In regards to the game, have that more unprecedented twist that may better work for him... That intrigue which cogs ours for a long while... Toby succeeded thus far with that true, in more ways then two. For all of the BS bestowed as of late... If it knicked my knack with actual sub-conscious imbued metaphysical hopes from the suffering of our daily outside world's tribulations?... I say Toby still did a FINE JOB since... Toby made it so, SO FAR since... Aspiring others even unknowably or unknowingly. I say the time given is necessary... It's not 6-7+ years of TF2 delays of course (let's hope it doesn't go there, I had quite enough stagnation already, for one day XD).

This was a really interesting and thorough video. It's been a LONG ass time since I last read Homestuck, but it is a very important part of the creative DNA in Toby's work. Megalovania is interesting in that it originated in the Halloween Hack, but its most prolific pre-Undertale use was Homestuck, before its association with UT eclipsed it by virtue of UT becoming so popular. Something else I find striking is how The Door/The Chase are also evocative of his track, Nightmare Knight. I wonder if that means Nightmare Knight has traces of penumbra in it. I'd have to really listen in to say with certainty, but it just crossed my mind as I had noticed the similarities the two DR tracks and Nightmare Knight, and he's reused older musical ideas like Noisemaker's theme.

Hi! As someone who's also been researching the song in the past year, i feel the need to give my take on some of the things in this video. A lot of the misnformation around this song relating to Deltarune comes from posts that I've made in late 2023 (if you've heard "Penumbra is the song from the sea", the _only_ evidence from that comes from one of my posts. ). I don't know any formal music theory, but I've been making music for ~5 years at this point. This is gonna be a bit harsh because I'm only pointing out stuff I think is incorrect, but to be clear, I appreciate that you made a long video on this! Ok, so: 10:25 : AT SHADOWS EDGE tumblr post and "The edge of the shadow" Twitter post being connected. Think about it like this 1) IF tumblr post & twitter post are connected, 2) AND twitter post is 100% related to deltarune, 3) THEN the tumblr post must also refer to deltarune. But, there's one assumption here that isn't 100% confirmed; #2, that the twitter post relates to Deltarune. Up until Penumbra theory got popular, it was generally accepted in this DR fandom that “The edge of the shadow” _had_ to refer to Deltarune, because what else would it be referring to? But the knowledge of Penumbra actually puts that into question. Point is, it's possible for the tumblr & twitter post to be connected, yet neither relates to Deltarune. It definitely could be related, but it's not airtight. 10:35 "The edge of the shadow" wasn't Toby's first tweet, it's just the earliest standalone one that hasn't been deleted 11:53 About "Phantasm is referring to the song itself" I can't say I agree. It didn't make it into Null, but it was always planned to appear in Homestuck. If Toby had lower standards, it probably would've appeared in 2010 or 2011. He also planned to release Penumbra in Homestuck Vol 10 (2016, after undertale's release), at which point the "phantasm" name wouldn't mean anything. I think Phantasm probably has some other meaning. My personal theory is that it's a Touhou 7 reference. 7 is Toby's favorite game in the series, Yukari (from the same game) is his favorite _character_ in the series, and Yukari is the boss of the Phantasm stage. 13:59 Ok, regarding Doctor... I do wish people would note the difference between it and Penumbra. Really glad you made that distinction! But...while i'm pretty sure this is an unpopular opinion, I definitely still think that the 6-note phrase you played can be taken as "Penumbra". Doctor was clearly used as a branching off point, but the latter two notes of the phrase aren't the same. This 6-note phrase is used heavily throughout Umbral Ultimatum. Just based on the name, UU is clearly related to PP, yet UU doesn't use any of the 2 more-original motifs in Penumbra. Toby also said that Penumbra is at the end of Descend, which has that 6-note motif. (I do understand where you're coming from though.) 17:34 I'm still ehhhh on THE HOLY, but a lot of people who know music theory seem to believe it. so idk 19:06 I feel pretty confident in saying, that's not My Castle Town / Legend. Musically, you can get a lot more similar than what's going on here. 21:27 The Door: the kalimba recreation isn't accurate. The Door is going (G F# B D#), while Penumbra (Doctor) is doing (G F# A F#). Notably, Penumbra's 4th and 2nd notes are the same note, whereas they're different in The Door. I also don't really see a connection in the 2nd part of The Door 23:42 I also don't hear Penumbra in freedom at all, so I can't say much for this part of the video. 28:21 Ooh this part. I've seen this mentioned so often, but I'm 100% sure that this isn't OUaT. The relevant portion is at 3:12 of that YT video of Penumbra (Piano), right? The lower piano notes there. What people always miss is that, that motif actually starts a little earlier into the song at 3:02 . 3:02 plays its melody, then this melody is elaborated upon when it comes in again 10 seconds later. Here's a note transcription: Once Upon a Time: [F1 - F2 - C2 (gap) A#1 F2 F1 (gap)] 3:02 of Penumbra (Piano): [B1 - A1 - B1 - D2 - B1 (gap) D2 (gap) E2] 3:12 of Penumbra (Piano): [B1 - A1 - B1 - D2 - B1 - D2 - E2 - D2 - A1 - B1 - F#1 - D2] It's hard to notate music in a text comment, but you can play these notes in a DAW, or on a digital piano website. OuAT does 3 notes, then a gap, then 3 more notes, then a gap. The structure of the lower notes in Penumbra is entirely different. It's hard to make out the notes when just listening to 3:12 , but if you listen to 3:02 beforehand you can easily pick out the first 5 notes, which are identical. From there, it's easy to hear the entire phrase. I made a video demonstrating this, but I think youtube filters links in comments, and I don't want this to get deleted... 33:43 I don't hear Doctor in CORE, or The Door either. 36:26 The Baby is You isn't in SWSH, there's a marcy nabors tweet that directly deconfirms this. (I still can't post links, but let me know and I can DM you the link for this!) 45:27 i agree with this whole portion about Homestuck, hope more ppl get into it! I've recently been seeing an uptick in DR fans checking out the comic after so many people have talked about penumbra, which is nice

