I drive a lot in city traffic in my job and the boss gave us electrical vehicles. And they work incredibly well. Faster cooling, faster heating, easy to drive and we charge it nightly at the office so are always met by a fully charged car in the morning. It's such a major improvement over our earlier ICE vehicles.

Most city deliveries use the smaller vans nowadays because it's cheaper to hire 20 teenagers as freelancers than putting actual drivers on payroll. I don't know what it's like in the US outside of those delivery drivers, but here in Europe these vans are really only used for long range applications (like work vehicles travelling ~400km in a day) or if they have a double cab they're used for families taking holiday trips. Both situations you don't want to be sitting at a charger much..

@@blackgold754 Honestly, battery breaking down is such a rare thing these days, now that proper battery management software and systems have been dialed in. Manufacturers give 100,000 miles warranty on batteries so you can be sure they believe that they are going to last far longer than that. Yes you are going to get battery degradation but it is really not bad at all. I have lost 24 km of range after 5 years and 85,000 km of driving.

the diesel sprinter also comes in dually and even awd and it can tow up to 7000lbs! forget towing with the ev period. you actually have way more space in the diesel van since the bottom of the vehicle is almost empty.

There are plenty of at least semi-affordable EVs that are priced a bracket above their non-EV counterparts but don't necessarily reach the 'luxury' status (certainly don't feel like luxury in terms of used materials, quality, features etc.) - but those look like 'spaceships' for some weird reason instead of looking like regular cars. That's why I like BMW i4/i5 - they look almost exactly like their ICE counterparts (built on the same platform), they just happen to be electric... But they add a hefty premium on top of the ICE variant price (which itself is quite inflated) making it hard to justify going with the EV variant...

An ev van for last mile delivery (in cities) is one of the great use cases. Range doesn’t matter too much, price wise: it’s going to pay itself back fast especially cause start-stopping isn’t great for fuel economy nor is it great for wear on parts. And as mentioned less noise and “real” pollution is great to make cities more livable

Not just delivery but also for craftsmen. In Europe almost all craftsmen use vans. You can have full sorted toolbacks, workbenches etc. in the back, have all your tools protected from the environment and still transport a bunch of other stuff.

Disclaimer: I’m coming from the perspective of a current Amazon driver. I would hope if (really when) Amazon gets a hold of these they have some modifications. Not being able to walk between the cab and cargo area is a huge time suck. You may not think it is but you’ll lose time having to exit the cab when you need to grab an oversized package out the back. I’d also would’ve like to see the door slide into the side. It’s the main reason I prefer driving a CDV over a transit van at work. It’s just easier to get in and out of being 6’1”. Cup holders in the windshield have always seemed like a waste (it’s the same in the gas version). I do like that the range adjusts for the payload that’s pretty cool. Heated seats are nice when winter hits for deliveries. Truth be told I’ve always preferred our ford over any other brand to run my route in. The Mercedes vans are a bit taller than the other brands and they’re also a bit narrower. Makes it hard to pack in the morning and work in but on the back end when they’re empty they have a lot of sway in the wind. Just my two cents from someone who will probably end up working out of this van in the near future 🤣

Amazon bought a stake in Rivian and is already using electric vans from them which Marques has covered. They have a door between compartments, a garage-style slide-up door at the rear, and the passenger-side door slides back too.

I feel like they’re a little low for some of the areas we work (North East Georgia). I’ve just always thought when the transits went electric they’d make some small changes. Besides the ride height, which I’m really just being picky about, the Rivian is really the optimal way to deliver. I just would’ve liked to see sliding doors on the cabin and definitely a door between the cabin and cargo. I’d even settle for normal front door that at least opened automatically as we’re constantly getting in and out of the van with our hands full. Again, I’m really just coming at this from an Amazon drivers perspective. For just getting things from point a to point b this would be sweet.

I drive a 2022 Ford eTransit for work. It drives really well, gets 140 miles of range (which is more than enough for a full day of deliveries), and is comfortable. The battery has barely degraded in the 50+ thousand miles it has been driven as of yet. However, this Mercedes is most definitely better based on what I saw in the video. It has better HVAC controls, steering wheel controls, door controls, and a better infotainment system. Plus, this has heated seats while what I drive doesn't.

