Thank you. Very helpful information. It is really helpful when someone post videos, to show the settings beside the photos. As a beginner, that is helpful in understanding what works, does not work. Thank you.

So glad i found out about bbf only 3 months after taking up photography just 3 years ago, i also set and forget the metering mode to matrix and only use single point AF. As for picture style i created my own in the user option, i think because i named it auto it uses the contrast, hue and saturation settings part of the auto preset but my sharpness, finess and threshold settings and it shows in the menu with brackets as (auto)

Great video! I think you are working too hard. 🤠If you setup your picture profile like rolls of film, shoot in raw and then use the Nikon software to export your raw photos to tif files, you will preserve all of the picture profile settings and likely don't need to globally edit anything. Lightroom can't read the picture profile info from the raw file, which is why you have to use the camera software. I use the white balance to manipulate the warmness/red in my photos. I like using filters to balance my exposure. (The Kase Armour filters have been a blessing). I have my landscape picture profile setup so photos look like they were shot on velvia 50 film. I have come to dislike editing. I'd rather be out shooting and spend as little time as possible in front of a computer. This process works for me. By ignoring the picture profile settings, most people are only getting about half of the capability of their camera. All of that said, everyone should use a workflow that brings them fulfillment and enjoyment. Cheers! 🍺

Nice rundown, Mike. A nice camera setup primer for many situations. Love that bayou image. Is that tree in Patagonia the some one that Chris and Thomas Heaton shot? Just wondering. Carry on! 👍🥂

I'm using bbf and I leave my camera in AF-C. With bbf I just hit the button once to focus as if I'm in AF-S. If I need continuous focus I just hold the button down. It's another reason to use bbf because you don't have to switch back and forth between the two in the settings.

I set back button focus on AF-L. But now how do I use AF-L?
@PereaPhotography
@PereaPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
It would be the same way as AF-ON. It depends on your focus mode. You’ll have to decide whether to you AF-S, or AF-C. Then use the AF-L button as your focus button. In AF-S, you hold down the AF-L button until it focuses, then your are free to let go and shoot. If it’s in AF-C, you can hold the AF-L button down and the camera will continue to find focus. This would be great for wildlife/sports, but you can also use it for landscape photography.

@@PereaPhotography Thanks but I am still confused. If my back button focus is now assigned to the AF-L button (it is) don't I lose the AF-L (Lock) button functionality? Normally you would focus using the shutter button. I assume that they have a completely separate AF-L button for a reason. I use mostly AF-S. I haven't used it before- I thought it was to LOCK the focus point e.g., if I move it off to the side or something. I am really not sure but appreciate your knowledge.
@PereaPhotography
@PereaPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@MOAB-UT technically yes you lose the Autofocus Lock function of you are using it as a back-button focus. In a way. With the traditional AF-L function, as long as you hold the button down, the focus stays locked. But when you remove the focus function from the shutter button and use AF-L instead, you can lock focus once with AF-L(in AF-S mode) and let the button go, and the focus won’t change when you press the shutter. The camera will only refocus again if you press the AF-L button.

@@PereaPhotography Thanks- still not quite getting it but that's ok. Not sure how this is any different than just focusing using the shutter button. Seems exactly the same. Hit AF and it usually does keep that focus if you are in AF-S mode. I thought AF-L had more to do with WHERE the focus dot stays e.g., "Locking" it out to the right side of the frame or wherever I put it. I guess I will have to experiment. I am a newbie obviously. Seems like a simple concept- maybe I just need more coffee. Thanks for trying to educate me about this. I "LIKED and SUBSCRIBED!"

When your cameras AF-L button is set for BBF the focus is LOCKED when you release the button. Before setting it up you would have to focus with the shutter release button then press the AF-L button to lock the focus. Now, with AF-L set to BBF you just press it to focus and when you release it your focus is LOCKED.
