Coltrane's solo always sound very sophisticated, yet, complicated to my ears, which, mostly I couldn't catch anything at all. I just know about this Coltrane pattern first time in this video; many mysteries solved here, explained clearly step by step about how to practice it. I should work on this. Thank you so much, Søren! *... And I really feel motivated when you said in 9:37 ".... and just play one 💯 times 😊"

Coltrane changes and patterns can be very complicated, but again it is only music. I am so happy that you can use my material and see how the patterns are usable for you. Thank you for your inspiration to me. Questions are really welcome :) Feel free to join my facebook group for more info. facebook.com/groups/sorenballegaardsaxophonelessons/?ref=share All the best, Søren

In reality, the pattern 1-2-3-5 works well over any type of chord, whether ascending or descending (5-3-2-1), just lowering the 3rd in a minor chord, or the 5th in a diminished chord… The pattern 1-3-4-5, however, is more problematic: it works well over any type of chord only when descending (5-4-3-1), as this places 5 and 3 on the downbeat. When ascending… it works only with minor chords because the 4 (no chord tone) lands on the downbeat, and in addition in major chords it would clash with the major 3rd. To emphasize the chord tones (regardless of the type of chord), I would suggest, for example: • Ascending: 1-2-3-5 • Descending: 5-4-3-1 You can, of course, also start from the third: • Ascending: 3-4-5-7 • Descending: 7-6-5-3

Thats a great sum up. You are of course free to use any and all patterns on any and all chords. It's all a matter of taste. Also when you turn around the patterns and mix them up. 1532, 3125 etc there comes other sounds out. Thanks for pitching in, it's very valued.

@ Bergonzi-Coltrane permutations… With 4 notes, there are 24 combinations; with 5 notes, 120 combinations… I also wanted to point out that the pattern 1-2-3-5 is more versatile and is even present in Bach’s music. By the way, excellent tenor saxophone timbre!

Hi Søren, thanks for the video, very good breakdown and incredibly useful. I have a question -- why did you omit the Coltrane pattern from the 7th for the dominant chord (F G A C for G7)? is it because of the C?
@sorenballegaardmusic2 ай бұрын
Great question, and you are a good observer. The FGAC pattern is Dm7 - Dm from the 3rd. And yes you can use this on G7 but it's not really G7, it's Dm. So subdominant. That's why, but to get the dominant you can play FGAB. But you do not get the 1235 effect. And what we should do is play what sounds good, not more not less. So much in just one pattern hahaha. Love your comment. Please keep asking if anything

Great lesson. Thank you ! I have also seen the minor Coltrane pattern as 1-2-b3-5 as well. I think the 1-b3-4-5 sounds better. Also, the 1-2-b3-5 wouldn’t work over the upper structures. Thanks again

Hi Brian, thank you for the compliment. You are totally right about the patterns. I think that both the patterns are great. If you explain this from the major scale you see that building up the patterns are 1235 and 1b345 because else you get the 4th degree in there. If you follow what I mean. But this is such a big topic, amazing possibilities. Thanks again. :)

Listen to ”workin with the Miles Davies quartet” You hear Coltrane but not as he became, he’s not ”ready” in this album. But you can hear What’s about to come.

Totally agree - cooking relaxin, workin, steaming - Coltrane sounds amazing and indeed hints of the "new" sound. maybe I should a video on one of his solos from one of these albums - a solo analysis!
