Newfoundland in most people’s eyes who live there aren’t Canadian. They are separate most of the history was under British rule since it was founded by British/Irish.
@airmedh Жыл бұрын
The south coast of Newfoundland is like this too. Newfoundland generally was isolated till about 100 years ago so the accent didn’t change much since the people arrived 300 years ago from southwest Ireland. I heard that Irish people came to Newfoundland some years ago scouting for people to work in their hospitality industry looking for people with an Irish accent. The cuisine, music in Newfoundland is all Irish or from 18th century southwest England.

New Foundland as a whole has a distinct connection with Ireland. New Foundland even has a distinct name in irish, Tir na hÉisc, which means land of the fish. Most/all other countries have bastardised vorsions of the english name or something like this ie. france = an fhrainc, ireland = Erie etc. Allegedly it is reference to the abundant source of fish, irish salmon I think, which originate in New Foundland!! St. Brendan Albatross must have follow the migrating salmon from Cobh to Tir na hÉisc!!

There’s a few videos here of Fogo. There was a video from the mid 80s filmed for RTE where people from the fishing village met their Irish counterparts, the accent was the same! Lots of the lads from Newfoundland were steel men on high rise buildings too, a few pints after work then back to work in the morning, 100s of feet in the air. With a hangover! These boys fall, get hurt, but always make it back to work!

Have you noticed. Irish "settle" but the British "invade"? And this is the case whether or not the Irish "invite" that "invasion". You will also notice that there is no explanation as to why a village in Newfoundland is more Irish than anywhere in Ireland? Is that because after centuries of keeping themselves pure despite that 800.year British "invasion" that Ireland today under Irish rule for 100 years is now so invaded its hardly Ireland at all? These are questions not addressed in this rather banal video.
