio better. If you want a version of the turtles that deserves hatred, then look no further than Michael Bay's TMNT.

I LOVE this version of TMNT, it's most certainly my favourite TMNT EVER! I love how Leo is shown to have his skillset from the get go, he's smart, he's observant and even when his family is panicking, you can see him looking for a solution, or a way out. Just because he wasn't the oldest (he's actually confirmed to be the 2nd oldest by the writers ) doesn't mean his skills just go away. I think thats why i enjoyed seeing the potential of his leadership, his analysing/ questioning some of his teams decisions, even if he goes along with most of them. Athough Splinter's decision miht have seemed out of the blue, it was nice to see how Leo had that potential from day one. Also, Mikey is my boi, my baby, my little sunshine~ Plus his Dr Delicate Touch is....AWESOME. Sometimes you just gotta yell.....I love it.

Another fan of both the movie and the series here. And I admit to bein just a little apprehensive at first, fearin it would be the Nick version of TTG once I heard it was goin the more comedic route. Thankfully that didn't stop me from watchin the first few episodes and formin my own opinions instead of just takin the word of the naysayers. And I've never been more grateful for doin so, as I would have missed out on my now favorite iteration of the TMNT. Though while I was and still am mad as hell at how Nick just up and pulled the plug, not even givin the second season a chance to finish I'm not too sure I wanna root for a revival. Too much probability of it endin up like Young Justice. As for the haters, barely pay attention to them. Mainly because I acknowledge that whatever shows, cartoons, video games, etc I like aren't for everyone. That and the fact that the majority of them are the same fun spoilin cry-babies that were outright scornful of the cgi series when it first aired and throughout most of it's run, only turnin around to sing their praises once it ended and Rise came onto the scene. Only time I start to take their negative criticisms personally is when they go out of their way to be an ass to fans, either callin us stupid and in need of professional help or gloatin over how 2012 lasted longer while Rise was cancelled. All in all, enjoyed the entirety of your take on ROTTMNT.

i enjoyed the video , i agree with some points and disagree with others I enjoyed the show , mostly the second season because it felt like in that season they found a better balance between the comedy and story , where i could enjoy the humour but also get invested into the story. In season one it felt like the slapstick was taking the forefront while the story was taking a backseat( which is ok ) but i could not get into it as much. The comedy can be pretty clever but some of the slapstick humour was used as a device to further the plot which sometimes took me out of the story . I do think that the concept of a story about Teenage mutant ninja turtles can embrace some camp but i also think that there can be too much camp. although the original mirage comics were a parody it was serious and subtle enough to take on its own identity to the point where it didn't to you out of the story (if that makes sense , i'm probably rambling , sorry ). Animation is spectacular , character acting is top notch , fight scenes amazing no question about it. The movie was amazing , great balance of heart , comedy and action. Animation was beautiful . It was a beautiful movie. Some other notes: I do think that other iterations of the TMNT , example :2003 and 2012 , did try new things. They kept the status quo but also added a new spin to it and i don't think it's fair to act as if Rise was the only different one and the others are basically the same. Rise did change a lot of things , which is refreshing but some changes while new i would not say were an improvement . I agree with you that like that the turtles and splinter being biologically related is a nice touch however i don't think them being related by blood automatically makes their relationship stronger or even better than other iterations . The 2003 series was heavily involved in mysticism , especially in the later seasons like season 5 to the point of the turtles turning into dragons but i prefer Rise's take , I just like it more , i could expand but i used up all two of my brain cell writing this . I do think if the show had gone on it would have taken a more traditional direction in its story with Shredder being the big bad and the addition Kraang, the addition of Casey Jones(both of them) and Leo become the leader.Maybe if episodes weren’t cut from the season we could have gotten a more fleshed out story of Leo becoming the leader (idk , i'm speculating ). if you took time out of your day to read this , thanks.Hope it made sense, hope i sound respectful.

People need to get rid of their bias nostalgia goggles and really be objective. Tell the same fans of the 1987 tmnt to rewatch the 1987 series again today. Im telling you, it's really cheesy and the animation doesn't hold up. And the turtles barely use their weapons for fighting. Their weapons are just for props. And this is coming from an 1987 TMNt fan myself. I grew up watching the turtles, they were my obsession during that time, but that's just it, it was an amazing franchise during that time. THE current tmnt is actually leagues better when it comes to animation quality and my goodness have you seen the movie? Being an artist myself I can make these observations. Props to whoever led the art direction of the series. My only gripe with the design are the turtles themselves, really wish they didn't stray too far off from the original design but that's subjective anyway and that's just my inner nostalgia influencing my opinion. I get they were trying to take note of the differebt kinds of turtle species. But iverall the current tmnt is not as bad as the 1987 tmnt fans make it up to be. And after watching the movie, I am definitely following this series and see where they go.

If I may add my two cents, it's this. I think part of what was kinda jarring about the incarnation for alot of people might be the fact that the pacing of this incarnation hits at around 100 mph, which makes kinda sense if you think of this as a Titmouse project were they returned to their Motorcity roots and that super rapid pacing I think undercuts what should be the more heartwarming/Dramatic bits for the audience to hang on. It probably didn't help that as this incarnation of the Turtles was coming off of the final sale of Mirage TMNT to Nick / Viacom, so after the 2012 series they needed to get one remake in that has that "We need that 25% to 50% difference so we get a greater piece of the merch sales" kinda deal. Hence the dumping of what you would consider the old standard villains and characters until the very end of the series, for a fresh new cast of heels to fight. In hindsight it's kinda a nice throwback to fun late 80's Archie / cartoon vibe where there was a new goofy mutant heel gimmick of the week.