In Germany they are quite good for long travel, because below 3,5 tons they are like a car without speed limit. 160km/h / 100 mph was the fastest I drove, seemed sensible to don't drive faster. I never tested the max speed of the diesel. Hence the name "Sprinter" ;-)

Such vans exist all over Europe, often used by Metropolitan organisations (like Public Waterworks Dept. or whatever), forestry service staff, etc. The way you usually spot it by the lack of sound, or a similar EV badge on it.

We took a drive recently, Troy to Rochester, both NYS. 221 mi distance to go with our Chevy Bolt EV at 95%. We made it with 40+miles charge available. Return trip we had 4 miles less reserve. Now this was with summer tires and max speed of 58 m/h (no trouble with that). We would not expect to be able to do that with snow tires on.

These large vans are the functional equivalent of full size pickup trucks in Europe. You can get them in a cab-chassis variant and then have a bed as an upfit. Dropside bed, flatbed, car hauler bed whatever. Often you see dry freight upfits or even refridgerated boxes similar to what you get on semi-truck trailers for even more cargo space. They're also popular as ambulances and police vehicles. If I remember correctly diesel version of the sprinter can be ordered with a max GVWR of something like 6.5t so after upfitting you have somewhere around 3.5-4 tons of payload capacity Big difference is of course there isn't any option to accomodate people who want to use a work vehicle as a personal luxury daily car like you get with some of the better equipped pickup trucks stateside :)

The audio on the outside of the car seems bad due to the AI and the built in mics of pixel but when it was inside the car, that’s so crystal clear. Looking to more improvements especially the mic next year. Great quality video tho

Worked with Sprinters for the past three years. I believe it's the most used commercial vehicle in Europe, at least in the Netherlands it is. Limiting factor for these isn’t the range, in most European countries it would be above the weight limit for normal drivers licenses. Unfortunately commercially not viable

Marques, If you’re reading this: I don’t know where it would fit in your YT portfolio of channels but you should totally make a video on circularity of EVs since you mentioned in this video that you hope to see EV tech get to the level of having no trade offs. I always hear people saying EVs are polluting and all but I’ve seen some initiatives behind circularity of its tech so far. So I’d like to see your take on the whole thing.

We use Sprinters here in Australia for Ambulances, if these had a bit more range they could be fantastic for that purpose. Stock standard the range isn't bad, but with all the additional power the accessories in an ambulance draw, you'd be pushing it.

If you pull and hold the minus lever on the steering wheel you should get to D(auto) which is best wenn driving with navigation, then if regens if you come close to a roundabout or a corner/exit. At least it does that with Mercedes passenger cars (greetings from a Mercedes employee out of Germany). Love your content (tech and autofocus) Luis

As someone who has driven a fair amout of large commercial vehicles, this van not have the walk through to the rear would be a deal breaker for a lot of non large freight or cool storage delivery services. Especially in high heat states like AZ or NV. Im curious if that is just the model or something to do with the way they designed the EV/powertrain/structural integrity etc.

its just perfect for a job. You have what you need to have and what you use on job, no extras for distraction.. Even though you are driving this thing all day, you gotta remember, you will probably stop every 5-10 minutes, so to have a van without any features other than just drive go and stop is amazing, its just perfect

when we start to see too many videos a yt channel starts to become a corporation and I think marques has reached the point. also really good video qualty even on pixel looks really sharp and comparable to iphone's and the mic seems to be a problem as the start of the video was very low sound

That's actually a decent range. Last time I looked at electric cargo vans they got about 100 miles of range. And one other major benefit. It doesn't smell and create a bunch of emissions in the neighborhoods/cities. No idling and uselessly polluting while you get out to make a delivery and so on.

When I purchased my 2022 Mini Cooper EV it was cheaper than the equivalent ICE trim with rebates, and it looks identical on the outside, except for one badge on the rear of the car.

I used to drive an old Chevy or maybe it was a Ford cargo van for a microbrewery. I delivered beer for them. The main feature of that was that when you open the sliding door on the side, if you opened it all the way it entirely fell off. Come to think of it. Maybe that was a bug?

Marques I live very close to Vancouver (Canada) holding lot for autos. Basically it's miles and miles of unsold or yet to be delivered auto's. It is packed with EV's that nobody wants. I'm not talking like a few hundred, it's thousands! Clearly something is changing in the EV world. Either everyone who wanted one now has one, or people are clearly moving back to ICE.