Like it's worth noting, rules about music can be flexible. The biggest counterpoint for me saying "castle town isn't in Penumbra" is if you compare "sans" to "It's Raining Domewhere Else". Everyone agrees that those two share a leitmotif, but the actual structure of the notes is pretty different. So yeah. Penumbra Phantasm sounds like it's heavily inspired by ZUN's Touhou songs: in particular, some of the leitmotifs sound similar to Suwa Foughten Field (Yasaka Kanako's theme) and Necrofantasia (Yakumo Yukari's theme). Yasaka Kanako is the final boss of the tenth Touhou game, Mountain of Faith (2007): its main setting is Youkai Mountain, a mountain teeming with monsters and the like. Yakumo Yukari is the Phantasm Stage boss of the seventh game, Perfect Cherry Blossom (2003). Notably, the Phantasm Stage is like an "extra-extra" boss stage, and this is the only time this occurs in the series thus far. She is a youkai who manipulates borders, and one of the main propogators of the Great Hakurei Barrier. It's a magical border that separates the main setting of Touhou, Gensokyo (literally Land of Illusions/Fantasy) and modern Japan. It makes sense, since the Touhou boom was happening between the late 2000s to the early 2010s, and Toby's a big fan of Touhou. Thought this would be interesting to share!

wow, this is a very nicely put together video. You really opened my eyes to the potential of this song's theorycrafting potential. I actually do have knowledge of music theory, and this video has inspired me to formally analyze these songs to see how compelling the quotes really are. I have seen many Deltarune theories, but it's been long since I genuinely 100% disagreed with one. The music section was the most interesting to me but it convinced me I genuinely can't recognise any of Penumbra in Deltarune songs.

17:00 I know people have been correcting you a lot but this bugged me and i NEed to spread my autistic hyperfixation. Also, yes I study composition/music theory and orchestration but this is not super technical. A leitmotif is not specific, a motif is. A motif is a musical idea with set orchestration, tempo, harmony, etc. A leitmotif is just that but less. you can reharmonize, change tempo, change rhythm even, but the core of the motif it stems from stays the same. Leitmotifs serve to bring back ideas or memories from previous moments in whatever form of story you’re telling. They can’t be specific because music is by its very nature the most abstract art form. the reason there’s a connection between Toriel and Asgore in the motif is because they share the same feeling of reluctance/confliction in harming you but they also know they have to. yes they are related characters but that’s moreso related to the themes both Dreamurrs share.

