I’d like to see Lopez bring his jerk up more in line with his snatch. 210 is a huge weight of course but a guy snatching 182 you’d think would be closer to 220. He’s stocky looks more like a jerker than Li Dayin or Nino.

This great battle between Li Dayin and Tian Tao should remind people just how difficult it is to become #1 in China in sport. There are 1.4 billion people in China, in all of Europe less than a billion, same with all of the Americas. China has a strong economy, a strong centralized government and determination to earn golds. So if you have ability in a sport especially one like weightlifting which has easily identified parameters of greatness someone is going to notice and you will receive the coaching and training you need to go as far as you’re able to if you’re willing to make the effort. If you become an elite athlete your life will get better with material things. The point I want to make is with the vast population it can seem easier to win the Europeans than the Chinese Nationals. These guys have stiffer competition than any other nation. Maybe the old Soviet Union was similar when you look at all the great athletes now from Russia,Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Belorussia and all the central Asian countries (all the “Stan’s”). China’s tough

They compete for one spot! Each Country can send in total 3 men and 3 women to the Olympics! And just 1 competitor pro weight class!

The Olympic rules for weightlifting are much more restrictive and limiting unfortunately. A lot of great lifters and crowd favourites won't get to perform, because of the limited spots.

Newbie to Olympic weightlifting but if China has a strong weightlifting team, how come they are competing for a spot in the last chance Olympic qualifier?

From what this olympic rules has. 2500 athletes from a country and 300 participants per sport. That would mean that if a Chinese weightlingting athlete is not dominating or is expecting a tight competition, they would hesitate to send that person. China is gold hungry, always been and will most likely only send the guaranteed gold getters.

There is an internal fight! They can send 1 weightlifter pro category and just 3 men in total! So they fight in their weight class but also in total! So for ex. China has a top 10 weightlifter in the class 73 kg. But that class is dominated by Indonesia. So maybe they wont send their lifter to the Olympics and will priorities other weight categories where they have a better Chance for gold!

In weightlifting one country can send only 3 men and 3 women, only one per category. China‘s best is in 61kg and 102 class, so there is competition between lifters in 73kg and 89kg class for the third men’s spot. Its a stupid rule tbh
