It’s so ironic that this video popped up today! I’m a retired certified welder that spent 41 years fabricating and repairing things using blueprints and mechanical drawings. Yesterday, I bought a set of plans off Etsy for a wood project my niece asked me to build. When I started going over the computer generated drawings I was surprised to see cut angles on 2x4 ends that read 100, 110, 120 etc.. In every case over my career, those angles would be shown as how many degrees off of 90 they were. On these plans, they showed the angle from the SIDE of the board, arching up to 90 degrees and beyond! It took a little head scratching to figure out that what they showed as 100, 110, 120 degrees would be shown on a blueprint as 10, 20 & 30 degrees off of 90! This is a great video for a lot of weekend warriors as well as up and coming tradesmen!

Very true. I am surprised not that many videos out there on this very topic. This is especially important for when cutting miter joints.

Good deal ! When I got my miter saw I was a diy and this brought one day in particular to mind. I wanted to case and access panel with trim and I was joining it to the baseboard. My trim angles I thought would be 45 degrees as anyone would and the bottom part of the trim where it met the baseboard with be a zero degree detent cut on the miter saw (90 degree). But then the top piece of trim which is parallel to the floor wasn’t sitting right on the two perpendicular pieces of trim and I swore it was because the miter saw was brand new and not calibrated after it was shipped to my house, I was triple checking my cuts with a machinist square on the trim angles and nothing was working. The problem was actually the 90degree cut where the trim met the baseboard. The floor was on a pitch. So when I met the trim to the top of the baseboard that was actually more like an 88 degree cut and not a true right angle. But it took forever for me to figure it out

I use an angle finder in my corners first then place it on my miter saw.

Very important for precision sawing it doesn't matter which machine.the best you can do buy always a Slide Compound Mitre Saw with the handle in a line above the saw blade, everything has to be in line Slide bar rails, handle, and saw blade. it's better no tilt saw blade, and engine with softstart . Handle vertical or horizontal above saw blade is okay if it is in line above the saw blade and in line with slide bar.Everything has to be in line this is important examples: bosch gcm 800 sj / gcm 8 slj professiona / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / EVOLUTION RAGE R255 sms / HITATCHI C12RSH2 / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX . The best you can do buy always a miller saw white handle centered in line above the saw blade (aluminum housing) winn winn. And no handle on the side of the saw blade aluminum housing there is always torsion in the aluminum housing. It is possible, if you want. you can test it yourself at home. first you make a cut +- 5mm deep in a piece of flat wood with the normal handle that is on the side of the saw. Then you do the same but now you press the saw low with your hand on the aluminum protective cover without the engine running. Now you can see whether the saw blade enters or next to the cut.

Thank you for this info. I am trying to figure out how to determine the angles to build the famous tier triangle pyramid planter. I would appreciate if you can help.

Thanks for this, eventually got my head round this, my saw is a 216mm, so I don’t have the depth of cut for skirting, so I would have to bevel cut (only single bevel saw). Are bevel angles worked out in a similar way, thanks.

I need to remember this next time I use my saw! I got the same saw

I missed the boat on what he is trying to say. What good are the markings if they are not accurate on the saw.

Welcome back. You've been gone a little while. :) Can I make a video suggestion? How to true a miter saw. I'm not dumb but I have a dws779 (12" sliding double bevel) and I cannot get this thing true at all. Would one of those magnetic digital angle finders help?

I have a Rigid Mitre Saw and it not zeroed in at all, I use my angle finder to get the proper mitre cut, but zeros not zero, and 45 ain’t 45. I feel like I just need to upgrade to the Dewalt