I’m at the very beginning of Act 6, and it’s been an insane ride so far! Even if nothing comes of this connection (which as you’ve just proven is *highly* doubtful) I’m glad it got me to check out Homestuck!

I love the narrative behind the whole connections between the old tweets, tumblr posts, and dark worlds seeming to fit the description perfectly and a decades long conspiracy of hidden lore to uncover... I do hope this is true, but I genuinely can't hear it at all in half of the songs you are claiming here. I do think there's SOMETHING up with The Holy, but to be honest, I only ever have felt it half matched, or just had a similar vibe as the part people talk about in Penumbra Phantasm, I can't hear it as a note for note match. Maybe there's something funny going on with the music theory that's beyond my understanding and it is in fact a match but it just seems just close enough to have started this theory, and yet just far enough to leave doubts. I feel like this is one of those theories where the vibes of it are immaculate and the coincidental things around the edges point to it just enough to get excited over it, but the core evidence just isn't there yet, if it will be at all. I also am going to push right back on your claim as to what you think will be the culmination of Penumbra Phantasm if it is indeed intended to be referenced. I straight up do not think we will be fighting Gaster at any point in Deltarune, weird route or normal route. His status as a background character who seemingly had a hand in setting up events we see and the whole previous mystery of him in Undertale creates a character who is written to stay in the shadows and that sort of character, the less you reveal about them the more intriguing they are. The whole mystery of Gaster and his true nature ends up being cheapened if he's just another boss fight to overcome, just another enemy you get to encounter. Mind you I don't think Gaster has to stay this level of obscure forever, and I do think we will get payoff for his mysteries and learn more about him and his motives but I think assuming we will get all the answers or even get to meet him in person let alone fight him are all a stretch that just can't be justified by current evidence. On top of that, I don't feel like Gaster is evil or antagonistic, or even necessarily capable of fighting us if he is in fact in a state of being "shattered across time and space". If anything I think we're supposed to be HELPING him not fighting him, as he called us into the game in the first place. This doesn't rule out him being antagonistic to the player's actions in a weird route playthrough, but I find the idea of Kris or Susie becoming antagonistic more convincing than Gaster doing so in that scenario. I guess I can't say in good faith that I think a Gaster fight is IMPOSSIBLE, but I think it's a fandom wishlist item that contradicts Toby's intentions for the character.

One thing I do want to add is that since we're getting two new chapters next year I think the debate should be settled once and for all when they are out. I think it's super implausible that it would be a motif Toby is building up to be so important yet would not show up in two out of 7 chapters if it is indeed so important, so 3 and 4 should also have obscure references to it in them. With only 2 chapters to go on now it's easy to see things as just coincidental but 4 chapters to analyze will give us some real ability to see patterns forming.

Good video! I can tell you put a lot of effort into this. Homestuck really is such a good webcomic and I hope your video introduces more people to its huge catalogue of music. I must note however, that many of your examples of Penumbra Phantasm in songs do not really line up. If you were to compare the motifs you are talking about by laying the melodies next to each other (think of what Andrew Cunningham did in his "Everything About Gaster's Motif in the DELTARUNE Soundtrack" video) it becomes apparent that many motifs, for example "The Door", consist of different notes. This leaves the only similarity between motifs to be that they consist of notes that are on the same intervals as each other, which is a very common thing in any piece of music that happens all the time by virtue of there just being so much music. I think this is a very common thing people misconstrue about Toby Fox motifs. Many of his motifs that people claim are the same might much more likely be coincidences stemming from Toby's use of common and convenient phrases. When making music, you very often end up reusing stylistic elements from other songs because there are so many songs and some phrases are just more common. For example, the notes in the motifs from "Baby Legend" from The Baby Is You and the intro to Pokémon's "Battle Tower" theme have similar intervals but are still wholly different melodies. This repetition of notes is just a very common phrase which makes it very likely that Toby just wrote the "Battle Tower" theme without realizing this similarity to a previous song of his. Some even claim that "Terezi's theme" from the Alterniabound album is in "Your Best Nightmare" from Undertale, which at first listen seems true, but when looking into it you see that the motif is similar at most and is differentiated by the end of the motif, where it is wholly different. Here, what people call a motif is again a very common phrase of notes in a descending pattern that most likely just happened by accident. Remember that Toby writes a lot of music and often does so via improvising on his piano so he might just have been fucking around in a common phrase and built something off of that. This leaves many of the "penumbra appearances" to be mismatches. However, I still think Toby's mentioning Penumbra Phantasm ("The edge of shadow, where reality and dream meet.") could be proof that it will be used in Deltarune in some way, yet because of there not being any direct match of the motif I'd find it much more likely if he reworked the Penumbra motif into something slightly different. Toby thought the song was not up to his standards in 2010/2011. Ever since, the last time he blatantly incorporated the motif into anything was 2011 with "Umbral Ultimatum" in Homestuck vol. 6. As such, the song and motif might sound very different right now that we're 13 years (!!!) further. Anyways, thank you for the video. Keep up the good work!

