Great lesson, and a great choice of tune to work on. The other piece of advice for all jazz trombonists if they really want to learn: listen to JJ Johnson. I think JJ is just as important a musician as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, or many other elite names in jazz history. However, he is not as well known as those names. But he was every bit a master as Charlie and Miles and Trane were, in my opinion. Even if you're not a trombonist, JJ should be on your study list.

My learner band has this in it's set, and we're gigging on Sunday. Nice timing Shawn. Thank you 👍

Very nice video. Really, the major pent with a flat 3rd is just part of the Dorian scale which works quite well with blues.

Shawn, you are a great teacher. You've opened up Work Song for me, a tune I've always liked. Now I have to hit the woodshed.

Thanks! The diffuser is 100% for show. I'm not convinced it is helping my audio too much, but it does look cool.

Really enjoyed this lesson on one of my all-time favorite sons. I am playing bass and working on soloing it really helps that the music is written in bass clef.

That alteration of the major pentatonic is brought up in Persichettis 20th century harmony as the “Kumoi” pentatonic. I’ve also heard it referred to as the coltrane pentatonic, tho that’s technically different since you’d play that from the b9 of whatever chord you’re on, but it’s the same intervals.

Thanks for sharing. I figured there must be a name for that scale. The "sound" is so common, I couldn't imagine it had never been labeled in a formal way.

It's nice to learn from great musicians online. There is so much learning material but these musicians NEVER post their own original music, unless it's heavily mixed and mastered for spotify. Thanks for sharing real music that is also very enjoyable to listen to. And of course, great lesson.

Nice lesson - thanks! Going forward would it be possible to have a version of video with violin clef - for people that play instruments other than trombone. I play guitar and I read bass clef but much slower than violin one.

I don't play trombone, I play guitar. Doesn't matter, this is all useful stuff that I learn from.👍 (might be nice if it was written in treble clef as well as bass clef though)

Why isnt tenor trombone written in the same key as tenor saxophone? With that Bass C for trombone so much you play is above the highest bar line. If you set it same Bb as Tenor everything is read much more easily? They're both tenors.

On the classical side of things, trombone has been primarily written with non-transposed music. There are several different clefs (alto, tenor, bass) that are often used especially in older music, however, these are all in C. I have always assumed that because of this tradition, trombone is written in C. From my own perspective, I wish all instruments were just written in C and changed clefs as needed to reflect where the notes are on the piano.

@@ShawnBellMusic Yeah that would probably be the best idea. Recently I bought a book from a guy that wrote down all the Skatalites tunes but when I received it in the mail I discovered it was all written down in Guitar C (or something). 2 halves lower than Bb it looks like on paper. Once I figured that out I could read it and the notes don't go that far above the 5th line. It's just that Bass C for trombones can get ridiculous if you play notes that are not hard to play at all and they are on the 3rd line above the 5th line or so. I get a bit note dyslectic from it.

Not more are blessed with music in their heads. Most sound like practicing on stage. That’s why never liked M. Brecker and all of his followers.
