Do you think any other attack can challenge jab’s title of the move important move?
@29once2 ай бұрын
I think throw comes close, you need something that beats blocking (jab or any other strike) to get the strike/block/throw trio. I say close because you can have a game with no blocking that was all spacing, or a game with no throws where you beat blocking with high/low attacks or a guard break/chip on block mechanic, but not a game without strikes.

Blocking, no matter how good your offense is your defenses are as equally important. They come in a variety of ways from staying calm and collect, knowing when to block, how to block incoming attacks, and determining what to block in specific situations.

I was thinking about a poke. These can take different forms, but in the end, a game with only jabs would be boring, but a game with only pokes would be at least somewhat engaging.

Personally I think it's the Hadouken, I remember seeing SF2 in arcade as a child and seeing my older cousin doing it when I could not thinking it was magical like a super secret technique that made SF2 stand from everything else in the arcade at the time

I knew it!! The first thing that came to my mind was the fireball but then 3D fighters exist so I bet on it being the jab

Jabs, my beloved. Glad to see someone else that appreciates these unsung heroes of fighting game design
@eduardoserpa16822 ай бұрын
Good to see jabs getting some love. Never had I felt how huge they were until the first season of GG Strive, when some characters simply didn't have a move fast enough to mash from throw protection, and those 1-2 extra frames made all the difference. Same goes for mashing out of blockstring gaps.

The most important move is blocking. Removing jab changes some fundamentals. Removing blocking, completely changes how any fighting game is played.

This actually makes me appreciate the Melty Blood's reverse beat a lot more. I already liked it, but this also highlights how FB sort of flipped the usual structure on its head, while still managing to balance the risk/reward factor.

I was really hoping you would say jab. It fundamentally changes all parts of a game's design and how it tackles different elements.
@DSKBR5562 ай бұрын
I expected you to say DP and was thinking it was jab. I was pleasantly surprised this wasn't clickbait. The speed/range/nature of the fastest attack defines games to their core.

Tbh its probably sweep, or throw, given that the transition from neutral to advantage/disadvantage that a knockdown state provides is the heart of fighting games.

I'll make sure that my characters not only have good jabs, but to make sure that they look just as good as well. I want all of my characters jab to be different in some way as starting point of building their own moveset.

The most important move in FG history is Terry Bogard.

You right about the thing about what the game designers want to achieve, look at Little Mac in Smash Ultimate, he is a boxer, and Nintendo wanted us to get a feel for that, so thats why he has a FRAME 1 jab and most of his other moves come out really fast, are strong, and have SUPER ARMOR ON SMASH ATTACKS! But he sucks in the air because in boxing, jumping, even though its dumb as hell to do, its still legal in a match, but jump attacks are illegal, and thats why he's not that good in competitive

I disagree strongly on the dismissal of hadoken and dragonpunch. I agree with jab. I would promote these five as defining. Jab, you need a baseline attack. Block, you need a way to stop an attack. Grab, you need a way to stop a block. Right so that seems to dismiss hadoken and dragon punch however...... Hadoken, this redefines fighting games by allowing a continious and long range threat to be present the game is not purely positional outside melee. Dragon punch, a counter to jump ins allows a huge variety of aerial maneuvers, once a game has a real functioning jump it needs a dragon punch, or the dragon punch allows a functioning jump. Strip these two and it might look like a fighting game but it plays entirely different. At the very least these define a SF2 clone, which most fighting games, so much so that their absence or weakness in an engine is notable.