Just finished watching this monster of a video! fantastic work! also congrats on finishing this massive project. Sorry in advance for the lengthy comment. While I've already penumbrad my phantasms in the past and knew a lot of these things beforehand, there were so many little things I never knew about. Especially relating to homestuck. Im definitely gonna check out some more songs from there. And maybe, who knows? I might even try the webcomic itself now, daunting as it may seem. I absolutely dont think sharing knowledge about penumbra is gonna "ruin" it in any way for anyone! I think the more people know of this deeply foreshadowed masterpiece, the more impactful it will be when it DOES eventually play. Like, i daydream about what its gonna feel like playing the final boss like on a daily basis. How i will be absolutely hyperventilating the SECOND i hear those first few notes and realise "this is it. Its finally happening!". The moment when all the puzzle pieces click together and my mind will melt into yolk. like, this scale of buildup to a future event like this is a once in a lifetime thing to experience and so will be the eventual payoff. It would be kinda sad to see players that would get to something like penumbra and just be like "oh, another cool toby fox song" instead of, well... this. I hope many people find this video so that they can have the once in a lifetime chance to hype themselves up and experience the full payoff when the time comes. The clues may be hidden, but that just makes them all the more rewarding to those who have found them. whether it be through their own research, or through this video. This is gonna sound very silly but im actually a little scared that deltarune might actually release fully some day. The thought that all this excitement, anticipation, theorising, daydreaming, etc... might one day come to an end? Holyy. I would be lying if i said i don't feel any sort of dread thinking about it. I have dipped my toe into homestuck every now and again, but I realized what im missing now a days is knowledge of just where the narrative and fandom are at. id love to actually finish reading homestuck proper and play the friendsim games I got but never played , but with just how much cursory info i lack it feels a bit daunting. Aside from that idea I loved this video! AN HOUR LONG DEEP DIVE INTO ONE OF MY FAVORITE TOPICS!! warning: im gonna ramble >:] i’m a fan of both homestuck and deltarune, and i MIGHT have an obsession with the homestuck soundtrack and toby fox music anyway here is my theory: i agree with you that the final boss is going to be Gaster. basically, i think the theme will include these motifs: -Penumbra Phantasm, including the Doctor leitmotif (i’ve theorized this for a while, but this video convinced me 100%) -Freedom motif (could possibly represent Gaster’s connection to Jevil, Spamton NEO, & other secret bosses yet to come) -Gaster’s Theme -possible reference to an undertale track?? 👁️ -that leitmotif that appears literally everywhere in the deltarune soundtrack (Don’t Forget) another part of my theory is that the final battle will take place where the character in deltarune is created when you first start playing (the vessel). that place could possibly be somewhere in between the light and dark world (penumbra 🤔). i could be completely wrong though lol one more additional comment: i appreciate that you added commentary on other homestuck songs. i rarely find videos discussing the hs soundtrack in detail :0

You'll notice that the majority of the songs used in this video were Homestuck tracks, and that's for primarily two reasons- 1: Almost every Deltarune video essay I listen to is full of Deltarune music and I wanted to give viewers a little break from that, and 2: Homestuck music is GOOD and more people should be listening to it period. Genuinely so sad I couldn't find some excuse to put Game Bro in here somewhere