I love the movie and the series, yes it may have some things people find uhh unlikeable. But I am always wondering if they are gonna put a season 3 or maybe not, Because people say that the movie is like a season 3 cut short, I just hope they will make a season 3

I'll be honest. There's going to be hate regardless of what incarnations out there. However, Rise of the TMNT is just one of the incarnation that is the second bashed on series. If fans doesn't like the series, people can't try to convince them otherwise. Rise isn't for me, it wasn't made for me just like anyone else. I enjoyed the Rise movie for what it was, however, it's not going to convince me or anyone else who doesn't care about the series and go watch it. I actually enjoyed The Next Mutation growing up. Yes it wasn't perfect and I'm sure there's others who actually enjoyed the series. let's just all respect the different incarnations of TMNT that people love and enjoy. because each one of these incarnations are not perfect. :)

Thank you for being at least polite about your opinion. I want people to take notes from you on how to actually give their humble opinion on a show. The thing with rise was that it got hated by the older fans to the point that most people ( including me) were afraid of watching the show. around a year ago, I decided to watch the show and it was no where nearly as bad as what people were saying it was. I, personally like 2003 more than any version of the boys however rise will probably become one of my faves just by how unique it is. The animation is gorgeous and the brotherly love is one of the best I've seen in a while form the turtles. It is quite sad that the show got cancelled....

i was a rise hater at first but then i gave it a chance and watched the first season and i liked. its not my favorite but i understand it and he is right it is like a tmnt show and it does make drastic changes but needed ones to refresh the franchise. i initially hated everything about this show but then i saw it wasnt like the others and i cant deride creativity if it is done out of a need to be creative rather then just money making. so this show gets the pass and though it doesnt want or need it. it has my seal of approval. the new weapons and special powers were a nice touch. the no dachi being the one i like the best

I would have less of a problem if Leo became the leader earlier in the show. Early on Leo is clearly a much better leader then Raph, he actually strategies and has a solid grasp of everyones abilities while Raph is just sorta a dumbass. Then Raph matures, Leo doesn't and their rolls are switched.

Combine that with the writing of the first few episodes and how it was advertised, it didn’t leave the best first impression. It's funny, because I have seen almost zero hate for this show. The only hate I've seen is the outrage when the show was first revealed and they showed the new turtle designs with new weapons and Raph being the leader. However, ever since it first aired I've seen nothing but people praising it. I, personally hate this show. I hate everything what people hated about the reveal and I hate the comedy. I mean, Donnie can be kinda funny, I guess, but it ain't no comedy gold or anything. When it first came out, I specifically remember criticizing the animation as it looked liked it was made in flash. I have since changed my opinion on this and I do believe this is some of the best animation in the turtles' franchise. That being said, I'm still shocked how much praise I've seen this show get, as I for one was expecting it to be heavily criticized due to how much the turtle's have had a complete personality shift. I am a firm believer of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." That's just my opinion though. Couldn't care less if anyone likes this show, as I like a lot of things that a lot of people may consider bad, when I think they're amazing.

In my opinion, is this the best TMNT show, HELL NO! But is it bad, no, not really, its good at times, but also sometimes I feel like they try to hard to be cool? I have mixed opinions on it, none of the jokes were THAT funny, but hey, TMNT never relied on that, but, what they do rely on, is characters. I like characters, again, development is not the best. But, I've seen worse, overall, I rate the show a 7.5/10. If you're an OG TMNT fan, and want to watch this, why not. But I don't think its close to as better as the 1987 and 2003

Donatello didn’t have a stick he has a bow staff it’s actually quite powerful but I do agree that making it a tech of staff makes more sense. By far I like this iteration of Donatello the most I don't care for this April she's annoying and they should be able to kick her ass xD. Ninjas is what they are suppose to be it's the draw of the show. As per making Leo the leader nah, that was doing the show right. Change is fine but drastic change is never a good thing. Splinter had a personality but that isn't always a good thing in Rise. That's not splinter and you need an adult in the room. Splinter was always a father even an adoptive one I don't see how it lowers the stakes if he is not blood related.

It is usually Rafael that is antagonistic with Leonardo. He did have a personality he was serious and stoic and the best fighter and the most disciplined of the four. Yes he can make jokes and in 1987 he did but that’s always been his character the firstborn as it should be I do agree that could add a little bit more depth but making him a complete jokester that’s a bit off the mark.

It's honestly hit and miss to me. Like parts are fun, but at the same time it feels like it's either trying too hard or its way over the top. I like April, Raph, and Mikey in this, but I can't stand Leo, Don, or Splinter. Also the animation feel like overkill more often than not.

It's only underrated for fans of this animation style. I can't stand it. Trigger has gained this huge following for this style animation. People enjoy what they enjoy🤷. I personally don't like it at all. It feels soulless and it disconnects me from the story and the media. I love hand drawn animation. I can feel the atmosphere and the passion in the details and flaws. With this, that feeling is nonexistent. They are doing this with the new Trigun and the cyberpunk anime being released. The fact that the following seems so big has me worried about the future of animation. But as a grown man who has enjoyed and still enjoys animation, I accept the fact that people view things on a multitude of levels and it is what it is.
