Today we explore railway mega projects under construction around the world, the insane engineering behind these transport systems and building designs behind each rail project. We cover Mexico's Tren Maya, Australia's Cross River Rail, China's High Speed Railways, Maglev Bullet Train, East Africa's Chinese-Built Railways and UAE's Etihad Railway.

6:01 pioneered in Japan? You mean in Germany. Germany had a functioning Maglev (TransRapid) in the 1990s. England also had a Maglev early on, but it was very slow. The German one was extremely fast

The Japanese "Maglev" is different from the German system implemented in Shanghai. It uses super-cooled, superconducting electromagnets instead of the "normal" magnets of the "slower" German system.

In the Kenyan railway segment, the narrator mispronounced the word "gauge". It rhymes with "cage". But he pronounced it like "gouge".

5:27 Yes, China has the largest network but China, as allways, is on another level, whithout them, Spain have the largest network (4000 Km) followed by Japan, France and Germany, even Marroco has a full high speed rail line!

Cool video! What was missing a bit for me were more details about environmental impact and measures taken by the architects to mitigate that, as well as the dept problems African countries are facing after taking massive loans from China for their rail projects - the video for me personally sounded a bit too much like "everything is awesome". Apart from that great video, keep it up!:)

Why is rail construction so expensive in Australia? When Amsterdam built its 9.7 km metro line 52, it went almost four times over budget at a whopping €3.1 billion - which is about half of what the line in Brisbane will cost. Even in Melbourne, it's a massive amount of money.

HS2 should have used the corridor of the Great Central Railway it would have been built quicker it would have caused less disruption and be more popular and have cost less.

What the video does not cover or choose to over look is the fact that China's HSR has massive debt and safty concerns, while Japan's HSR has one of the safest rail systems in the world. Also, the while the rail system development in Africa is impressive, here to the video does not mention that fact that most of the countries that built there rail systems with the help of loans from China are not DEEP in debt to China and may end up having to surrender ownership of the system to China.

HS2 deserves the top spot, for the pure insanity of paying 10 times book price, in one of the greatest rip-offs in the history of civil engineering.

I can't believe, well actually I can, but I'm watching a video about railway projects and the narrator does not know how to pronounce "gauge". Hint: the u is silent. If you can't get that right, one wonders what else did you not get right?

Mexico is forcibly moving indigenous population out of the ancestral lands and cutting a railway through the rainforest. Don’t think the fact that there waste from the train is biodegradable will make enough difference.
