The best way I can describe Hindemith's music is that it's very "bracing," like getting a really good, vigorous massage. You're a bad influence, Dave, because even though I have loads of Hindemith recordings, I'd never gotten these box sets. They're on order now, though! I got to hear "Der Schwandreher" (a favorite) live with a local community orchestra a few years ago, and it was a thrill (and never realized from the recordings how small the accompanying orchestra is). I hope one day to get to hear live the concerto for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and harp, another favorite: unlikely, but I can hope. He works the Mendelssohn wedding march into the last movement in a delightful way.

Who did you order from?

@@steveschwartz8944 I found them on Amazon, but not all from Amazon directly.

@@steveschwartz8944 From Amazon, but I don't know that Amazon is fulfilling any of the order directly. I think they are all coming from third parties.

@kenjohnson1305 I found two of the boxes on Amazon. The rest appeared to be individual discs, many of them MP3s. I'll start looking for other sources. However, I thank you for taking the time to respond.

I must be one of many that's been thinking of getting these cpo Hindemith box sets and after watching your reviews, gone ahead and purchased because they suddenly seem less easy to get. I missed my original outlet, they sold out before I clicked buy. I did manage to get them, including the string quartets but through several different sellers and one of them second hand. At least they're on the way to me now. Your review as definitely had a effect.

Thrilled that you highlighted this brilliant composer who is so unreasonably neglected. I did not know about this series, and have now duly ordered all three sets. Love your comments about modern organ music - so true. Messaien was my gateway into really appreciating this instrument.

Thank you so much for reviewing these awesome works. These are top notch, can't ask for anything better. I also love his string quartets by the Auryn Quartets on the same CPO label.

Great music, all! One correction: Brain’s recording of the Horn Concerto was with Hindemith conducting.

I honestly think Hindemith is the most underrated composer of the 20th century. I do not get it I think he deserves so much more. It’s very German smart music that has soul.

I'm definitely getting these after your enthusiasm.

I think the complete quartets by (modern) quatuor Amar could also be featured in this series, such amazing works.

That's a set I'll be grabbing. Can't go wrong with Hindemith! Well, I guess those operas don't grab me -- but the rest of it is grand!

The timing of the clarinet concerto is wrong on the cover and booklet! It's in four movements of altogether 23'38", if I have counted right. One thing that is sadly missing in this set is his lovely Concertino for trautonium and string orchestra! A really cool piece for a very versatile and expressive electronic instrument, which sounds like a mixture of horn, saxophone and synth! There is only one good recording, from 1971 with Oscar Sala, and that must be quite hard to get on CD, if it exists at all...
